About the Author

Chapter One

Tara Duncan walked into her office and leaned over her desk to pick up a client folder and her agenda. She looked longingly at the comfy chair, wishing she could ease into it for just a short while. Her office wasn’t much—a small room with a view of the neighbouring building’s rooftop—but she’d always preferred a private work space to an open-concept area. She often spent half the day in the studio managing projects that the graphic artists and the quality assurance team were working on, or sitting in someone else’s office for a meeting.

A brief knock made her turn around and her pulse jumped, as it always did whenever she saw Jay Moretti. The account executive was a stunning package of powerful, toned muscles and handsome, Mediterranean looks. He was blessed with rugged masculinity, from the mischievous, smoky grey depths of his eyes, to the strong line of his nose and the stubborn angle of his square jaw. For Tara, his most blatantly sensual feature was his mouth. The wide, full contours evoked shameless erotic images if she dared to look at them for too long, resulting in a rush of heat to every erogenous zone of her body.

His mouth curved into a knowing smile, because a man like Jay was intimately familiar with female body language and, however hard she tried to control her reaction to him, he could pick up on the smallest things. Like the colour that she knew was seeping into her cheeks now. He knew the effect he had on her—had told her so last month in this very office.

“Tara, I just wanted to let you know that Etnex has approved the final proofs, so those are good to go.”

She attempted a subtle appraisal of him, taking in the broad shoulders that filled out a crisp, white shirt and the powerful thighs that pushed against relaxed-fit jeans. She tried to block out her body’s stirrings. “That’s great, thanks.”

His gaze swept over her, lingering for a few seconds on her breasts. Her nipples tightened and she fought the urge to press the objects in her hands to her chest.

Attraction sizzled between them like a live wire. No denying that. They just hadn’t acted on it. And she wanted to act on her impulse so badly she ached. Not a day went by that she didn’t fantasise about various inappropriate scenarios, like pulling him into the supply room so he could take her standing up against a rack of boxes, or bent forwards over her desk…

She’d been feeling like this for six long months. Almost since the day they had met, and even when she’d been dating her ex, a conservative engineer. Unfortunately, conservative hadn’t translated well in the bedroom, often leaving her unfulfilled.

Jay, though, ravished her with his gaze alone—a virile predator, that’s what he was. Heat liquefied in her pussy and she grimaced, knowing she’d stained another pair of panties. In all her professional life, she’d never been so aroused by a colleague, never been so sexually aware of anyone. A fact that infuriated her, because just last week Tara had almost collided with a furious Rebecca Levitt, who was storming out of Jay’s office while fastening the top buttons of her shirt. Tara wasn’t born yesterday, and she had her pride. She wasn’t going to become an addition to his current office affairs. The worst of it was the disappointment and the jealousy she still felt, because up until that incident she’d thought his interest in her was exclusive.

She gave herself a mental shake and pushed out an uneven breath. “I have a meeting.”

His wide frame was blocking the doorway. “Tara, when are we going to have that dinner?”

He had some nerve. She was tempted to ask if he’d bring Rebecca along, but that would mean exposing some raw feelings. “I don’t date colleagues.” There. That should discourage him. She saw the flash of frustration in his eyes and pressed on. “Now, can you move out of the way so I can get through?”

Their gazes waged a silent battle for a long moment before the corner of his mouth hooked upwards. He leaned against the door frame. “Go ahead.”

Her nose flared as she fought back the unattractive word that threatened to escape. The man was impossible. With a determined tilt to her chin, she crossed the room and brushed past him, picking up a whiff of the tantalising aqua notes of his cologne. As she walked down the hall, his gaze burnt twin spots on her backside.

After her meeting, she went into the studio and stopped by Penny’s desk. She and Penny had hit it off from the start and had become good work friends in a short time. Tara liked the young woman’s sharp humour, and they were both avid thriller fans. When she noticed a paperback copy of
The English Assassin
on Penny’s desk, she smiled and tapped it.

“Loved this one.”

Penny glanced away from her computer screen and returned the smile. “Can’t go wrong with Silva.”

“Nope. Did you bring lunch today?”

She nodded. “You?”

“No, didn’t have the time to prepare anything.” Tara glanced at the patter of rain against the window and frowned. Another wet day in Seattle. Thankfully, summer was around the corner. “Think I’ll do take-out.”

“Cool. I’ll be in the caf, usual time.”

“Sounds good. Oh, there’s a new file from JQ Foods on the FTP server, so disregard the one they sent yesterday. I hate when they do that, but you know how they are.”

“Yup. Are you going to the meeting?” She pushed her designer, black-rimmed glasses farther up the bridge of her slim nose.

“What meeting?”

“Jay sent everyone an email about fifteen minutes ago. Here, let me open it. ‘Important news to share. Join me in the boardroom at eleven, Jay.’”

Tara’s eyebrow lifted. “Wonder what that’s about?”

Penny pushed her chair back and stood up. “Let’s find out.”

Tara couldn’t help staring at the full curve of his mouth as he talked. It was too damn sensual…unfairly so. Therefore, it wasn’t her fault she was looking at it, wondering what it would feel like on…

“I’ll cut to the chase, folks. As some of you know, I’ve been working to land us a presentation with Sauber Spirits. Premium hard liquor producers…their products are currently distributed in twenty states. They’ve just about developed their first vodka, and they’re looking for package design,” Jay said, his grey eyes dancing with enthusiasm.

He was standing at the head of the long conference table, calm and confident as usual. Tara’s gaze moved over his broad shoulders and lean torso, picturing defined, olive-toned flesh underneath. She’d traced every inch in her mind countless times, both at work and during the lonely hours before falling asleep. She longed to press her mouth to the strong column of his throat and inhale that aqua-earthy scent.

The gestures of his hands drew her gaze. She liked looking at those, too, formed as they were with lean muscle and long fingers. Hands that
looked
like they knew how to please a woman. A sudden image of his fingers probing inside her sent a spiral of heat from her belly to her pussy.

She sucked her bottom lip between her teeth as her perusal went lower and lingered on the subtle bulge of his crotch. She’d fantasised about his cock, of course…flicking her tongue across the swollen head before stretching her lips around the silky hardness. And if his hands were anything to go by…

The heat in her pussy curled into a tight knot, making her shift in the chair.

“Why aren’t they using their current branding people?” someone asked.

“They want a young company to handle this product…produce something fresh, youthful.” He paused. “Their sales have been steady, but rising slowly.”

Jay cleared his throat, drawing her attention back to his face.

“The good news is we’ve been offered the presentation.” Applause erupted around the room for several seconds. “This is a client we want to have. The new vodka is just one project of several to come. Charles and I have a meeting with them tomorrow. Roughly, we’re looking at a two-week window to prepare the presentation.”

In spite of everything, she admired Jay’s professional skills. He had a sharp business sense and a positive drive that motivated those who reported to him, as well as the rest of the staff.

“So, in keeping with the spirit of this occasion—and, hopefully, our new client—let’s have a drink at Flynn’s around six tonight. Are we all game?” Jay glanced around the room as his invitation was met with a positive response. Her breath caught when his gaze rested on her, making her body stir with sharp awareness. When their eyes were in danger of locking for a second too long, one that would make everyone else disappear, she broke the contact.

Tara occasionally participated in these kinds of social activities, but she’d skip this one to avoid Jay. She filed out of the room with the others, but not before catching the shadow of a frown on his handsome face. He knew.

Chapter Two

Tara expected a nerve-racking week as she got off the elevator and headed through the cosy reception area with a quick wave at Frances, who was already answering calls. It was the second week of work on the Sauber presentation and the studio director was on vacation, which meant that Tara, being studio manager, had to take on both roles. Besides that, it meant frequent interaction with Jay, which was something she’d rather not have, because her body had a mind of its own where he was concerned.

Last night, she’d wrestled with the base cravings of her body, left hungry for far too long. Her sexual appetite had always been strong, craving spicier pleasures than the standard variety. How she ended up with men whose idea of raunchy was a blow job, she had no idea. She blamed herself, though, for letting the relationships drag on.
