Coconut Oil for Beautiful Skin

Coconut is more than a fabulous food—it’s also one of the great beauty secrets of the tropics. The lovely, velvety skin so characteristic of tropical peoples, despite their spending so much time in the sun, comes from the combination of a healthy diet, rich in coconut oil and vitamin A from seafood, plus liberal use of coconut oil on the skin.

Westerners who try coconut oil on their skin report a new softness, magically reduced pores and wrinkles, and even the disappearance of rashes, fungal infections, scars, and warts. Acne blemishes dry up quickly, and the skin heals well.

When you first try coconut oil, you may notice an initial outbreak of small pimples, but this is actually a cleansing effect, and it soon clears up. For skin care, be sure to use virgin coconut oil that has not been processed with harsh chemicals.

Several coconut oil–based cosmetic products are available from Tropical Traditions, tropicaltraditions.com, (866) 311-2626, if you don’t feel like making your own.

Bath Oil

For dry skin, add coconut oil to your bath. If you like, toss in a few drops of essential oils as well. After the bath, apply more coconut oil directly to your skin to make it soft and beautiful, especially during the driest times of the year.

Acne

People who suffer from serious acne have told us that the following recipe greatly decreases their blemishes and scarring:

1 cup virgin coconut oil

1
?
4
cup aloe vera gel

Apply to skin several times per day. This also works wonders on stretch marks!

Remember that getting off processed foods and taking cod-liver oil is a must for treating acne. Pharmaceutical acne preparations are based on synthetic vitamin A, which can have some serious side effects. Much better to get natural vitamin A from cod-liver oil.

Wrinkles

Virgin coconut oil is the perfect wrinkle preventer. Free of harmful additives and chemicals, it is well absorbed and never makes the face look greasy. Coconut oil not only protects against new wrinkles, but also helps existing small wrinkles disappear. The combination of coconut oil applied nightly to the skin plus coconut oil and cod-liver oil in the diet is the recipe for beautiful skin right into advanced old age.

Hair

In the Philippines, women soak their hair in coconut oil for 30 minutes before shampooing. Sometimes they apply a very small amount of coconut oil after washing their hair, starting with the ends and working it back toward the scalp. If you swim in chlorinated pools, be sure to apply coconut oil to your hair before going in the water to keep it soft and shiny.

Psoriasis and Eczema

Here’s an excellent remedy for these stubborn skin conditions. Very often, severe cases of psoriasis and eczema clear up with just a few applications.

1 cup unrefined coconut oil

10 drops lavender essential oil

Fungal Infections

This excellent remedy works wonders with fungal infections and rashes.

1 cup unrefined coconut oil

1 teaspoon tea tree oil

Apply to the feet for athlete’s foot, as well as to any rash that may be fungal in origin.

Arthritis and Joint Pains

Traditional native massage therapists of the Philippines use coconut oil for swollen joints, muscle pains, and even broken bones. Often the oil is infused with local herbs, including cayenne, a native wild hot pepper. So we offer you this recipe, to use on your own aches and pains.

1 cup unrefined coconut oil

1 tablespoon organic cayenne pepper

Set the coconut oil in a glass container in simmering water. When the oil is thoroughly melted, add the cayenne. Let it sit in simmering water for about half an hour, until the cayenne has thoroughly released its various healing compounds. Let it cool and then massage it into painful joints or sprained muscles.

Warts

Apply coconut oil to warts several times per day—they often will disappear!

Deodorant

Coconut oil is an excellent deodorant. You can add an essential oil to it if you want some fragrance, but it works wonders used straight, even when you are doing manual labor. And it doesn’t stain your clothes!

Insect Repellent

Many people are concerned about using insect repellent containing insecticides such as DEET. A mixture of coconut oil and essential oils makes an excellent insect repellent without the dangers of harsh pesticides. In a 2001 study reported on CNN and posted at ScienceDaily.com, catnip oil proved highly effective against mosquitoes. Several excellent commercial formulations are available from Tropical Traditions, tropicaltraditions.com, (866) 311-2626, or you can make your own:

1 cup virgin coconut oil

1 teaspoon other essential oil, such as citronella,

1 teaspoon catnip oil

lemongrass, peppermint, or tans
