He reaches down and picks up his phone and takes my hand pulling me inside. I sit down on the couch, tears streaming down my face as I listen to him talk while he paces the floor. “Yes. Okay. Thanks so much.” He squats down in front of me and my eyes search his waiting to hear what he says. “There’s a doctor not far from here that Dr. Phillip told me to take you to. The plane is on its way. Do you need help changing?” I shake my head but I can’t seem to move. He stands, lifting me in his arms and carries me to our bedroom. Setting me on the bed, he helps me remove my bathing suit and pulls a sundress over my head and I pull my arms through. He pulls a pair of my clean panties over my legs and I stand, holding onto his strong shoulder as he gets them in place. He then grabs my flip flops and I step into them and he lifts me into his arms again, carrying me through the house, picking up his wallet on the way from the table and I bury my face into his neck as he takes me down the long dock. As we walk I can hear the plane’s engines getting closer and we don’t have to wait long until we’ve boarded and he sets me into a seat, buckling me in. As we take off quickly he leans over, kisses the top of my head and pulls me close to him. I worry my hands together in my lap and thinking about why this has to happen to us, why our baby? It seems like only a matter of minutes before we land and then again when we arrive in a cab to a building. As I sit numbly in a patient’s room, after peeing into a cup and seeing more blood, I’m wondering what it would have been like to hold our baby, kiss it’s chubby cheeks and listen to it coo.

A male doctor enters the room, his smile warm but does nothing to admonish my fear. He sits down in front of me and looks at Bo then me. “Well, I hear from my friend Phillip that you’re expecting but there’s a little fear?” I can only nod and feel my tears returning. “Ah! Let’s see what’s going on, shall we? Have you been examined recently?” I shake my head, my body shaking as Bo squeezes my hand. “I see. Lay back for me, please, and we’ll take a look.” Bo helps me lay down, and I put my bare feet into the stirrups, my heart beating wildly as I look up at the ceiling and I jump a little as I feel a cold clamp and some warm liquid inside me. “You’ll feel just a little discomfort for just a moment, I’m sorry about that.” I turn my head when I hear a beeping noise and see a monitor. “How far along are you?”

I look at him and smile sadly. “A little over six weeks now. Is everything okay?”

He smiles and nods. “There can be a little bit of spot bleeding, it’s not uncommon but if you look over here at the monitor I think you’ll see why. If you look here you can see your baby. But then over here you will notice there’s another sac.” He points his finger to the monitor, and I can see a little blob, then another. “Here the beeps? That is your babies’ heartbeats, which are good and strong. As you can see your baby’s facial features are in the beginning stages of forming in this sac but in this other one, not quite as much yet. Again, very common with twins.”

I turn my head to Bo, his mouth hanging open with the news and I can’t stop my chin from quivering as my tears stream down my face. I tug on his hand and his face turns to me, his eyes wide and his mouth snaps shut. He looks over at the doctor who nods. “Twins? Really?”

“Yes, I hope this is good news.” The doctor looks back at me and smiles. “Congratulations. By the surprised looks on your faces I take it you didn’t know.” I nod and he laughs.

“How? How can we see this so soon,” Bo asks.

“Ah! Modern technology! An ultrasound can show all kinds of thing in the first trimester of pregnancy but only when you’re between six to eight weeks at the earliest. Luckily, they were willing to show themselves to us today.” I watch as Bo squints at the monitor as he studies our little babies.

“When can we find out the sex of our babies?” He asks still squinting at the screen and I’m so relieved and shocked that I still can’t speak.

I look at the doctor when he laughs. “Ah, well, that can be tricky even with only one baby but with twins it can be a little harder, at times. Sometimes, one sac likes to hide behind the other as they grow and move around but you can try to find out around seventeen to nineteen weeks into the pregnancy. I will print off some pictures for you two to take with you.” I watch as he presses some buttons below the monitor and look over at Bo, who’s also watching intently. “There. Are there any more questions before I let you clean up and get dressed?” We both shake our heads and I feel relief when he releases the clamp and then removes his gloves while standing. “Very good. I’ll be sure to fax this information to Phillip as soon as I leave here and he will in turn send them on to your OB.” He holds out his hand and he and Bo help me to sit up, Bo immediately moving the thin sheet around over my legs to cover me up better. Not like the doctor didn’t just have his hand inside me or anything but I stifle my laugh and let Bo do what he needs to. The doctor walks to the door, opens it and turns his head to us. “Congratulations again. No worries about the small amount of blood. Be rest assured that everything is just fine. Get some rest when you return and please don’t hesitate to call me if you need anything or have any questions at any time during your stay.” He closes the door on his way out and I snap my head to Bo, who’s got the biggest grin on his gorgeous face. I’m freaking out inside but filled with more happiness that I’m about to explode.

“Oh, my God! We’re having twins!” I shriek.
