High school senior, Moxie, agrees to be moral support for her friend, Patches, who is totally enamored with a college boy, so she says yes to a double date, even though she has to lie to her parents to do it. But Moxie wasn’t counting on lying about her age to get into an x-rated movie, and she definitely wasn’t counting on her date’s Roman hands and Russian fingers, or the fact that the pants she’s borrowed from Patches are several sizes too small. By the end of the night, Moxie finds herself in far more trouble than she bargained for!

Baby Kisses

Maddie hates asking for help, but she lets her older stepbrother, Greg, come to her rescue. He agrees to accompany her to a friend’s baby shower in a strange city, because her guide dog, Ruben, is “in the shop,” as Greg puts it.

She adores her bright, funny, handsome stepbrother’s company, and even if her friend, Lisa, didn’t tell her constantly what gorgeous, ripped hottie he turned out to be, she remembers what he looks like—because his was the last sweet face she saw before a high school case of meningitis left her blind.

When Maddie comes back from the baby shower feeling sorry for herself—still a virgin at twenty-two, afraid no man will ever come calling, and her just ripe for the plucking—Greg tells her he has a surprise. He’s booked a massage for her with a fellow masseur to cheer her up.

As Maddie’s mind and body begin to relax, she confesses things to the foreign, non-English speaking man with the magic hands that she’s never told anyone. Taboo things about her own stepbrother, how she lusts after him, how much she wants him to take her, and make her his own.

And that’s when she finds out that the stranger who’s making her feel so good, might not be so strange after all…

Maddie heard the click of the receptionist’s nails on marble and faint ‘thinking’ sounds as the girl checked through her computer. Greg’s tricep went rigid under Maddie’s fingers and she knew without being able to see him that he was rolling his eyes.

“You’re both definitely with the Van Tulleken party?” There was a hint of desperation in the girl’s voice.

Greg sighed. “Elaine Westgait made the booking, so she’s probably listed us as Maddison and Gregory Thomson. If you find me, please change that to Greg Preston. I’m her step-brother, not her brother.”

“Oh! I found you!” The receptionist gave a nervous little chuckle. “I’m so sorry for the delay—I’m a little new, on top of all the confusion. You’re all checked in now. Ma’am, do you have a leader dog with you this weekend?”

Maddie laughed and nudged Greg. “Yeah, this one.”

“I’ve put you in adjoining rooms up on the first floor. Need any help with your bags?”

“It’s fine,” Greg said. “I got it.”

Maddie felt her hand slope onto the hard warmth of his forearm as he bent, grunted and straightened again. Although Greg kept busy managing his four physical therapy centers from afar, he still had the hard build of the masseur. She could feel corded muscle sliding under her fingertips.

Greg tugged his elbow forward a little. “Right… turn! Forward… march! Hup two, hup two.”

She grinned as she matched his halting pace, knowing he was fighting the weight of the baggage. “Elevator or stairs?”

“You may think you’re a genius for packing a hippopotamus, but heavy suitcase or not, we’re still taking the stairs.”

“Dammit.” She smiled, resigned. “I thought you were seeing someone about your claustrophobia?”

“His office was too small.”

“Greg… your jokes are getting worse.”

“I know.”

She could hear his grin.

They made their way up to the first floor and she landmarked the first stairwell by recognizing her favourite floral scent—fresias. Four bolts held a cool metal handrail to the wall, about a meter apart. Then they doubled back, taking another ten steps up to the hallway. As he always did, Greg kept quiet to let her concentrate as she got her bearings. Left at the top, and then twenty paces until they stopped again. He took her stick from her and she reached down with her left hand, feeling the embossed edge of a glossy wooden table.

“Ok, I’m good.” She smiled at him, wishing for the millionth time that she could still see his returning grin.

The door clicked open and Greg guided her in. “Whoa—swish place. It’s probably about fifteen steps just to get to the bed. You might wanna hire a bike to get around.”

Maddie giggled. “That big?”

“Seriously—it’s not far off from being a Ritz-Carlton Hotel. I’m really, really glad we’re not paying for any of this. I’ll say this for the Van Tullekens—they might exist in a different financial universe, but they’re generous with it.”

She grinned. “It’s Lisa’s mom’s way of coping with the situation. She’s decided that it would be undignified to play down Lisa’s pregnancy, so she’s gone the opposite direction. Now she’s all ‘we think it’s
wonderful
she’s having her family so early! She can have a career too!’”

Greg chuckled. “Is she just as happy about who the father is?”

“Meh.” Maddie pulled a face. She’d spent the night on the phone to Lisa when the little blue lines came up on her friend’s pregnancy test. Lisa had been more worried about confessing her little affair with her chauffeur than the prospect of raising a child.

“Mike’s a stand-up guy. He’ll cope. And he loves Lisa, I know that much.”

She heard Greg flop onto the bed while she oriented herself in the room. He wasn’t kidding about the size. The bathroom alone seemed bigger than standard Holiday Inn accommodations. She found the sink, washed up, and made her way back over to the bed, using Greg’s aftershave as a directional anchor. She reached her left hand out and found the top of her case. Greg helped her lift it onto the bed, but let her find the zipper and open it. She pulled off the tank she was wearing and felt through her packing, laying stuff out in clockwise order on the bed.

“So, why’s Ruben ‘in the shop’?” Greg asked. “I get that the teaching assistant’s dog has to behave and not chew the kids, but I thought he was about as well-trained as he’s ever going to be.”

“For
my
needs, he is. But we’ve got a couple new kids joining Mrs. Austin’s class and one of them has seizures. Ruben’s learning to detect the aura.”

“Oh, he’ll ace that. He’s an awesome bullshit detector, so he’ll pick up an aura no problem.”

Maddie started giggling and couldn’t stop. “How—and why—have you been bullshitting my dog?”

“They didn’t have his usual organic food at the store so I tried plying him with the regular. He just
looked
at me—and not in that adoring way he looks at you.”

She grinned before picking up on the wistful tone in his voice. Then suddenly he was all activity, bounding off of the bed.

“Hey, I’ll just take my stuff to my room, then I’ll take you to Complicated-Baby-Shower-Part-1.”

What was up with him?

She moved right in his way as he made for his room, almost falling over as they collided. His strong hands were light as they caught the backs of her arms but he overcompensated, pitching back on the bed and pulling her onto him in a straddle.

“Whoa, you okay?” His laugh sounded nervous.

I’m
fine, you just stay still one moment!”

"Ohhhh-kay." His voice was a little hoarse as she put her hands up to his face and found it hot.

“That’s either a serious blush, or a low-grade fever you didn’t tell me about.”

“It’s a blush.” He cleared his throat. “You’re not wearing very much.”

Her fingertips closed on his stubble. He hadn't shaved in a couple days. She traced along his jaw and up to the sharp angle by his ear. His breathing picked as her thumbs swept beneath his lower lip, and her fingertips over his cheekbones. When she slipped her fingers into his hair he gasped, and she felt his thighs clench beneath her.

She was sure she hadn’t imagined that.

His sharp inhale made her tighten up inside. She quit her examination and put her arms around his shoulders in a hug. His forearms crossed over the small of her back and they held onto one another for a long, quiet moment. It seemed really important—to keep things ‘normal’—that she didn’t raise her face just then. If she did, she’d probably try to find his lips with hers.

And they couldn’t do that.

There was something a little subdued about his grip and he felt hot, even through his t-shirt. “You’re a little over-warm. Maybe you should get some rest. I can go by myself, if you like?”

“Nope, I’ll take you there. But maybe I’ll take a nap or catch a movie and you can see your own way back to your room?”

“Deal.” She climbed off, missing the feel of him already.

“I’ll just go wash up. Back in ten.”

There was silence as he made his way to the door of his adjoining room—deep carpet was not her friend—and then she heard the rattle of the handle. Then water running. She imagined him under the shower, his hands smoothing gel over his lean body.

She had to breathe out hard to shake off that mental image.

He’d been gorgeous when he was twenty two and, according to Lisa, all that had changed was his fifteen-pound gain in muscle bulk and a few laughter lines. Not being able to see him had helped Maddie tamp down her feelings for him, though she could still picture his green-grey eyes, his sandy cut neatly into the nape of his neck, the very slight dimple in his chin. What kept her crush live and kicking was his sense of humor and endless patience—and the hot glow she got inside each time he so much as put a guiding hand on her.

She had a crystal clear memory of how he looked, because his was the last face she’d ever seen.

One morning in her sophomore year, when he was still helping out their football coach, she’d made it to school even though she felt kind of like she was coming down with something. Throughout the day she got sicker, developing a migraine and then a rash. She’d stumbled out of her math class and pretty much dropped at Greg’s feet just as he was guiding some jock to the nurse’s room with a suspected torn rotor cuff.

It had been Greg’s 911 meningitis alert that got the EMTs on site fast enough to save her.

Maddie got up and occupied herself with finding her blue top with the raised flower trim and skinny straps. Lisa had help her choose it because it ‘made her eyes really pop’, and it was a nice contrast to her light tan and blonde hair. The top had an inbuilt-bra, which she loved. She tugged on the fitted top, struggling a little with the high-tension clasp at the back. She wanted the bra done up before Greg came back from his shower. She wasn’t sure she could handle the feel of his fingers brushing the dip of her spine as he did her up.
