Chapter 1

Keep the change,” I said with a smile as I handed the burly
cab driver a twenty before stepping out into the cool night
air.

Thanks,” I heard the deep voice of the man call back before I
shut the door and walked up to the large double door entrance that
lead into Booker’s Music Hall, the most popular indie rock club in
Riverside.

The bouncer, a tall broad shouldered man
dressed in black, didn’t even so much as glance in my direction as
I walked past, too distracted by a petite little blond, scantily
clad in a plunging pink neck dress that left little to imagination.
The smell of sweat, smoke, and liquor greeted me as I entered the
club, filled to max capacity with gorgeous men and women that made
me feel completely out of place. Few eyes glanced in my direction
as I forced my way towards the bar, but those that did seemed
almost to narrow as if to tell me that I didn’t belong.

I knew it was irrational, but whenever I was
in such a crowded environment I always felt that every laugh, every
whisper, and every joke was made at my expense. Keeping my head
down as much as possible, I finally made it to the bar, and to my
relief just as a couple locked at the waist shifted away to find a
place closer to the stage.

Quickly I slipped into one
of the two open barstools, which creaked under my weak. My heart
skipped a bit as I glanced down. ‘
What if
it broke?’

What will you be having?” came a disgruntled voice that
distracted me from my momentary fears. I looked up to see the
bartender with a shaved head that glistened in the low light
staring down at me with a face painted in annoyance. While I worked
in customer service, I could never imagine having to tend to so
many people at the same time, so I took no offense to his
unwelcoming tone.

A
pint of Booker’s Honey Ale,” I replied with a polite smile.
Booker’s Music wasn’t just renown for it’s house shows, but also
it’s own line of brews that weren’t available outside of the club.
Personally I wasn’t very fond of drinking beer, but I also wasn’t
fond of going out to crowded clubs so I figured I might as well
just try and do my best to fit in.

It took the bartender only a minute before
he returned with my beer, and only another minute to take my twenty
and return with my change.

Thanks,” I said as I pushed a five towards him. Due to the
promotion the club was running the beer only cost me four, so I
figured that the generous tip would have at least earned a smile of
thanks, but as he scooped up the bill his lips didn’t even so much
as twitch before he turned away to tend to the rest of the
bar.

He is just having a rough night,’
I
reassured myself before I took a sip of ale, tasting the slight
hint of honey that did little to mask the bitterness. My eyes
watched the bartender as he worked, and my thoughts proved to be
wrong as a petite girl at the end of the bar got him grinning.

If you had a body like that, you would
have gotten yourself a smile as well.’

The thought caused my eyes to drift downward
to look myself over. My traditional business attire covered a body
that was plump at all the right places, but also a little more than
plump at all the wrong places too. It irritated me to no end how
others can be so outrageously judgmental, assuming quickly that my
weight must be the product of some sort of extreme laziness that
they might catch if they got too close.

Their assumptions couldn’t have been further
from the truth as over the last year since graduating from college
I had enrolled in multiple diet and exercise programs, but
unfortunately none of them had produced the results I had desired.
Every time I would start to drop a few pounds, I always found
myself feeling less than thrilled about life, so I gave up. While I
wouldn’t mind to have an approving gaze thrown my way every now and
then, my personal happiness far outweighed any care for societies
approval.

Hello Riverside!” came the deep voice of the only man I had
every truly loved, pulling my eyes from my body to the far stage to
see my best friend, Blake Hunter. He stood upon the stage wearing
his gorgeous smile as his captivating blue eyes looked out over the
sea of people that cheered back at him. Slung over his shoulder was
his jet black electric guitar, and even from a distance I found my
eyes studying the way the strap caused his red shirt to bunch and
cling to his muscled body. “It feels good to finally be home! I
hope you’re all ready to make some noise!”

The crowd roared back its approval, and
Blake spun around to shout something inaudible to his bandmates. My
eyes wandered down across his perfectly shaped back to the outline
of his tight ass, hidden beneath a pair of fashionably torn
jeans.

Let’s hit it!” he yelled as he spun back to the microphone and
set into the song. Blake was a professional entertainer, and knew
how to get the crowd going as he strung his guitar with exaggerated
movements while singing the lyrics to his bands new hit single with
a flawlessly deep melody.

Blake had just returned
from a six month tour with his band, but everyone in attendance
knew his music by heart as he was a local hero that was quickly
rising up to national stardom. The crowd sung along with the
chorus, and more than a few women tossed their undergarments out
onto the stage, earning a laughing smile from Blake, and a scowl
from me. ‘
How might he act if I were to
throw my underwear onto the stage with a waistband thicker than his
own?’

I pushed away the thought, and just focused
on the music, letting his words resonate to my very core. I took
another drink of my beer, and found that his music truly did have a
way of making everything in life better.

When the song came to an end, the crowd
erupted into loud cheers, screaming for an encore, but Blake only
laughed and shook his head. “Don’t worry I’ll be in town for quite
some time. You’ll get to hear a lot more of me on nights when I
don’t have to steal the limelight from the great talent we have
here tonight.”

The crowd cheered again, and Blake slipped
his guitar off his shoulder before heading into the back as a new
band took the stage to give its best attempt at keeping the crowd
entertained following such a flawless performance. I, like many
others, just couldn’t get into the new band, so I turned back
towards my beer, surprised to see that the glass was nearly empty.
I considered finishing the last of it, but without Blake’s music
that task seemed too much of a battle, so I opted to push the glass
away and stand up.

You aren’t leaving are you?”

I turned and gasped in surprise as I saw
Blake’s perfect blues staring back at me. “What?…” I stumbled for
words. Although I considered him my best friend, I hadn't expected
to actually speak with him tonight, believing that the sea of
people would have shielded me from his sharp eyes. “Um… no I was
just stretching.” I stretched out my arms in an attempt to sell my
needless lie.

Good, because I’ve missed you,” he said with a flash of his
brilliant smile before he stepped forward and pulled me into his
strong arms. I inhaled the spiced scent of his cologne and became
distinctly aware of the way the swells of my breasts pressed up
against his rock hard chest, making me wonder what it might feel
like were our clothes not in the way. “Can I buy you a drink?”
Blake asked after he released me and took the still empty stool to
my right.

You know I could never say no to you,” I replied before I
repositioned myself on the stool, realizing as his thigh pressed up
against mine why it had remained empty. The heat of his body
pressing up against me caused me to flush, but he seemed not to
notice as he waved over the bartender.

Great show man,” the now smiling bartender said as he walked
up and bumped fists with Blake. While Blake was a local celebrity,
it still annoyed me a little that the bartender didn’t even so much
as glance in my direction.

Thanks,” Blake replied. “Let me get two cape cods.”

Coming right up,” the bartender said before he moved down the
bar to make our drinks.

Blake turned to me and gave a nod towards
the discarded glass. “I thought you didn’t drink beer.”

I gave a shrug of my shoulders. “With
everyone raving about it, I thought I might give it a try.”

Blake laughed, “Just like me, people only
think highly of it around her because it’s a Riverside
original.”

Yeah, but unlike you the beer deserves at least half the
credit it’s given,” I replied teasingly.

Blake laughed louder, but before he could
retort to my jest the bartender returned with our drinks. “Here you
are.”

Thanks,” Blake replied as he took the drinks and handed the
bartender what looked like a twenty. “The rest is for
you.”

Thanks man,” the bartender said before heading away to tend to
a newly arrived couple at the far end of the bar.

What should we toast to?” Blake asked as he raised his drink
before me.

To
being home,” I replied as I lifted my glass up to meet his with a
soft clink.

To
being home,” he echoed before we both took a long drink.

So
what’s new?” Blake asked as his blue eyes stared deep into mine,
causing me to flush all the more and advert my gaze down to his
drink.

Uh,” I said as I found my eyes studying the way his long
fingers curled around the glass. “Honestly not much. Life has been
just as boring as ever.”

Yeah, nothing exciting seems to really ever happen in
Riverside.”

Isn’t that the truth,” I said before taking another sip of my
drink, letting the cranberry and vodka wash away my memories of the
overly bitter beer. “So how was the tour?”

Really good,” he said with a smile. “We got a lot of positive
feedback on some of our new stuff. Hopefully while we’re home we
can put the finishing touches on our debut album, and we’ll see
where we go from there.”

Don’t forget about us little people down here in Riverside
when you make it big.”

You know I could never forget about you, Rose.”

Funny considering you never chose to call me once while you
were out on the road,” I replied in a tone that did little to hide
my irritation.

Don’t give me that,” he said with a shake of his head. “The
phone works both ways, and you know why I might be hesitant to call
the roommate of my ex-girlfriend.”

Yeah I understand,” I said before I took a sip of my drink,
swallowing my anger. While his point was sound, it also annoyed me
that he failed to give any consideration to the fact that our
friendship long exceeded the relationship he had with my
roommate.

How’s Hailey?” Blake asked, his voice lowering to just a
whisper. My gaze lifted to see his eyes had also fallen to his
drink. I knew he was still hurting after the two had called things
off a few months before he had went out on tour. They had been in a
relationship for nearly three years, in-fact he was the one that
had introduced me to Hailey when I was looking for a roommate
following my graduation.

She’s good I guess,” I said with a shrug. “You know her,
always staying busy with work.”

Hailey had done a good job of giving the
appearance of a borderline workaholic, but a month after Blake had
gone on tour my curious snooping had revealed the truth of it. Most
of the late nights Hailey was supposedly spending at work were
instead being spent at high end restaurants and hotels with her
married boss. While others might have been disgusted with her
actions, I found myself happy because I knew that if she was seeing
another man I wouldn’t have to worry about her getting back
together with Blake. My inner joy made me feel more than a little
guilty.
