Dora and I onto the ledge at the soddy. It was too high. We
couldn't climb up there. Out of nowhere he appeared, lifted us
both at the same time and set us up there. Away from the

snakes. He told me my Pa was on his way and to stay put. I
knew he meant you."
Snake hooked his hand around September's neck, pulling
her to his other side.
Ma's voice cracked as she declared. "That would be my
Jay. That's just what he'd do." She then wrapped her arms
around September and pulled her to her breasts.
Summer's gaze went to Eva. The girl blushed. "His face
just appeared. I didn't even realize I'd painted it until the
picture was done."
"It's perfect." Snake reached out and rested his hand on
Eva's shoulder. "It's perfect. That's my wife's guardian angel.
My Pa."
"Summer's got a guardian angel?" August asked. "Do you
got one, too?"
"I don't need one. I have a guardian bride," Snake said. He
turned then, drawing Summer's gaze to his. "Which means
we'll all always be watched over. In times when we need help,
and in times when we think we don't, there'll always be a
greater power overseeing our welfare."
Summer closed her eyes, absorbing the warmth oozing
into her body, mind, and soul. She welcomed Jonas, and
thanked him.
"I want a guardian angel, too," August admitted.
"You got one, honey. That there's your grandpa," Ma said.
"It is?"
"Yes, August, it is," Kid said reverently.

A smile sprang to life on Summer's lips as August
declared, "Whoopie. You hear that Jerome? We done got a Pa
and a Grandpa! Whoopie!"
Laughter broke out, filling the room with glee. Summer
opened her eyes and met the loving gaze of her husband. A
hand settled on her shoulder. She turned.
Buffalo Killer's eyes glistened with moisture. "You're home,
little sister. You're home."
She bowed her head in acknowledgment. "Yes, I am."
Turning back to her husband, with her heart full and beating
strong and steady, she added, "I am truly, finally home." Her
gaze then went to the painting. "We all are."
Everyone else was too busy laughing and carrying on, but
she saw Jonas wink. Snake squeezed her hand. He'd
witnessed it, too.
