Persephone walked up to Rebecca. “Glad to see you’re still alive; although, I must admit, it would not have been
so
bad for me if you died and we could see each other more often.”

Rebecca laughed nervously and said with unease, “Thanks. . .”

“I’m kidding, Rebecca. It’s good. It’s nice to see Dionysus so happy.”

“He is the bell of the ball, isn’t he?”

They both watched Dionysus chatting up anyone who would lend an ear, making grand sweeping gestures with a smile wider than the sun. He noticed them looking over and cheers his glass which was filled with grape juice.

Dionysus had invented grape juice right before being ripped apart by a “monster” in service to Hera. He had never drank it again, claiming that it would only touch his lips once more when he was
sure
that happiness had arrived.

Having heard the story before, Persephone recited it to Rebecca.

“And this is—?”

Persephone nodded. “The first time.”

“Not even with—?”

“Nope. . .” She put her hand on Rebecca’s shoulder. “You’re number one, baby, stuck with that fool.”

She chuckled. “You have a fool, yourself.”

Hades was manipulating shadows and making skeleton puppets for young Cyclops’ who roared in laughter at the sight. “Yeah, I do, not too shabby though.”

“Not too shabby, indeed.”

Apollo came over, beaming  a smile that Rebecca could see by shading her eyes. He said, “Rebecca. . . I hear you’ll be leaving us shortly.”

Persephone said, “I’ll let you talk. See you soon.”

“See you,” she said, watching Persephone join her husband and smiling. Smiling at the prospect of what her and Dionysus could be, correction, would be. She turned her attention to Apollo. “Yes, we’ll be back in a year or so.”

They had decided last night after some passionate love-making that they should see the world together, see all the wonders that Rebecca never had the coin to go see. She had been traveling aimlessly around America; and yet, she had
really
seen nothing but small towns, big cities and piety dreams.

Rebecca was delighted with the idea, and Dionysus was
even
more so. He rambled and dodged in and out of different stories. Many went a bit like this:

“Ah. . . The pyramids. We have to see the pyramids. I once saw Moses.”

“What?”

“Oh! And Turkey. . . What a beautiful country.”

“Turkey sounds—”

“How could I forget the shops of Dubai? You should’ve seen it centuries ago. . .”

And on and on and on, he talked much of the night pacing around and Rebecca was smiling beside herself. She was radiant, because a man,
her man
wanted to show her all these things and spend every second he could with her.

Apollo said, “Here.”

He handed her a blank note. “What’s this?”

“Write a poem and stuff it in the nearest fridge. I’ll bring the both of you back to The Old Watering Hole.”

She held it up and put it in her pocket. “Thanks.” She thought for a moment then said, “Dionysus can’t travel back here?”

“He can”—he nodded—“but it can take him a long time. He can’t teleport or anything. You should ask him about his time roaming the desert with the Jews. Took him the better part of a century to get back.”

She snorted, shaking her head. “Figures.”

“What?”

“That you’re a secret part of histories known.”

“Of course,” he said, puffing up his chest. “I spent time with Alexander The Great, myself.”

“Oh? Gay lover?”

“How did you know? And he was
my
gay lover. . . It was an interesting phase for me.”

Although considerably intriguing, Rebecca did not want a long story of rear door entry by Apollo. “Right.”

He beamed his brilliant smile. “I will leave you with some advice.”

“I knew you would.”

Love is eternal, or so they say.

I’ve never found such love in my day.

Y
ou traverse the world to find it.

Sometimes. . . you are only given a bit.

So cherish, young one, I say.

Because tomorrow. . . you may pay.

He bowed, turned around and left. Rebecca was left gawking at him. “He
really
needs some pussy.”

Hermes snuck up behind her. “Who?”

“Ah. . . you.”

“Ah. . . me.”

“I’m glad, this time, you chose to hit something that wasn’t me.”

He placed his hand on top of his helmet, grinning madly. “How ’bout that? The streak’s over.”

“Back to the Gas Station?”

He nodded. “Yup, there are always more mortals to guide.”

“How come I didn’t see any?”

“You guys seem to trickle in; once in a while, there can be a rush.”

“What’s a rush?”

“Oh, I don’t know, uh, three?”

“Right. You said we have a mission here.” She looked over to Dionysus and grinned. “I know what mine was.”

“Good. We need him. We need you.”

“Oh?”

“Fate’s hand guided a love so strong, a bond so tight. It will be needed.”

“For what?”

“The end of days. Why do you think we’re still around?”

“I see.”

He tapped his hand on her shoulder. “I see Eros. I need to
elevate
myself.”

Talking to his shadow, she said, “Did he just imply?”

Artemis said behind her, “Yeah, Eros can be an
interesting
influence.”

Surprised, Rebecca jumped forward then whipped around. “Oh, Artemis, how are you?”

“I took your advice.”

“That quick?”

“Champagne is not that far. He was very inadequate.”

Rebecca scoffed. “Most are.”

“I had to try again.”

“Oh?”

“He was
much
better. Do you think I can arrange a situation where we don’t have a romantic relationship but I can go to him when in a sexually heightened state?”

It took everything,
everything
for Rebecca not to burst out laughing. She bit her tongue ferociously, trying to abate it. She succeeded by concentrating on the grass and the pain. She looked back up, seeing Artemis’ face with not a hint of sarcasm or silliness, took a deep breath then said, “I
think
that will be a very easy task for you.”

“Do you?”

“I do.”

“Fantastic. I will let him know our new arrangement soon.”

“I’m sure, he’ll be delighted.”

Artemis walked away, saying nothing more.

Dionysus approached and wrapped his arm around her. “What do you think?”

She smiled and rubbed his cheek. “I think. . . I think, I’ll keep you around.”

He laughed joyously and they both watched the sunset, seeing their future together on the horizon.
