Chapter Twenty-Five

Scarlett leaned against Jesse’s back, her arms around his waist, the sound of the motorbike making it impossible to talk. She watched the houses and cars they passed and tried to figure out where they were going. She had a feeling Jesse had taken them on a meandering trip, just to keep her guessing. It now seemed like they were headed for his house. His and Thomas’ house. When they pulled up in front of Thomas’ shed, she hit him on the arm.

Laughing at her, he hopped off the bike.

The moment she was off the bike, and the helmet was hanging on the handlebars, Scarlett put her hands on her hips. “You sure you couldn’t have gone via Townsville?”

Jesse tried to put his arms around her, but she pushed at his chest and glared at him. He continued to grin. “You wouldn’t deny me a kiss when I’ve so recently been on my death bed?”

“Recently! Try nearly a fortnight ago and you used your demon powers to finish healing. You’re going to have to stop doing that.”

“Then you’re going to have to stay out of danger,” Jesse said.

Scarlett shook her head. “I’m a demon hunter. It goes with the territory.”

“Then I’m not about to stay in bed recuperating if I can hurry up the process without becoming a demon. I’ll always be at your side when you face danger.”

Scarlett’s glare softened. “I’ve been doing this for years. I can manage without you at my side.”

“I know. But I like to be there anyway.”

Scarlett relaxed her arm and let him pull her close. “So why did you bring me here? And don’t look at me like that.”

“Like what?” Jesse tried for an innocent expression.

“Dessert. Now why are we here?”

Jesse chuckled. “Well, since you can’t be tempted…”

“I can’t.”

Jesse led her to the doors of his father’s shed. It was an old timber building with two large doors at the front and dusty windows scattered along each side. Pulling out a key, he inserted it into the large padlock. He looked down at her with a smile.

“Quit with the theatrics.” Scarlett pushed his hands out of the way and turned the key. She removed the padlock and swung the door open to stare in open-mouthed surprise.

Jesse stepped inside and flicked on a switch to flood the building with light. An eighteen-foot timber yacht, on a trailer, sat in the middle of the building. A thin layer of dust covered the benches that ran either side of the shed, but the boat was spotless.

“Where did it come from?” Scarlett looked between the sailing boat and Jesse.

“Dad’s had it for a couple of decades. Apparently I was once a good sailor.” He grinned at her.

She couldn’t help worrying. He didn’t have the memories, only the body. “Have you done any sailing in your past life?”

Jesse chuckled. “All manner of craft. I’m not about to capsize her.”

“Capsize her? You’re taking her somewhere?” She stared at the boat. She could almost feel the movement of the deck beneath her feet, nearly hear the snap of the sails as they filled with the wind. It had been so long since she’d been sailing.

Jesse took her hand. “We won’t be able to sail around Australia, but how about Moreton Bay? Will that do?”

Scarlett threw her arms around Jesse, holding him tight. “Perfect. Absolutely perfect.”
