Evan’s POV

Chapter 26

I was in a state of bliss when I heard those words coming out of Natalia’s mouth. I did hear what she said, but I had to ask her to repeat it just to make sure I heard her words correctly. “I am pregnant.”

I wasn't expecting it this early, but I was lost in love when I first met her that protection and condoms slipped out of my mind. I want this girl even more now and I want to have this family. I couldn't be more ready for this. I hope she feels the same way.

I have this sudden urge to want to take her home with me to protect the both of them. I also wanted to share the shocking but great news with my mother. I excuse myself from the room to call the office, but it is my mother that I want to call. So I did just that. She took the news incredibly well. She loved Natalia and her soon to be grandbaby. For the time being, though, I will keep this to myself.

We finally get our go ahead to leave and I take her as fast with me as I can go. She needs to be home and resting.

“I have decided to tell my parents the news after I graduate. I will tell them I have a boyfriend first, and then later I will tell them that I am pregnant.”

Natalia was rambling and rambling while pacing back and forth when I entered my bedroom. I sit on the bed and I watch her intently. She is quite a sight since we have left the hospital and I enjoy just admiring her.

She faces me and I say nothing. I just let her talk until finally she catches her breath. “Say something, Evan.”

“I was waiting for you to stop chatting so much,” I say jokingly.

She looks like she is about to have an anxiety attack. I get up on my feet quickly and walk to her, holding her arms. “You need to relax. It is going to be okay, I promise. I will be right by you every step of the way.”

My words seemed to be working when I see her body relaxing. Then she smiles. I hug her before throwing her on the bed, pinning her underneath me, helpless. You know what happened next!

***********************

I’m all ready and dressed to attend my future wife’s graduation. I’m standing in front of her door as we planned to meet her parents first, as they are already inside. She text me an hour ago, confirming that and mentioning that she has already told them about me and are excited to meet me.

The door opens and I am greeted by her dad. He seems a little nervous. Natalia jumps right in, introducing us. “Dad, this is Evan; Evan, this is my dad, Mark Day.”

“How are you doing, sir?” I hold out my hand to shake his hand and he returns it.

“Nice to meet you, Mr. Daniels. I’ve heard great things from my daughter about you.” I smile, of course, he has.

“I heard twice as many nice things about you and Mrs. Day.”

“Call me Mark, I insist.”

I nodded. “I will thank you.”

Hearing the sound of heels joining now is her mom. “Well, who do we have here?” She comes close to me and winks at her daughter. “Oh my, Natalia, you know how to catch them.”

“Evan, Mom; Mom, this is Evan.”

“Nice to meet you, Mrs. Day.”

“Oh, call me Lori.”

I tried to stop the blush coming up on my face. She gives hugs and kisses me for several seconds, feeling like minutes. I thought she wasn't going to stop. “You two stay here while we finish up here.”

They both finish up while Mr. Day and I are left alone. “I hear that you both have been seeing each other for a while now? So what’s a while?”

“A couple of months or so,” I say confidently.

He nods. “I understand you are an investigator?”

“Yes, I am.”

“Impressive.”

“Thank you. I’ve been in the field for a long time.”

I see his demeanor change and he looks to be feeling a little more comfortable. I am assuming he knows I’m not a young guy who wants his daughter for a quick fix. So I am taking more rope and saying what I feel. “I love your daughter, Mr. Day. I know it seems really early in our relationship for me to be saying this, but we are in this for a long time. I am glad I met you and your wife.”

He shakes my hand again, this time being more of an approval. “That was good enough for me.”

I hear heels clicking again and I look over to see Natalia walking out in her cap and gown looking beautiful as always. I smile at her with pride taking over me. She returns the smile. She hands her camera to me so I can take photos before we leave.

“Okay, we are ready to go and Alyssa just text me right now. She’s waiting for us.”

We all leave together in one car. We arrive at the venue a couple minutes early. We all engage in conversation before it was time for Natalia and Alyssa to enter the building for the graduation ceremony.

I look around at everyone. They are all happy, clapping, and interacting with one another. Alex is whistling and clapping for his girl. Natalia’s parents are glowing with pride for their daughter’s accomplishments.

I hope they feel the same way when they know the truth about their soon to be here grandbaby. I look up to find Natalia and she is searching for me through the crowd when our eyes meet. The best feeling in the world is seeing her turn her tassel and throwing her cap it in the air after the ceremony ended. I saw her beautiful face full of happiness and triumph. I just want this night to be over just so I can have her all to myself over and over.

Although Mr. Day insisted for me to join them for dinner, I decide to decline the offer.

“Why are you not joining us?” Natalia asks with a sad look while I hold her in my arms.

“I want you guys to be together in this moment. Once you’re done with your parents, call me and I will come and get you anywhere you are at. How’s that?” I ask, holding her tighter as we both stare at each other.

She nods and smiles.

“Go and spend time with your family and Alyssa; besides, I have a lot of work to do,” I say. “Have fun; we will have our fun later.” I wink.

Blush creeps up her neck to her face, and then I hold my pointer finger on her lips as I make the “Shhh” sound. Smiling, she nodded her head.

I wanted to get her a surprise gift, so I can give it to her tonight when I see her. I want it to be special and I know exactly what will it be. As I walk to my car, my phone rings. It’s Marissa. “What do you want now?”

I hear her breathing on the other end, “Nice way to answer your phone.”

I laugh. “I’m joking, but what do you want now?”

“Well, I am calling since you have been out of the office lately to update you on work.”

I enter my car and start driving. “I’ve been busy, but I am listening.”

“Well, Evan.” She starts rambling on about some minor cases we are assigned to together. I’m listening but not listening, my mind and attention is on Natalia as I’m driving. Work is the furthest thing from my mind today. I will just say yea every so often so she can believe I am listening to her.

“Oh and our last case of Frederic, well he pled guilty after all this time. He was charged for drug possession, drug trafficking, running an organization involving the drugs and prostitution. I’m pretty sure he is not getting off easy on this one. Last but not least…” She clears her throat.

“SHIT!” I yell.

“What's wrong, Evan?”

“I almost didn't make the red light.”

“Stop driving like a maniac. Well, we need to get on with Alyssa’s mother and bring her in to charge her with conspiracy since she lives here in NYC and it is in our jurisdiction,” she continues.

I didn't hear her last words she was saying, all I heard were car horns blowing. I was rushing home and I was trying to hear her on the phone then that’s when I felt a big hit coming from the right on my passenger’s side, the headlights blinding me, and a rush of a sudden fear. I whipped my neck to view where the hit and noise was coming from and I noticed my car was being dragged down the street. I hear another hit.

I didn’t have time to look, but I instantly felt this excruciating pain on my head as it is slammed against the window, and I feel blood running down my face. I am dizzy instantly. I’m trying to keep from passing out when I hear people yelling, “There's a man in that car.”

I hear an ambulance getting closer and I try to move only to realize I cannot move my body. I can taste blood in my mouth. I can hear people trying to open my car to let me out, but not being able to open the door. I can't help it and I am getting frustrated.

I hope this is not the end of me. Not now. I found my lost piece of the puzzle and this cannot be the ending. This cannot be my death. My Natalia and my baby that is all I can think about right now. This can't be my last chapter in my life. I need to survive this. My mind is turning black and my eyelids are closing on their own. I am trying to fight it and keep my eyes open, but it is getting difficult to do so.

That is when I heard glass shattering. Someone broke my window. I cannot see whom. I feel arms grabbing me from inside the car pulling me out. I see people, cops, and firefighters looking in, blurry, but I see them. My last thoughts were of Natalia and my unborn child. I stopped fighting my eyelids to stay open. I let my conscious go. I felt my lungs fight for the last gulp of air and now I see black.
