Chapter 1

Selene

Nothing made my heart bleed more than when I snuck into the hospital room to see Lucky. I told a nurse how much Lucky meant to me and asked her how he was doing.  She said he was doing well and would recover with no complications. This time. He’d been roughed up pretty good and was sleeping soundly from the narcotic they had given him. I touched his face. He didn’t flinch. A tear slipped down my face. We’d fought against the world to be together, but fate had other plans.

“This is why I have to give you up, Lucky,” I whispered. “It kills me to see you this way. And it was all because of
me
. You saved my life like some kind of brave knight and this is your reward. It’s pretty fucked up, huh? You saved the princess. We should be riding off into the sunset on your white stallion…or bike. But our fairytale is more twisted than any normal one. We’re destined to be kept apart, no matter how much we struggle to be together.”

I let out a long sob. “I’m so sorry, baby. I wish it would’ve been me and not you. Because you don’t deserve this. Nobody does.” A trembling breath escaped my lips. “Why do you have to be a Stone Wolf? Why do I have to be a Black Heart? Maybe fate brought us together, but it’s no match for this fucked-up world.”

Staring down at his face, I knew I had to make the decision to leave him forever. Then, that gut-wrenching, ache started. Yes, it hurt to think about leaving. But it would be selfish for me to stay. If my father caught us, he would finish off Lucky with a single bullet to the head. No matter how much I loved him, I knew there was no future for us. We’d never get married. We’d never have kids. We’d never buy a house together. We’d never spend Christmas together. You know that ache? That tight feeling that accompanies sadness? Well, it was washing over me like a tidal wave. I clutched my heart; it actually felt like it was breaking.

The realization cut deeply. I wiped the tears flowing down my face. How could I live without this wonderful man in my life? I couldn’t breathe.

I couldn’t fucking breathe.

I felt a jolt of intense pain cut deep into me.

No, I can’t force myself to stop loving you.

“My heart has just been ripped out,” I sobbed. “I will bleed, night and day.”

I ran my fingers through his hair, then softly kissed his lips. “Goodbye, Lucky Morrison.”

Everything was a blur. But I made it back to my own hospital room. I collapsed to the floor as I sobbed and cried out loud as emotional pain wracked my body.

He was gone.
Out of my life forever. I’d make sure of that.  And I’d do it because I loved him. But damn, if it didn’t hurt. It was like someone stabbed me in the chest and twisted it. Crushing grief overwhelmed me. The torment was unbearable. And nothing could stop the sobs. I knew the new, gaping hole in my soul would never heal.

I borrowed a notebook and pen from one of the nurses. I wrote Lucky a note and left it on his bedside table.

***

Let’s face it. Breaking up is hard. Especially when you don’t want the relationship to end. I was torn, ripped apart. Day by day, I toughed it out. Nobody could grasp the depth of my pain. But through my tears, I tried to find the strength to withstand the storm. Move on? I couldn’t. I told grief to pack its shit and go. It didn’t listen. So I didn’t move on…but I stayed away from Lucky. Far away.

A year had passed since Lucky and I had split up. We’d both been left with bleeding hearts. It was the longest year of my life to say the least, but he'd stopped hounding me about six months ago. It hurt even more to watch him come to the resolution that we weren't going to happen than it did having to ignore him after that day in the hospital. There was nothing I could do but walk away. Keeping the man I loved safe meant far more than our happiness ever could. He didn't understand that, but I didn't give a shit. I knew what I was doing, and maybe one day for my diligence and sacrifice, I would be paid back.

Doubtful, but dreams do come true.

At least for other people.
