AVOID

Sugar, refined carbohydrates, alcohol, and cigarettes. These can all lead to the buildup of plaque and have a negative effect on nutrient status.

Carbonated drinks. These are high in sugar and phosphoric acid, both of which have a negative effect on the teeth and gums.

SUPPLEMENTS

My top supplement recommendation is coenzyme Q10, which improves oxygenation of the tissues and aids healing. It is often low in those with gum disease.

Supplement with vitamin C with bioflavanoids. These are needed for gum health and repair. Make sure you get a buffered vitamin C, as other types can be acidic and this would be detrimental to tooth health.

Take a bone-supporting formula. The teeth and bones are made of similar minerals, so similar nutrients can support both. Look for one containing calcium, magnesium, vitamin D, boron, zinc, and B vitamins.

EXTRA TIPS

Apply clove oil to painful or infected areas. Clove oil is well known for providing relief from teeth and gum problems.

Floss! Flossing removes food particles from between the teeth where brushing does not always reach. Floss at least twice a day.

Use natural mouthwashes. These can help to remove plaque and plaque-forming bacteria. Tea tree oil, grapefruit seed extract, goldenseal, myrrh oil, and sage are all good antibacterial oils to look for. A sea-salt water mouthwash can also be used to kill bacteria. Alternating between them may be even more effective.

Visit your dentist and hygienist regularly. This can help to identify problems before they become advanced and harder to treat.

Decaying teeth may need to be extracted or filled. Avoid mercury fillings where possible due to mercury’s effect on the nervous system. Go for ceramic fillings.
