The vertical side wall of an excavation trench, or standing vertical face cutting through selected deposits or features within an excavation trench, to allow the study and recording of stratigraphic sequences. Such faces are frequently drawn (

) and photographed. Attempts have also been made to take casts or peels of standing sections for future reference.

Some section drawings aim to be faithful representations of what is visible in terms of differently textured deposits and stones without any interpretation as to the identified limits of defined deposits or contexts. Others aim to depict the recognized boundaries between contexts and provide generalized descriptions of the nature of the deposits themselves.

A residential pattern based around a single main settlement rather than involving moving camp at regular intervals.
Sedentary Phase
[CP].
The fourth of five main periods defined in the cultural sequence of southwestern parts of North America, broadly the period ad 100–1200. Succeeding the Colonial and preceding the Classical, the Sedentary Phase is characterized by the expansion of agricultural communities, building on advances in irrigation made during the Colonial Phase. There were important introductions from northwest Mexico, including ball-courts, platform mounds, painted and effigy ceramics, legged vessels, and shell ornaments. Religious concepts associated with crop fertility were also introduced. House plans became more rectangular with the long axis at right angles to the entrance which was typically situated half-way along one side. A distinctive red-on-buff pottery was developed, the decoration comprising geometric patterns or figure patterns reflecting hunting activities or other aspects of everyday life.
