A type of arrow tip, usually of flint or stone, that has a sharp straight cutting edge at right angles to the axis of the arrow shaft, rather than a point. Such arrowheads are believed to have been used for shooting birds. See also

An ancient Greek garment of linen or wool worn next to the skin by women and men. In the Ionian style the chiton was made of fine linen and fastened on the shoulders and down the upper arms to form sleeves. It was held at the waist by a girdle whence it fell in close folds to the feet.

Chitty , Lily (‘Lal’) Frances
(1893–1979)
[Bi].

British antiquarian and amateur archaeologist best known for her work on prehistoric sites in the west of England and the Welsh Marches. Born in Lewdown, Devon, her family moved to Shropshire while she was still young and here she was educated at home. During WW1 she trained as a secretary. In the 1920s she met a number of well-established archaeologists and through them developed and pursued an interest in the subject, especially in recording and documenting finds from the area she grew to know so well in the central Welsh Marches. This was done in many ways: providing the Shropshire cards for the British Association Bronze Implement Catalogue was one, drawing the maps for Cyril Fox's
The personality of Britain
was another. She was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1939 and later was made an OBE.

A stone tool with a working edge formed by flakes removed from two directions. Mainly confined to Lower Palaeolithic industries, but also found in later periods. Chopping tools in the form of bifacial core tools with a sinuous, transverse edge caused by alternate flaking are characteristic of Asian Palaeolithic industries of the mid Pleistocene.

Hunter-gatherer culture within the Norton Tradition of coastal Alaska dating to the period 1000 and 500 bc. Characterized by fibre-tempered pottery decorated with linear stamping on the exterior surface, lanceolate stone projectile points, and oil lamps. Most of the communities of this stage seem to have been fairly isolated groups and there is much local variation. Use was made of marine and terrestrial resources.
