“I hope that’s true.” I shifted so that Patrick could put both of his arms around me. The safety that I felt when I was with him chased away the last of the darkness. I could hear the steady beat of his heart in his chest and I’d believed that what he said was true. I slid my arms around his waist. It was time. “Patrick, sweetie, the next time something like that happens…the parole board calling or whatever…make sure you tell me.”

“Okay.” He pressed his lips against the top of my head.

“It’s just, I have to be careful not to get too stressed.”

He stiffened at my words and I tilted my head back to look up at him.

“Why?” The word held cautious optimism.

“Because it wouldn’t be good for the baby.”

Patrick’s entire face lit up. “Another one…” He didn’t bother to finish the sentence. With his eyes blazing, his mouth was on mine. The kiss started sweet, his lips parting mine as his tongue slid into my mouth, then became more demanding as I pressed my body against his. The fingers on my back flexed and I knew he was wishing we weren’t standing in the middle of a roomful of people.

He pulled his mouth away and rested his forehead against mine. “Let’s see if Ryan and Liam can keep Victoria overnight. It’d be good practice for them.” He cupped the side of my face, his thumb resting on my cheek and his fingers curling around my neck. “We’ll want some alone time before our son makes his appearance.”

I chuckled, my stomach tightening at the thought of a whole night alone with my husband. Those didn’t come very often. “How do you know it’s a boy?”

He shrugged. “I just do.” He kissed my forehead. “But I won’t be disappointed if it’s another girl.”

This time, I tugged him down for a kiss. He made a sound in the back of his throat as I pushed my tongue past his lips, claiming his mouth with a heat that I could feel licking across our skin. When his teeth scraped my bottom lip, I swallowed a moan and pulled back.

“Maybe we should see if they’ll just take her now.” Patrick sounded more than a little breathless.

I smiled and said, “Good idea.”
