Chapter Twenty

I woke up a few hours later wrapped in Bryce’s arms. I smiled to myself and tried to snuggle closer to him. I felt his arms tighten around me.

“You awake, beautiful?” he whispered, kissing the top of my head.

I rolled over so that I was looking into his eyes. “Hey.” I smiled at him.

“Want to go get something to eat?”

“How about we just order something.”

“Pizza or Chinese?”

“Chinese. I have menus in the kitchen. I’ll go grab them.” I pulled out of his arms. I reached for his t-shirt and tugged it over my head as I started to make my way to the kitchen. I stopped in my doorway, leaning up against the doorjamb. The sight before me was perfection. Bryce was sitting up in my bed with his phone in his hand.

“You know, I could get used to this.” I smiled at him.

“Used to what? Me in your bed or you wearing my shirt?” he asked.

“Both, actually.” After grabbing the menus, I crawled back into bed and handed them over. I always got the same thing—steamed dumplings and orange chicken.

Bryce called to place our order as I got up to feed the cats. Having Bryce here was great. But for some reason I couldn’t get over this feeling I had in the pit of my stomach. I didn’t know what it was or why. I just had a bad feeling about something and couldn’t put my finger on it.

I brushed it off and slipped on a pair of yoga pants as we waited for our food to arrive. We made our way to the living room and flipped on the television. By the time we had found something to watch, the food had arrived.

The entire day passed by and I didn’t even realize how late it was. Tomorrow was Monday and I had a class on world history at eight in the morning. I really needed to pick a major. I had taken so many general education classes already.

“As much as I would rather stay, I need to get going.” He smirked at me. I stuck out my bottom lip.

“You’re probably going to need your shirt, huh?” I pouted. I pulled his shirt over my head, leaving me only in my panties, and held it away from him. “Well, then, you are going to have to come get it.”

He walked over to me, pulling the shirt from my grasp and tossing it to the floor before picking me up and pushing me against the wall. I instinctively wrapped my legs around his waist and my arms around his neck.

“Tomorrow,” he whispered as he pressed his lips against mine. He set me back on the floor. I didn’t want to let go. He turned around and picked up his shirt, pulling it on over his head as he walked toward the door. He stopped before opening it. “See you tomorrow, Laura.” He gave me a smirk as he turned around and walked out the door. I stood there topless and stared at the door even after he had left.

The emotions of everything that had happened were overwhelming. I didn’t know what was happening between us. I did know that I was falling hard and fast for him. I sat back down on the couch and wrapped a blanket around me. I let him see parts of me that even I tried to avoid looking at. He stayed. He didn’t run away screaming like I had thought he would. Bryce was different.

Chapter Twenty-One

Classes on Monday seemed to drag. The idea of seeing Bryce later took over my every thought. Everything reminded me of him. I would walk past someone on the way to class and smell his cologne. This was crazy. How could he invade my life so easily? We had only known each other for a short period of time, yet he’d become a huge part of my life.

When class finally ended I went back to my apartment. My phone beeped as I was walking in the door. I set my bag down and fished out my phone. Bryce. I smiled as I checked his text.

My house 7ish?

See you around 7
.

After sending my reply, I set my phone down and turned on the radio. I spent the next few hours trying to get my cats to entertain me. They were more than comfortable now, but still didn’t want to play with the basket of toys I had purchased for them. I found an old tote bag and loaded up all the unused toys, and then made a mental note to take them to the rescue center where I had adopted Hansel and Gretel.

My phone rang. It was Melody.

“Hello, Mel,” I answered.

“Faith! You didn’t call after your date. How did it go? I need details, woman, so don’t spare them.”

“Well, it was okay.”

“Okay, just okay?”

“Yeah. It didn’t help that my mom showed up just before Bryce got here to pick me up, and then I had to wait until he showed up before she would leave. She also invited him over for dinner.”

“Are you for serious? How did that go, did he say yes?”

“We haven’t talked about it yet.”

“Your killing me here, Faith. Did you do him?”

“Right for the juicy details, huh?”

“You know it. Now spill, how was he? Does he have a big cock?”

“I don’t know how big his cock is, Melody. I didn’t fuck him.”

“What? Why not? I mean, weddings make me horny as fuck.”

“Melody, I have to go. I’m getting ready to go to Bryce’s house.”

“Oh, are you going to do the dirty? Did you shave? Condoms, don’t forget condoms, we don’t want any little Faiths or Bryces running around just yet.” She laughed.

There was no way that would happen, not that she would know.

“I gotta go. I will talk to you later. Bye.” I hit the end button on my phone.

Kids. That was one thing that was not in the cards for me. The doctors told me the amount of chemo and radiation I had gone through pretty much sealed the deal on that one. That was just another thing I needed to tell Bryce. Being with me was like being with a ticking time bomb. Neither of us would ever know when it would explode. It could be today, tomorrow, or next year.

I made it to Bryce’s house by six forty-five. I pulled into the driveway and sat in my car for a second before making my way to his door. I knocked and waited for him to answer.

He ushered me inside and shut the door before kissing me hello. “Hey.” I smiled before kissing him back. Bryce was the perfect height. He wasn’t super tall like most girls go for. He stood at least six inches taller than me, but I didn’t have to climb on a chair to kiss him.

He took me by my hand and led me to the kitchen.

“Is this all you, or did you order it?” I smiled as he held out a chair for me to sit.

“Actually, I made it all.” He placed a plate of bread on the table. “Okay, I didn’t make the bread, but the lasagna I did make.” He smiled, bringing two plates with huge slices of lasagna on them, placing one in front of me.

I didn’t have the heart to tell him I loathed lasagna. I picked at it, taking small bites as we made small talk while eating. When he was done and realized most of mine was still on my plate, he looked up at me.

“You didn’t like it?”

“No, it was good…for lasagna. But I really don’t like lasagna, and since you went through all the trouble to make it I didn’t want to hurt your feelings. I’m sorry.”

“Are you still hungry? I can order a pizza or something.”

“No, it’s okay, really. Thank you for cooking me dinner.” I got up and kissed him. “But what I really like is dessert,” I whispered in his ear as I straddled him.

“Hmm, dessert, huh?” He stood up, holding me to him as I wrapped my legs around his waist.

“I could really go for some dessert right now.” I bit his earlobe and pulled on it with my teeth.

He carried me to his bedroom and laid me on top of his bed. I kicked my shoes off before leaning up on my elbows. He crawled over the top of me. As soon as our lips touched, it was as if we couldn’t get enough. We sat up, breaking the kiss only so that he could pull my shirt over my head, and I his. He pulled my face back to his, biting down on my lower lip.

I reached behind me and unhooked my bra, letting it slide down my arms and dropping it to the floor. He pushed me back, his lips moving from mine as he kissed his way down my chin to my neck before sitting up and pulling my pants off my body one leg at a time. I sat up and unbuttoned his pants, pushing them off, leaving him standing in front of me in only his boxer briefs. I looked up at him before pressing kisses to his stomach, trailing them up to his chest, and then biting on his nipple and tugging on it with my teeth. I noticed a wicked grin on his face just seconds before he pushed me back on his bed with him on top of me. His mouth attacked mine as I slid my hands down his body, stopping at his waist and pushing his boxers down. The only thing between him and me was the thin silk and lace of my panties.

He pulled away from the kiss and made his way down my body, kissing and biting until he got to my hips, where he used his teeth to grab the thin waistband of my panties, pulling them down my legs. He was doing it so slow that it was torture. When my panties finally hit the floor, I was trembling with anticipation.

Every nerve ending in my body was tingling for his touch. He slid his body back up over mine. He rubbed my pussy as he took my earlobe into his mouth, gently biting and pulling on it. I could feel his cock pressing against me. I jutted my hips forward, wanting him inside me. He teased me with his fingers before pulling away and sliding his cock slowly into me. I let out a deep breath as he took his time, letting my body adjust to his size before pushing the rest of the way in. He paused, looking into my eyes as if to make sure I was okay before he began to rock himself in and out of me.

As he kissed my neck, I met him thrust for thrust as I could feel myself getting closer and closer to release. He bit down on my neck near my shoulder, pushing me over the edge. I could feel myself tighten against him as I came. He paused before continuing to thrust into me, trembling slightly as he came. He slid out of me and stretched out next to me, pulling me to him so that my back was tight against his chest.

“You want to stay the night?” he asked.

“As much as I would love to stay here wrapped in your arms, I can’t. I have a doctor’s appointment in the morning.” I looked over at the clock on the wall. “And looking at the time, I really need to get going. But I don’t want to get out of this bed.” I smiled as I rolled over so that I was facing him.

“Just stay a little bit longer,” he whispered, pressing a kiss to my lips.

“You are making it hard for me to say no,” I replied between kisses.

“Then stay.”

“I really can’t, but maybe next time.” I pushed myself out from his arms and went in search of my clothes.

Chapter Twenty-Two

I woke up the next morning sore from my night with Bryce. I showered and dressed as I waited for my mom to show up so that we could go to my appointment. She never missed a single one. I sat on the couch with Hansel and Gretel, a huge smile on my face that I couldn’t seem to shake.

There was nothing that was going to ruin my day. As I sat there, all I could think about was how perfect my life was at the moment. How I had finally found happiness. A happiness I never thought would come. A knock on the door shook me from my thoughts. I picked up my purse and answered the door.

“Ready to go?” my mom asked when I opened the door.

“Yup.” I locked the door after exiting.

The ride to the doctor’s office was normally quiet. My mom would let me sulk, and I tried to think about anything but the visit.

“How was your date the other night?” she asked.

“It was nice.” I smiled. She didn’t need to know what really happened.

“Does he know?” She looked over at me, frowning.

“Yeah, he does.”

“Good, I’m glad. So is this serious or just a little fling?”

“Mom.”

“What, Laura? I want to know. It’s been too long since you had a guy in your life. I just want to know what’s going on.” She beamed. “It’s just really good to see you dating again, that’s all. You look really happy. I missed that smile of yours.”

I watched a tear escape the corner of her eye, but I refused to answer. I didn’t know what Bryce and I were. I just knew that right now he made me happy. That’s the only thing that mattered, not labels. I’d had enough labels in my life; I didn’t need another one.

We pulled up to the doctor’s office. The smile on my face was still intact. I laughed to myself at that thought, considering I’d never walked into a doctor’s office with a smile on my face.

We sat as we waited for my name to be called. I looked around, realizing I had never paid much attention to the room. I never noticed the bright yellow walls, or the colorful paintings that hung on them. Nor did I notice the way the light had shown in through the windows, casting a glow on the furniture.

“Laura.” I heard my name being called and looked up to see a nurse waiting for me.

Mom and I stood up and followed her back to the doctor’s office. I realized I had never paid attention to the pale green walls that lined the halls, either. Things appeared different, as if I was seeing them for the first time. I followed my mom as she walked in to Dr. Phillips’s office and took a seat in the black leather chair. I took a seat next to her.

“How are you doing today, Laura?” he asked.

“Actually, really good.” I smiled.

“Good. I’m glad to hear that. Let’s go over these blood tests. Everything looks really good except for your white cell count. I want to run another test. For now, everything is as good as we can hope for. Let’s not worry too much until we get the new test results.”

My smile dropped from my face. The vividness of color I was seeing before had faded to blacks and grays.

“Laura, I called down to the lab and they are ready to do another draw. I will put a rush on the tests and will know more by tomorrow.”

He handed me a stack of papers. My mother took them from him and thanked him for his time. I got up and followed her to the door as we made our way across the hall to where the lab was located. I checked in at the desk and took a seat, then stared down at my hands as I waited for my name to be called.
