“Like a sated little night cat,” she said, wondering where she got that idea. “I feel great. What about you?”

He kissed her nose. “There’s no way I could be inside of you and not feel great. It’s not possible.”

He separated them and leaned over her. “I may yet have to go to Afghanistan, but there’s a strong possibility that I won’t.”

“How do you know?”

“No one told me that, but two of the generals who came to see me in the hospital said Stateside duty wasn’t a bad thing, especially for a strategist, which is what I’m thought to be. So I’m guessing I won’t be going to Afghanistan. That won’t please me, mind you, because I left some unfinished business there. I’m just telling you what I think will happen.”

“I’m with you, whether you go or stay.”

He wrapped his arms around her. “That’s what I needed to hear. Can we get married? Soon?”

“Would a month suit you?”

“I’ll be a good husband to you, and a good father to our children.”

She supposed her face lit up like a neon sign. “I don’t doubt that. I’ll be honored to be your wife.”

“You’ll be starting with a family. Lena is a fixture in my life. She’s as much a part of my family as Ricky is.”

“How many ways can you find to endear yourself to me? I’m glad you love my aunt.”

“I work at home late some nights. Can you sleep with a light on?”

She felt her smile when it was still deep inside of her. “I always sleep with a light on. I do my pushups just before hopping into bed. Will that bother you?”

“Not one bit,” he said, his eyes twinkling with happiness. “I sing while I shave, usually as loud as possible.”

“Good Lord, I hope you can sing.”

“Boys’ choir, cross my heart. I love you, woman.”

“I love you, too, General Wainwright.”

He put his arms around her, rested her head on his shoulder and went to sleep a happy man.
