And Darrek, who has only ever wanted to please, to make someone proud of him, is rewarded every day by something as simple and true as the smile on his lover’s face. Building their life together, anything seems possible.

He still worries about Kyle sometimes, and the twisted nature of his life with Ben, but makes himself available whenever his friend needs him.

Inspired by Gabriel’s bravery, Darrek continues to keep in touch with his own family. He realizes his interactions with them will never be ideal or the fairy-tale version of what family is supposed to be, but really? Family is never like that. And that’s okay.

For a while, Gabriel and Darrek’s sex life is nothing but normal, simple, uncomplicated and almost routine lovemaking. The toys and gear get stored away. The hooks get removed from the walls. The furniture gets locked up out of sight and out of mind in the unused, spare bedroom. And for a while that’s more than enough for both of them.

Until one day, Gabriel gets home and comes through the front door to see Darrek waiting for him on his knees, hands behind his back, head bowed submissively. All he wears is the gleaming necklace bearing the lock inscribed with a G.

Gabriel drops his things, pulls off his jacket and his shirt. He walks up to the kneeling man and cups a hand under his chin, tilting his head back sharply, exposing the long, thick column of his neck and watching his Adam’s apple bob as he swallows.

“What’s your safeword?” he asks in a gravelly purr.

“Tundra. It’s Tundra, Master. Thank you.”

“So obedient. I think we should find out just
how
obedient you really are....”

“Yes, sir. Thank you, sir.”

Gabriel smiles, and Darrek submits, again and again and again.

Author’s Notes

I began writing this book expecting that no one would ever see it. The idea sparked in my brain and it was born only because it was created without rules and boundaries, free of hindrances that may come when putting words to paper when you think you have a solid idea who it is that will be reading them. Like the event that sets Darrek’s fate in motion, his story was formed from pure compulsion and curiosity, and it wasn’t something I intended, initially to share.

The first chapter was written in one shot, one night, after being inspired by video footage of a real male Dominant and submissive couple together and wondering what the story behind the BDSM was. What were those people like? If you sat down with them at a bar to have a beer, how would the conversation go? How did they get involved in the D/s lifestyle? What were the motivations and emotions underneath the sexuality?

I incorrectly assumed, at first, that Darrek’s first trip to Diadem was the farthest he could go. It was his extreme, or maybe even beyond his extreme, and that was all it was supposed to be—a short story of a first-timer’s trip to a dungeon. But then a funny thing happened. That first spark was still there, but now it had shifted, and was burning between Gabriel and Darrek; something intangible that made me want to dig deeper, and keep going. And so, like Darrek, I fell down the rabbit hole into another world. The more I researched and learned about 24/7 Dominant/submissive lifestyles, and the people who live them, the more I grew to appreciate them and the astonishing level of surrender and power that takes place. To be made as helpless, as secure as a submissive, or as entrusted as a Dominant, is a gift overflowing with a freedom unlike any other. There is a private bond there that I respect and I feel blessed that I was able to learn about those aspects of the human psyche. Maybe if more of us were brave enough to leave self-consciousness, fear and doubt behind, and indulge in that which our heart and our body tell us we need (with consenting adults), we as a society could be happier. Own yourselves, no matter what anyone else thinks, because you are exactly who you were supposed to be.

This book would not exist if not for the support and constant encouragement of my friends and readers. I am humbled and grateful for each and every one of you, every second of every day. With love, this is for you.

Five years ago,
Lynn Kelling
spontaneously started writing and hasn’t stopped since. It all started with the desire to take a closer look at behaviors and ideas lurking at the fringes of life—basically anything that people may hesitate to speak of in mixed company, but everyone wonders about anyway. She is drawn to that which some may consider to be taboo—the darker and wilder the better—in order to expose the humanity within it. Our most telling moments are conveyed through intimacy and that which makes us feel vulnerable, powerful, or both, and so what could be more intriguing? Lynn is an artist and lover of any form of creative self-expression that comes from a place of honesty and emotion, whether it’s body art or opera. She works as a multimedia designer in the Philadelphia area where she lives with her husband and two children.

This classic gay BDSM novel, set near the end of the Viet Nam war, has been out of print for almost 20 years.

Long before “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” being queer in the military was a one-way ticket to dishonorable discharge and a psychiatric diagnosis for mental disorder. In The Brig, a young sailor awaiting discharge as a conscientious objector is confined to a military prison where he tortured with pain, fear, sexuality, and mind games to force changes in his psyche and break his spirit. Yet, the sailor learns things about himself and his captors that will transform him and challenge those who hold him. (M/M)
