Jamie wished she could stay like this forever, wrapped in his arms safe and whole, but she knew that it wasn’t possible, which made the climax when it hit her a few moments later bittersweet. Death was holding onto her as he continued to move inside her in those slow even strokes. His head lifted and his lips skimmed over her shoulder leaving gentle kisses in his wake. She gripped his shoulders moaning because her body was already heating up again from the slow easy ride he was giving her.

He looked down at her and his eyes met and held hers as he moved in her. She could feel the world narrowing to include only this moment where he made love to her. Death placed a hand on her cheek tilting her head and his mouth slowly lowered to take hers. She felt his warm breath sigh across her lips as they gently caressed her before he deepened the kiss by thrusting his tongue past her lips. She moaned as his body mirrored the harder more aggressive strokes of his tongue into her mouth and she felt herself arch into him.

Her second climax hit her hard, almost ripping her from reality because she felt as if he’d somehow connected to a part of her that she’d never known existed. He threw his head back and the roar he released as he came rang out loudly in the room. As he slowly came to a stop before collapsing next to her on the bed, she felt her heart ache, almost ripping in two because it was over and he’d likely gotten what he came here for.

Chapter Eighteen

Death rose from the bed looking back at Jamie lying there beneath the covers. He wanted to stay here with her and never let go but she would be in danger and he just couldn’t allow that.
Fuck, he hated leaving her.
Anger surged through him making his body stiff and his mood sour. He pulled on his jeans and grabbed his cut off the nightstand to put it on. He needed to go talk to Blade about the raid they were working on but when he’d arrived a few hours ago, he’d only wanted to see Jamie. Now that he had though he didn’t want to leave her again. It was taking everything inside him not to wake her up and tell her to fucking pack her shit because he was taking her with him.

Not that it would work. He grinned thinking of her reaction to an order like that. He would likely have to beg her to get her to leave with him after that but it was a tempting thought nonetheless. Death watched her shift on the bed and rub her face into the pillow and he waited, holding his breath a little because if she woke up he wasn’t sure he wouldn’t tell her that she owned him body and soul. She rolled onto her back with her arms flung out and she let out a little huffy sigh before settling. He grinned staring at her breasts, his mouth watering.

Fuck, she was beautiful.

His body urged him to lay back down and start making love to her all over again but he knew if he did he’d never leave her. Death turned away, his cock throbbing as his hand reached for the door, but he couldn’t resist looking back for one more glance at her. His breath catching at the sight of her and he had to force himself to move out of the room, his steps heavy as he headed towards Blade’s office.

“You talked to my sister I assume,” Blade said when Death entered his office unannounced to find him leaning back in his chair smoking a cigar. Death didn’t answer that because he knew that Blade was implying he’d slept with her and he had, but that was not any of the other man’s business, despite him being her brother.

“Not discussing that with you so drop it. Let’s figure out what we’re going to do about the raid we need to iron out so I can get back to my club.” Death saw Blade’s face turn dark, likely because he’d basically told him to mind his own business. Lake sat up on the couch where he’d been laying to glare at him.

“I see. You’re headed back to your club today then and when can I expect you to return here?” Blade asked.

“Not sure if I will need to come back here, at least not until we get this settled.” Death didn’t tell Blade he was coming back in a week for Jamie because it wasn’t something he felt the need to discuss with him. When it happened and she agreed to come home with him, he would worry about it then.

Lake stood up, his hands balled and his body language aggressive as he took a step toward Death before Blade grabbed his shoulder stopping him. Death didn’t know what the fuck was wrong with him but Lake had better not be trying to get with his woman or he would fucking murder the little fucker. Club truce or no truce, nobody was taking Jamie from him. Death eyed the other man darkly almost unable to contain the need to lay claim on the woman who owned his heart but these men weren’t his brothers and he wouldn’t show his hand so easily to them.

“Sit down, boy. I don’t have time to smack you down properly right now. Let’s get this shit figured out so I can get back to my club,” Death growled.

He wasn’t in the mood to deal with any bullshit over Jamie. She belonged to him and this posturing bullshit wasn’t in his wheelhouse. Death turned back to Blade looking at his dark scowl and the way he held Lake’s shoulder when he would have moved toward him again.

“Stop, Lake, we need this truce. Fuck, did I really just fucking say that?” Blade asked, his face contorting into a dark frown. Death had a feeling suddenly he was missing something but he ignored it.

“I don’t fucking like it but I get it. Still feel like it’s a betrayal but let’s get this shit over with and get rid of the son-of-a-bitch for good,” Lake muttered before plopping back on the couch, his arms crossed and a dark glower focused on Death.

He didn’t care if the dickhead liked him but he had news for the little fucker, he wasn’t getting him out of Jamie’s bed or her life without killing him. Lake’s words made him pause because something was off there but he didn’t know what and at the moment he wasn’t in the mood to figure it out because he was trying his damnedest not to walk out of this room to go get Jamie and carry her home where she belonged.

Jamie stood outside the clubhouse beside Crook, four days after Death had shown up in the wee hours of the morning to make love to her before leaving without even a goodbye. She decided the next morning she would wait to tell him. It was obvious that she didn’t mean anything to him and she wouldn’t allow her heart to be broken again. Having been raised by men all her life she knew that when they wanted something, they never took no for an answer and they sure as hell didn’t leave the woman they wanted behind without a goodbye.

Jamie sighed and asked again Crook if they were ready to leave yet.

“No, wait till Evert gives the go-ahead.” Crook’s voice was gentle and his look sympathetic. It was starting to annoy her the way they all looked at her this past week since finding out she was pregnant and Death wasn’t interested anymore.

She wanted to get this trip on the road because waiting here for no good reason was annoying. It had taken an hour-long argument to get Evert to allow her to even go to the doctor over in Bracken. She likely wouldn’t have convinced him if it hadn’t been for Doc Nichols telling him that multiple births could be complicated even with all the advancements they currently had and it was best if she went to someone familiar with the issues that could arise from her pregnancy.

He’d agreed to let her go over this morning but he wanted Crook to follow her, which was why she was standing here with Crook waiting for him to get the go-ahead from Evert. She didn’t understand why they were being so overprotective all of the sudden. They’d always been a little ridiculous about it but never as bad as they were currently. She knew that the split from the other darker part of the club was going to start an internal war but they weren’t likely to come after her. How would they even know that she’d gone to Bracken anyway? It was ridiculous that she was standing here waiting in the hot sun when she felt like she was going to vomit at any moment.

That was one thing she hated about being pregnant, the constant nausea. Otherwise she was happy about the babies. Scared to death of course but happy nonetheless. Not that she wouldn’t have an entire club to help her, because she would, but it wasn’t easy thinking of two little souls who would be completely dependent on her for their wellbeing.

“Well can you call him again? I’m hot,” Jamie muttered, knowing she was acting like a whiney brat but she was tired of dealing with the over-protective attitude and the pitying looks.

“I already called him a minute ago and he said five minutes. We have to wait till he says the road’s clear,” Crook said, looking a little annoyed himself, likely because she’d asked him to leave eight times at this point.

“This is stupid, Crook. It’s not like they are lying in wait for us to leave so they can kill us all. This war hasn’t heated up that much yet, for goodness sakes, you guys only started it a few days ago. Let’s just go because it’s hot out here.” Jamie rolled her eyes and wiped the sweat off her brow. She just wanted to get on the road because it was an hour-long drive there and she was already cranky.

“I told you to go wait inside and I would come get you when it’s time to leave. You’re the one who chose to wait out here with me,” Crook grumbled, sending a little glare her way.

Jamie didn’t care that she was annoying him. At the moment she just wanted to get the show on the road. She was tired of waiting on them to decide it was safe. Crook’s phone rang and she watched him answer it, feeling relief flood her that she would finally be able to start this long-assed drive. Crook talked to Evert for about three minutes, then motioned for her to get into the truck. Jamie climbed into the cab on the passenger side and Crook got in beside her.

“See, I told you it wouldn’t be long,” Crook said as he started the engine. Jamie decided not to comment that he’d told her that thirty minutes ago because she wasn’t going to be a bitch about it. Looking out the window at the puffy white clouds, she wondered what the doctor would say about the babies.

About three hours later, Jamie was glad that they were headed back to the clubhouse because she was exhausted. The doctor had let her listen to the babies’ heartbeats and the fast little swishing sound of their tiny hearts pumping had reassured her that they were safe and real. Up until she’d heard it, they’d been an idea but she hadn’t felt like they were a reality like she did now. Her hand smoothed over her flat stomach wondering if she would ever get used to the idea.

They’d been on the road for about forty minutes when Crook started cussing. “Fuck, fuck, fuck. What the hell.”

Jamie shook herself from her daydreaming and looked over at him in question. He wasn’t looking at her but instead was watching the rearview mirror and the truck suddenly lurched forward as Crook sped up. Jamie glanced out the back window, her heart jumping when she saw eight bikes roaring up behind them. She gripped the handle on the doorframe and her body tensed because it wasn’t likely to be her brother’s men if Crook was this upset about them.

“Hold on and call Blade now, Jamie. Tell him we’re about ten miles out and he needs to get here now,” Crook said, accelerating even more on the bumpy road they were currently flying down. Jamie didn’t question his orders and grabbed her phone to call Evert. He answered on the second ring.

“Hey, Jam-jam. How was the doctor?” Evert asked sounding relaxed.

“We’re in trouble,” Jamie cried into the phone, her panic making her voice shaky.

“Where?” Evert asked, his voice hard and all relaxation gone from it.

“About ten miles out and there are like eight bikes roaring up behind us. Crook is trying to outrun them but I don’t know if we can,” Jamie said, looking at the gap between them and the bikes closing with panic roaring inside her.

“We’re on our way,” Evert said and hung up without another word, likely already at his bike. Jamie knew he was coming for her but she wasn’t sure they’d make it in time because those bikes were already on top of them.

“Damn, I can’t go any faster or we’ll flip going around the corners. Fuck, I should have gone the longer way and not this damned windy fucking road,” Crook growled, his hands tight where they gripped the steering wheel.

“They’re gaining on us, Crook, you have to go faster,” Jamie cried, her mind on what could happen if they caught up to them.

“I can’t. I don’t want to lose control of the damned truck. Fuck,” he growled, looking in the mirror again. “Get the gun out of the glove box. If they force us to stop you are likely to need it. We might have to hold them off by shooting them from inside the truck.”

Jamie didn’t want to think about what would happen then because she was sure it wouldn’t be good, whatever it was. She did as she was told, grabbing the gun and holding it tightly in her hand, trying not to freak out even more than she already was because it wouldn’t be good for the babies.

“You remember how to use it, Jamie?” Crook demanded.

“Yeah, but you have your gun too, right?” Jamie asked.

“Yeah, but they’re likely to kill me quickly. It’s you who may have to hold them off till your brother gets here.” Jamie didn’t like that statement because she loved Crook like a brother and the thought of him dying broke her heart into shards. No, that wasn’t going to happen; she wouldn’t accept that, she just wouldn’t.
