“What are you doing?”

Devlin’s fingers froze over the keyboard
as a soft, warm, fragrant presence wrapped itself around him. He leaned back into her, unable to stop his grin. He’d dared her to prove she was his girlfriend, and man, did that woman take her dares seriously. She’d nearly
girlfriended
him to death. It had been awesome. Afterwards she’d fallen asleep, and while he’d wanted more, he’d decided she needed her rest. So he’d padded naked over to the desk to do a little work and ended up deleting some old photos from his phone. He didn’t want them. Not anymore.

“
What am I doing?”

“Umm hmm.”

He tapped in a few words. “Right now?”

“Of course right now.”

“I’m writing a review.”

“Blech. Don’t you ever stop?”

He spun around in his chair to face her and barked a laugh. She was wearing his jeans. They were way too big. And obstructed the view. He tugged them off and pulled her into his lap. Her silky skin rubbed against his. He couldn’t help but explore…a little. “I like writing reviews.”

“Do ya?” She kissed him. Her mouth was
delectable.

“I do.”

She ran her palm over his cheek and up to his forehead, riffling his hair. She studied him and frowned.

“What?”

She shrugged. “I dunno. There was a flicker when you said that.”

“A flicker?”

“Yeah. Like you almost didn’t believe it. Or you were trying to convince yourself it’s true.”

Damn. She was observant when she wanted to be.
“I love writing reviews.”

Her brow arched. “Flicker.”

“I do…” Her scrutiny of him was ruthless. “Okay. Don’t get me wrong, I do love what I do but…”

“But?”

“But don’t you ever dream about doing something more important? Something meaningful?”

She
shrugged. “Pastries
are
important and meaningful.”

“This is true.” He knew better than to argue with her on that point. “But I was speaking metaphorically.”

“Ah. Metaphorically. So you meant ‘you’ as in
you
.”

His
smile might have been a little sheepish. “Okay. Yeah.”

“Well, what kind of meaningful and important thing do you dream of doing?”

“I don’t know.” He pulled her closer and tucked her head into his shoulder. She toyed with his chest hair in a most distracting way. “My brother did something very important. He joined the Army. Fought for our country. Sacrificed his legs for national security. And I… I write pointless reviews.”

“They’re hardly pointless.”

He grunted. “It doesn’t seem like a good balance somehow.”

“Hmm.”

He tipped his head to glance down at her, intrigued by her tone. “What?”

She kissed the underside of his chin once, twice,
three times. As though she wanted to do that all day. “I think you already know what kind of important and significant thing you want to do.”

He liked the way she curled around him
and nestled in, his girlfriend. It gave him…ideas. “This meaningful and important thing, might it involve your tongue and a gallon of peanut butter?”

She smacked him, but gently. “
Quit retreating.”

“I’m not.”

“You are. You know what it is, this other thing you want to do. If you’ve dreamed of it, you know what it is.”

Heat rose in his cheeks. “I do. But…”

“But what?”

“I’m embarrassed to say.”

“So it does involve peanut butter…”

He couldn’t help but laugh. “No. It’s writing. But…” He dipped his head, unable to look her in the eye. “I think I would like to try writing a novel.”

When she didn’t laugh, he peeped at her.

he wasn’t staring at him bug-eyed, which was encouraging, so he looked her full on.

And w
hen she smiled and said, in a very serious tone, “Devlin, I think that would be wonderful,” he knew—
simply knew
—she was the one for him.

And he was the one for her.

Forever.

He pulled her close for a kiss.
When it ended, they were both breathless.

“God, Devlin,” she sighed, nuzzling deeper into his embrace.

He stroked her back. “I know.”

“It just feels so…right.”

“I know.”

She peeped up at him, her adorable face wreathed in worry. “I’m scared.”

He pressed his lips to her forehead. “I know. But I’m here. We’ll work through all of it together. Okay?”

Even though she nodded, she nibbled her lower lip, the tell for her hidden doubt. She fixated on his chin, riffling his scruff with her fingers. She pressed a little kiss on the underside.
“I don’t know what I would do if…”

Yeah. He knew what she was thinking.
If they didn’t work out
. “That’s not going to happen.” Not if he had a damn thing to say about it. “We’re gonna be great, Tara. We’re gonna be awesome. Forever.”

He didn’t intend for that last little word to escape, but it did. He stilled, studied her, gauging her response.

That it was a smile, a rapturous smile, filled his heart with joy.

“Forever?”
An awestruck whisper, as though she’d never dared contemplate such a thing.

“Yup.
As long as you want me, I’ll be here. You’re stuck with me.”

Her tentative
demeanor became certain. And mischievous. “Oh, I’ll probably want you for a while.”

“I’m gratified.”

“At least twenty years or so.” She shifted, deliberately. His cock stirred.

“O
-only twenty?”

She shrugged. “Maybe more.”

“Hmm. That many years… Seems like a challenge.”

The glint in her eye set his blood aflame.
“Do you think you can handle it?”

“Maybe.”

She wiggled on his lap.

Or…m
aybe not. At least, not without tipping her, ass over elbows, and sinking deep.

“Well, Devlin Fox,” she quipped, slipping off his lap and onto her knees before him. “I dare you to try.”
