t had been three weeks
, and I had to fight the urge, every second of every day, to pick up the damned phone and call CJ. I was starting to feel as if I needed her in my life. I had such a bond with her, such a connection that went far beyond sex.
But I knew that I couldn’t. It was for the best. She knew too much as it was. And she really didn’t know the details on what I did for the syndicate. If she knew the details, then she really would either be in trouble, or she would leave me.
I was protected, I knew. My father was powerful, and he would make sure that no bad would come to me. But CJ was vulnerable. I simply couldn’t risk having her know more than she already did. And if we stayed together, her knowing more would be inevitable.
B
ut
, later on that day,
came the phone call where everything changed for me.
“Asher?” an unfamiliar voice said to me as I answered the phone that afternoon.
“Yes, who is this?” I asked.
“It’s Scarlett.”
“Oh, yes, yes,” I said. “I thought I recognized your voice.”
“I need to talk to you about CJ.”
My heart started to pound. I hoped against hope that she was okay. “CJ. Okay. What about her?”
“She got a job a few weeks ago with one of the major news magazines in town. And she took a picture of something that she probably shouldn’t have.”
I listened intently, trying not to panic. “Something she shouldn’t have?”
“Yes,” she said. “I can’t go into too much of the phone, but she’s gone, Asher. She’s gone. And I need your help in finding her.”
And, just like that, my instincts were in full gear.
I was going to have to save her.
And I probably was going to have to do it quick.
