On a serious note, while PEMA is an imaginary illness, the plight of children in the foster-care system is very real. As a society we are largely failing these kids, but there are organizations that advocate for them, including Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children (www.casaforchildren.org) and the Children’s Defense Fund (www.childrensdefense.org). And you don’t have to be an adult to help—the American Academy of Pediatrics has a list of suggestions for teens, including starting a backpack program so that children in foster care have items for school. More information is available at www.aap.org/fostercare/advocacy.html.
