Organic foods, as they do not contain chemicals and preservatives that can trigger attacks and challenge the immune system.

AVOID

Dairy products, as these are famously mucus-forming for many people.

Wheat, soy, chocolate, and eggs can also be mucus-forming.

Salt—high salt intake is linked to respiratory-tract disorders. Salt is in all processed and packaged foods, so avoid these.

Cold food and drinks—these can cause the airways to go into spasm.

HERBS AND SUPPLEMENTS

Note: For children under the age of 12, consult an herbalist for an herbal program.

The herb astragalus has been found to strengthen the lungs.

Other good herbs include peppermint, lobelia, skullcap, ephedra, and licorice.

Drink mullein tea. It can help to expel excess mucus and make breathing much easier. Pau d’arco tea also helps.

Take a few drops of lobelia during an attack to reduce the spasm and open the airways.

Magnesium to relax muscles and nerves.

Fish oils for their anti-inflammatory effect.

Vitamins B

and B
12
may help to reduce symptoms.

Vitamin C for anti-allergenic and anti-inflammatory effect.
