Who are you…do I know you?

She asked in a slurred voice.

I’m Adam a friend of Rone and you?

I’m Summer.

Nice name.

Haze.

Sorry…what’s haze?

Summer Haze
,
that’s my name.

You’re kidding me right?

My screwed up mom
thought it was cool
because
she told me
I was born in
a summer haze. Dumb bitch, I hate her and
I hate this shitty
fucked up
world too
,
and you?

Me what,

He replied.

I don’t get what you’re saying.

Hate the world too stranger boy?

Yep with vengeance I want out.

That makes two of us then.

She replied grabbing a can of coke as she
fell
b
ack down on the old sofa
staring at
Adam
,
her eyes seducing him.

He
couldn’t quite
make her out,
granted
she
was
seriously hot
and
totally different from the clean cut
high school girls that he’d
always mixed wit
h. This was
a ro
ugh edged city girl who h
e thought
more his style than the boring narrow minded
Katie
types whose only d
esire was to snag the guy
sing wedding bells and settle in suburbia.

Not quite sure whether to sit down on the floor and make h
imself at home or to stand on the spot
and wait to
be introduced Adam’s quandary was over when Rone sat on a chair and threw
him an oversized cushion.

The two gu
ys
slumped on the couch
were
st
oned, o
ne of them almost asleep while
the other stared
out into space. Summer
didn’t
stop biting away at her non-existent nails eyeing Adam and
giggling
occasionally while Rone chattered non-stop
about nothing special.
He couldn’t take his eyes of the
cool dark-minded chick
that he was
desperate to get to know-
in more ways than one.

Did Joe say he was bringing food guys?

Rone asked.

Hope so,

Summer replied.

Because
I am
really
hungry and there’s nothing here.

Adam was itching to talk to her but he was
lost for words, wan
ting to say the coolest thing was
uppermo
st in his thoughts
but
he was stumped and remained
silent
. The only thing he could
think
to do
was to
throw
the
occasional ‘I’m hot for you’ glances in her direction.

Home was a million miles away, the neatly mowed lawns and
well-kept
houses
was
another world to the chaos of the
city with all
its dysfunctional inhabitants. For the first time
in years he was
gratefu
l to
someone. It was Rone who he hardly knew and
without him he’d
probably
still be wandering the dark unknown streets with no place to go.

The familiar voice
s of his dad
had
stopped and
attempting
to analyse the reason he came
up with
a logical
answer. That since he made the right decision
to leave
home
his dad was happy
although everything was still messed up
he
felt
that Summer
was a kindred spirit. Someone who’d had
been through
enough bullshit to know how he felt and what he’d been through.
Katie
lived in a nice home with warm loving parents who doted on her. She didn’t know the meaning of real misery, but he knew for sure
that
Summer Haze did.

Dude, you got any money?

She
asked him.

I have a name it’s Adam.

Adam what…apple?

She replied.

“I’m
broke. I
lost my cash and phone a while back.

He said ignoring her jibe.

Shit man not even
one fucking
dime
?

“Maybe
I
can get some, you know nothing’s
impossible.

Yeh
how?

Steal it or something I don’t know yet, I’ll figure it out.

He replied.

I
wanna
have some coke, this weed is so damn weak it doesn’t get me off terra
firm
e
.

He wanted to show off
his male bravado
to impress her and o
ne way to ge
t what he wanted was to provide. If she needed something and he got it then she’d been in his debt and feel duty bound to return the favour.

I am so fu
cking hungry!

She said leaning close to Adam.

He
stood up and beckoned
Rone to follow
,
knowing
subconsciously
who was
the stronger of the two he didn’
t argue sensing that Adam wouldn’t be too happy if he refused.

We’re going
out
to get food,
you wait here and we’ll be
back soon.

He
told her.

Summer smiled and blew him a kiss
. I
t was a sign.

With a reluctant Rone in tow they wander
ed the streets close by
working
out
how
to
get food
for free. Stealing money was a step too far for Adam, the only way to do that was to mug someone and he didn’t think he could
ever
stretch that far.

W
e can try the bins.

Rone suggested.

That’s a plan,
I bet
restaurants throw
stuff out
and
maybe a convenience store,
they throw out too don’t they?

Adam
was
cloaked by the anonymous world of the city. N
o-one knew who he was or cared and no-one looked
at him either
,
unli
ke the suburbs where everyone was nosy and got
in your business.

With a
bit of detective work it didn’t
take long to find trash
bins behind restaurants and a
late night grocery store.

Hey look pizza sl
ices and they’re wrapped
!

Rone said with excitement.

Without have to resort to steal
ing
, the bin behind a restaurant yielded
as much as they could
carry
.
Proudly
they return
ed with p
izza,
bread, some slightly stal
e muffins
and
a couple of uneaten fried chicken wings
.

Wow…thanks guys!

Summer said as she jumped
up in delight her stoned eyes coming alive.

Finally the other two stir
red
at the sight of f
ood being laid out on the floor and everyone sat
together as if they are having a picnic
grabbing what they could. Adam was
s
tarving
but happy that he’d
shown his supremacy and abilities to deliver
. T
hankfully there was
more than
enough to go round and when it was
finished they share
d out the muffins
, dessert.
