. During a research trip to Guernsey a number of years ago, I was invited to go with Channel Islands Occupation Society members on a “ramble” with the visiting Jack Jabolinski, former driver to General Dini, the Luftwaffe commander of the Channel Islands. Jack, attired in his old uniform, visited the places he knew during the Occupation and told fascinating stories. At one point, he spoke casually of cats being stewed in a pot for a long period of time before they could be divested of fleas and mites enough to be edible.

. Lewis, April 12–13, 1945. The verdict of history seems to be that these were, indeed, the Georgian Russians. Both Richard Heaume and Alf Williams came to the conclusion that the use of a knife rather than a pistol and the brutality of the attack marked it as an assault by one or more of the Russian volunteer troops (Private interview with Richard Heaume and Alf Williams, 2003).
