Excavation technique in which the surface of a deposit is carefully scraped with a trowel, knife, or sharp spade to reveal features and cuts represented by differences in texture, colour, or composition. The technique is especially useful in silty and sandy soils. See also

Differences in human physical stock regarded as the basis for categorizing large-scale human groups. Although a concern of much antiquarian investigation during the 19th century, it is not a major focus of modern archaeological research.

Type of side scraper distinctive of

assemblages. Such tools probably functioned as both a knife and a scraper.
racquet pin

Style of bronze pin shaped like a tennis racquet with a flat oval piece attached to a thin pointed shaft. Products of the early Bronze Age industrial traditions in the British Isles.

Type of Roman imperial coinage on which the emperor is depicted wearing a radiate or solar crown, typical of the 3rd century

radiate brooch
[Ar].
General term referring to bow-brooches with a semi-circular headplate decorated with a row of radiating knobs. Two major types are the radiate brooch with a straight-sided footplate (found in Frankish territories) and that with a lozenge-shaped footplate (found in Lombardic contexts).
