Romeo’s shoulder rubs against mine as he starts checking voicemail.

Hawthorne stares straight ahead, deep in thought.

“You know what I could use before we go home?” I ask. “A really nice dinner. Champagne. What just happened didn’t go well, but it was a long time coming.”

“Perfect,” Romeo agrees. He hangs up his phone and slides it into his pocket.

The limo pulls into traffic, leaving my past behind us.
