“BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!!!!!!!!”

Chapter Nine

5 Years Later

The sun shined brighter than ever and the trees swayed to a beat all their own. It was a glorious September morning. Birds chirped and squirrels ran along the sidewalk in search of something to eat. On the radio, Rickey Smiley, Ebony, and Gary with Da Tea joked about current events. While driving down the highway, Koran reflected on the past five years of his life. A lot had changed.

He’d gone to college and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. For the past year he’d been studying for his Master’s. With the help of Whitney’s parents and outside associates, he’d opened a cancer center called ‘Hopes.’ Since opening, they’d been able to successfully treat well over fifteen patients.

Trina had moved onto the next big baller, but they were able to get along without constantly beefing. Malik was now a teenager and playing football.

The biggest change in his life was Harlow. She was the apple of her daddy’s eye. Koran had never known a love like the one they shared. Whitney was right. She kept him so busy he had no time to question whether or not he could he raise her without Whitney. There were times when he looked into Harlow’s eyes and cried, and some nights were so dreadful he couldn’t sleep. He missed the security of knowing Whitney would be there when he lay his head down at night. His lips longed for the taste of her mouth on his.

Nightmares of her death had plagued his dreams for months, but with time Koran’s soul began to heal.

He couldn’t mope around or be mad. Besides, his little girl needed him and he needed her. Now here they were, father and daughter, exploring a new adventure together. Koran nervously made his way into the parking lot of Harlow’s school. Today was the first day of the school year and Harlow’s first day of kindergarten. Koran, with his camcorder in hand, got out and opened the passenger side door. His leading lady was ready for her close-up.

“Are you sure I look good, Daddy?” Harlow asked before stepping out of the car.

Just like her mother, Harlow loved clothes. That day she wore an outfit her grandma Joan had picked out—a green pea coat inspired jacket with a white ruffled shirt underneath. The rest of the outfit consisted of a black skirt with matching suspenders, white and black polka dot tights and shiny patent leather Mary Janes. Harlow’s long, curly hair was parted down the middle and twisted into spiral shaped pigtails and a little bit of baby hair graced her forehead. To complete her ensemble, she rocked a green purse and book bag.

“You look perfect, baby girl,” Koran guaranteed, videotaping her.

“I can’t be lookin’ a mess, Daddy,” she explained, getting out.

“You’re not.” Koran chuckled as they made their way into the building.

“Are you excited about your first day of kindergarten?” he asked.

“Uh-huh.”

“Whose gonna pick you from school today?”

“You, Daddy.” Harlow giggled as she stood in front of her classroom door.

“So what are you gonna learn today?”

“Ummm.” She twisted from side to side. “Letteeeeeeeeers—”

“Letters and numbers,” Koran joined in. “Are you gonna color?”

“Yep.”

“What’s your teacher’s name?”

“Miss Wellllllls.”

“Miss Wells, wow. You know what?”

“What, Daddy?” Harlow laughed again.

“You remind me of someone special I used to know. She was smart and pretty and funny, just like you. And guess what?”

“What?”

“You look just like her, too. You even have the same dimples she had. Can you guess who I’m talkin’ about?”

“Uh-huh.”

“Who?”

“Mommy!”

“That’s right, sweetheart.” Koran reached out and hugged her with his free arm. “Now have a good day. I love you.”

“I love you too, Daddy.”

Koran turned off the camera and made his way back to the car. Outside, he took a look up at the sky and wondered if Whitney was watching. His question was answered when a white butterfly fluttered by. Koran couldn’t help but smile. Although she wasn’t physically there, Koran could feel her spirit. Their love had no limits. It was unique and one-of-a-kind. Whitney had shown him the light. His heart’s dictionary defined her. There was no need for him to search for forever anymore, ’cause he’d already found it in her.

Ghetto Luv

Urban novel takes you straight to the ‘hood and leaves you laughing

Sassy. Urban. Funny. Mary Wilson’s
Ghetto Luv
is “in your face,” with the cat-and-mouse game between the Keke and Libra as the backdrop. Keke is one of the most handsome brothas in the ‘hood, definitely smooth when it comes to the ladies.

Neighborhood diva Libra is described as “every man’s dream and every woman’s nightmare.” She and her two girls rule the streets, but Libra is clearly the standout of the three. She is full of spunk, confidence and street smarts - the mistress of seduction with her drop-dead gorgeous looks. Looking for the queen of St. Louis’ West End? Libra holds the title and the attitude to go along with it.

The novel is soaked with brazen sex and hardcore violence. You’ll understand why when you meet Libra’s girlfriends.

Books can be purchased at most on-line stores such as Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Books are distributed by Ingram.
