Chapter One

The hot Texas sun blazed down, and the humidity was thick and unrelenting on Drew Radcliff as he pounded steel posts into the hard ground. It was July, and the earth was hard from lack of rain, the landscape turning brown and making his work miserable. But misery loves company. After hitting rock three times, Drew took a break to wipe the sweat off his brow that kept finding its way into his eyes. With each swipe of his towel, more sweat developed.

The radio in the truck was blaring country music, and Drew resumed his work, tossing his towel into the bed of the truck. He had taken off his shirt, and muscles rippled across his back, abdomen, and arms with each downward stoke of his driver.

An announcer interrupted Drew’s rhythm he had found to the music. “Looks like another hot day in the listening area as temps are expected to reach ninety-eight degrees in the shade. Stay hydrated out there.”

“Just fucking wonderful!” Drew said as the thud from his post driver thumped on another rock. “More rock, great!” He cursed it and kicked the T-post he was trying to drive into the concrete-like soil.

This wasn’t a good day to be out building fences, but Drew needed to stay busy. He needed to keep his dick at bay that woke him this morning. His dick had landed him in a hell of a lot trouble last year, and now he was punishing himself and his wayward cock.

Today was the anniversary of the day his world came crashing in. One year ago today, his stripper fiancée had taken a bullet to the back that was meant for Regan, his brother’s wife, and wound up in the hospital in critical condition. It served the bitch right, Drew thought then and now as well.

Drew had been a major fool by getting involved with the stripper in the first place. He had met Luscious Cherry at the Dollhouse Gentleman’s Club in Dallas at a buddy’s bachelor party. Drew had been taken by her immediately, his vision blurred, and his heart hammered in his chest. Of course his dick went rigid instantly when Cherry took the stage. She was petite and short with nice round breasts, pouty lips, and flaming red hair. Drew loved her confidence and admired her wicked smile and how her body was seduced by the music. He supposed another reason he was attracted to her was because of her career choice. It was definitely the type of job that would give his father a heart attack, stroke, or any other life-threatening ailment, and for some reason that was a plus. All he wanted after watching her dance was to own her heart or mindlessly fuck her. It didn’t matter which at the time. He just wanted her.

Thank heavens his brother Damon had been so distrustful and stuck his nose in to find out more about Cherry. If Damon hadn’t meddled and devised a plan to learn more about Luscious Cherry, aka Shay Reynolds, pictures of Drew would have wound up in the tabloids and newspapers in very compromising positions, the triple-
X
kind. And it wasn’t just him that would have suffered.

With his father, Eugene Radcliff, running for re-election as a senator of Texas, Drew became a prime target as well as Damon. Not that Drew gave two shits about his father’s election or anything like that, but he really didn’t want to disgrace his mother and their family name. Thinking back, it might have bothered him if the situation cost his father the election, then again maybe not. His father was, for the most part, a moral man with stern rules. He didn’t tolerate insubordination or failure. At times before his elected position they had lived a rather normal ranch life, with the exception of his father’s state-prosecuting position which kept him away from home constantly. That was okay with Drew, too. It meant less brow-beating and ass-chewing from the man. At times, he was a good father as far as fathers went. He kept them fed, paid the bills, and kept the ranch running, but other than that he was too much into his work to be a dad. Then his father ran for office and, well…life changed again, and Drew saw less and less of the man except during a campaign when his father needed to show the state he was a family man, i.e. a good person.

Drew had, over the years, become tired of the political life, campaigning, and the whole running-for-office concept. He was under a microscope, and that got old real quick. He really just wanted to be an average man and not be held to the expectations that were so generously doled out to him. So maybe in the grand scheme of his mind, his actions were in rebellion to what his father stood for. It sounded stupid really because Drew was twenty-eight years old at the time. But when Shay turned him down for a date the night of the bachelor party, he became determined to win her. Drew now knew he should have cut his losses and walked away, but no, he had to let his dick lead him. He should have known better.

Shay Reynolds was Drew’s ex-fiancée’s real name, but she did go by “Cherry” at the club. Drew knew he wanted her and had to have her that first night he saw her, so he set out to do just that. He had heard about a floral shop in Dallas that had a unique reputation for helping men like him out. On a whim, he called What Women Want Florist Shoppe and spoke with the owner and floral designer, Regan O’Connor. She was sweet, professional, and she put him at ease. He explained his situation to her, and she assured him that he would, indeed, get a first date. Regan formulated a strategy for him, and she handled the rest. Lo and behold, the day the arrangement was delivered to the club, Drew received a call from Shay.

The conversation with Shay had been easy. She seemed fun and outgoing with an added bonus of having an exotic-sounding voice. It was then he claimed her in his mind. One thing led to another, and after a few dates and some damn hot nights, Drew was eating out of her hands. Before he knew it, he was proposing.

Drew shook his head, thinking back. Shay had really had him, and now he couldn’t understand why. He’d had plenty of hot women warming his bed, but with Shay it was different. Not only did she fit every desirable quality he had for a woman he dated, but she was a stripper, and his father never would have given his blessings. That was an instant plus one in Shay’s favor. But Drew didn’t mention her occupation when he introduced her to the family, and instead concocted a story that she was finishing college. His parents beamed, and Shay won their heart with her very well-crafted personality and charm, the same charm that sucked him in.

With a thud, Drew’s post driver landed in the back of his truck. He reached for his towel to wipe the trickling sweat again. His mind was unable to let go of it all. If Damon hadn’t hired Regan to go into the club and obtain a job in order to learn about Shay, they’d have all been screwed, and not in the good way. Not the kind Drew liked anyway.

As it turned out, Damon’s suspicions were dead-on. Shay was involved with the owner of the club, Randy Morano, in business as well as intimately. Drew gripped his towel tighter thinking about all the times he went to that club and Shay would disappear to fuck Randy. His blood boiled, and not because Shay was his woman, but because he was such a damned fool and so blinded by her. He gritted his teeth just thinking about Shay looking at him with her smoldering eyes and professing her love for him. And what topped it off was the fact that it was planned. Shay and Randy planned a blackmail scheme against Drew when they realized who his father was. What better way to get to the senator of Texas than through his half-cocked son?
But really, what trumps your fiancée fucking their boss?
