~a witch’s tale
(New Adult) 14+

http://smarturl.it/WitchsTale

This is my only New Adult book to date. It is based on a girl, by the name of Alexi, who has lost her mother and lives with her Dad. They reside in a town called Ravenswood and everything seems fine up until a new boy moves to town and changes the timeline forever. This book is probably one of the funniest books I have written and it is packed with coming of age subjects as Alexi comes into her witchy powers and accepts love and loss.

~Breaking the cycle

When I was little I used to watch my Mother, Mary, as she worked in the garden. I think it was then that I first found my love for the early morning and the sunrise. She would always work in her large yellow hat, which oddly enough resembled the sun in so many ways to me. She was that to me, a Sun, a stable point in the vast universe of which I could revolve around. But regardless of how far out into the blackness I ended up, I always knew she would pull me back in to orbit. That was, until my Father became an alcoholic and started to beat her.

It w
as small things at first, a raised voice here and there, a slammed fist on the table. A thrown magazine, newspaper or whatever he had in his hands at the time. Then it evolved, as did his inability to control his temper. Harsh words made way for harsh actions. My Mother did not want to antagonize him, but her silence seemed to fuel him more than anything and he would accuse her of not caring at all, even though I think she was trying to save me.

I cannot say that
I did not hate her at one point. In fact, it took me a long time to even visit her grave. She had left me with him at the tender age of 12 and by that time his addiction was full blown. She had killed herself, she was dying already, but she ended it, herself. I know I never mentioned it before, but I think I was ashamed of it. After she died I felt as if she didn’t care about me at all and that may be true, I really have no idea. I mean, what would it take for a Mother to abandon her child? What would drive someone who had carried another being inside of themselves to then turn around and not stay as long as they could to make sure they were safe? I have to ask myself was it me? Was I too much to bear? Did I only remind her of the tie she would always have to a man who she ended up hating more than life itself? All questions I wish she could answer for me, but that came and went long ago and I am left here, with my own thought, regrets and questions of my own.

I turned my face towards the window as I watched the fire roll outside of it, twisting and turning as does life in so many ways. I then looked down at the small being feeding from me and I touched his face…my son, perhaps the only
one I would ever have and I have to ask myself the same questions that my Mother must have asked herself. But am I able to abandon a piece of me? Regardless of the means by which he came about? I mean if I do that am I not just as guilty as my Mother was of abandoning me? My son stared up at me and I looked into his eyes, as they shifted from red to black and back again. I touched his small head and my heart ached. I was not willing to hate him, how could I? But I can hate Lucifer, and oh, trust me…that I do, with every fiber of my being.

Chapter One

What a Fucking Mess

Gunner fell to the ground as everyone else did. They had been suspended in time and he moaned as his muscles ached, as if he had torn every one of them. Ari cursed at the sky as Finna pushed herself up to her feet and swayed. She may be a Viking, but it had affected her just as badly as it had everyone else. Dorin coughed up blood and rolled onto his side as he held his stomach. He had suffered a blow from a demon, just as Lucifer had decided to freeze everyone. He suddenly remembered the battle they had been in and he forced himself up as he then stared around in a circle and there was nothing. Not one demon in sight. It was almost as if nothing had happened at all, no cracked asphalt, no blood, everything erased.

“Halo,
” Gunner whispered as he tried his best to stand and then he looked at the ground, where she had been and his eyes filled with a look of panic.

“Where is she!?” he screamed as everyone tried to regain their senses. Dorin stared at him with compassion in his eyes as Gunner looked all around them.

“I am going there and I am ripping his fucking heart out,” he said as he gritted his teeth and started to walk away from everyone. Tercia started to follow, but Dorin caught up to her and grabbed her arm, stopping her dead in her tracks. She turned her face towards him and Dorin tilted his head as her eyes looked strangely vacant. He paused and she parted her lips allowing words to form.

“Dorin, I have
missed you,” she said quietly as she hugged him. He stood still for a moment and then raised his arms, returning the hug to her. She felt a bit ridged, which was not entirely misunderstood for someone who had fallen as a Hound and gone to Hell. He knew the torturous nature of Lucifer and of his sister. He could not imagine what Tercia had been through, not entirely. It had certainly changed her, changed how she felt in all ways. She relaxed and then turned her gaze towards Gunner.

“Marcus,” s
he said as even Ari and Finna stopped dusting themselves off and stared at him. He stopped when he heard his true name, as if a blade had been shoved clean through him. He sighed as he lifted his hands and stared at them, his head still low as he looked down. Tercia started to walk away from Dorin and he could not help but think that maybe she was exactly what Gunner needed. If anything could distract him from a suicide run to Hell, it could be her.

Tercia stepped up behind him and stopped. Her skin looking like
porcelain and her face framed in the blunt cut of her bangs. The moonlight broke through the clouded sky and shined on her purple hair once again as Gunner closed his eyes and let one slow breath out into the chilled air.

“I have missed you brother.”

He opened his eyes and turned to face her.

“You fell
, I watched you fall.”

She nodded and looked him over
, almost like a bird would their prey.

“That I did, but it was not the first time, so I was not afraid.”

“I…” he started to say.

She stepped up to him and placed one hand to his chest. He reached up and took her hand and held it there, her skin just as soft as it had always been and him feeling as if he needed to protect her.

“It was not your fault, it was my own,” she said to him and he held her hand tightly to his chest, the muscles in his jaw flexing as he heard the words and tried to accept them.

“I was given the responsibility to protect you and I have never been able to follow through.”

She stepped closer to him and placed her hand over his. “This guilt you carry is why you were branded with that curse.” She turned his hand over and stared at the pentagram embedded into his palm. He watched her as she stared at it and traced it with her fingertips.

“Lucifer enjoys watching you struggle, he enjoys watching all of us struggle. It is what feeds him, fills him with lust and power.”

Gunner watched her lips and then she lifted her eyes and stared into his.

“You have the power to defeat him, you always have
, but it has to be at the right time, and now is not that time for you my brother, my protector, my husband.”

She stepped back and stared at him as he looked her over.

Gunner hesitated as the last of her words bothered him. It had been a very long time since she had mentioned the word ‘husband’ and it did not sit well with him.

“Did he harm you?”

She laughed and then shook her head.

“That is like asking a child if they would like to play with toys, of course he harmed me, he harms everything in his wake.”

Gunner closed his eyes and lowered his hands to his side, his fists clinched as Tercia watched him react to her words. She then stepped up and placed two hands to his face and he opened his eyes and looked into hers.

“Y
ou cannot fail her,” she whispered to him as he let the words settle into his chest. His heart beat a slow and steady rhythm, almost like a drum calling him to war. He started to move and she shook her head and moved her fingers against the skin on his cheeks.

“You need to clear your head, eat…rest, if you go now you will do nothing but give him everything he desires.”

Gunner sighed and looked past her as Dorin, Ari and Finna looked on. His obligation was not only to Halo, it was to his sister and to them. If he left in haste he would probably fail and that would be a fate worse than death.

“So what would you have me do?” he asked her as his eyes locked onto hers.

“Prepare to win,” she said as her breath came out white and started to rise into the night sky.

****

I stood by the fire and watched the smoke rise up. I held my son and swayed back and forth until I heard the door unlock and open behind me. It is funny how much stronger I feel now, here in the last place I wish to be, but holding the one thing that is keeping me completely focused. I looked down at him as he stared up at me and then looked back towards the door as two women entered. They barely wore anything at all, both draped in see thru red fabric that wrapped behind their necks and down over their breasts. The fabric was held at their waists with a gold belt and then flowed downward in the middle, covering their clits, without much success at all. One walked towards me and then stopped as I tensed up and held my son to my chest. The other walked to the bed and stood there, they both had a strange feel to them, they calmed me as they both spoke in unison, eerily slowing my heart beat with each word they uttered.

“Halo, we would never harm you, we are here to help.”

Their words felt like a drug on my senses. A poison perhaps, but it caused my muscles to relax…right up until the one closest to me stepped up and reached towards my son. I held him close to me as I pivoted on one foot and kicked her square in the abdomen. She cried out as she flew across the room and hit the wall. She stuck there like some spider and hissed at me as she started to crawl up backwards and her twin flicked her tongue as her eyes turned a yellowish color. I turned and prepared to fight to my last breath, but then I heard a clapping and looked towards the door to see Lucifer standing there, grinning, as he looked me over. He snapped his fingers and the girl crawled down from the wall and across the floor on all fours resembling a spider even more now. Her partner lowered and did the same. Each stopped under one hand of his and he pet their heads as he looked down at the two of them lovingly.

“They would have d
one you absolutely no harm Halo,” he said as I gritted my teeth and held my son close to me. He then lifted his head and looked me over.

“You look remarkably well for just giving birth.”

“Shut up,” I said as the hatred poured out of me. He held his hands out and sighed as he could feel it. The hate pulsed through him and he moaned, deep in the back of his throat.

“Well, that was good for me, and you?”

“What do you want?” I said as I started to move from the fire and towards the other wall, getting a little more space between us. He waved his hands and his two spider bitches scrambled from the room, closing the door behind them. I stood there feeling strong and yet terrified at the same time. He lifted both hands up and covered his mouth, pulling them away as his eyes shifted from red to black and back again. I hated that, I hated seeing it. I had watched my son do the same as I held him and knowing that Lucifer was a part of him just made me ill.

“I came to help.”

I laughed as he suddenly snapped a finger and the door slammed open. Two small men came in with a large book that looked as if it was made from dried human flesh. I had to guess it had been. It seemed to be his favorite material to weave things out of. One small man stopped and the other let go of his end of the book. The one left holding it struggled to not drop it as the first man climbed onto his shoulders and then looked down, waving his hand. The man on the bottom grunted as he lifted the large book to him and he strained to hold it up. He opened it and tried to steady himself on the shoulders of the man beneath him. They swayed back and forth while Lucifer sighed.

“Really? Could you fucking stand still?” They both tried their best as Lucifer started to flip
through the pages, mumbling to himself as he did. He then looked up at me and smiled.

“How about Wolfgang?” he said to me as I blinked and stared at him in confusion.

“What?”

He tapped his finger to his lips and started to mumble again.

“No you are right, that is a bit ironic isn’t it?” he said as he rolled his eyes. “I mean “wolf” and “dog” are pretty much the same,” he added as he grinned.

“Oh!” he said as he placed his finger to
the page. “Apollo, that is a strong name.”

I stepped towards him and narrowed my eyes. “Are you trying to come up with a name for my son?” I asked him and he looked up at me. He waved a finger towards me and then to himself.

“Ours,” he said as I gritted my teeth and shook my head ‘no’.

“No, he is mine, not yours.”

Lucifer stood up straight and looked me over. “It takes two, that whole thing about Jesus was bullshit, procreation is procreation.”

“I didn’t know it was you.” I said as my voice shook. His face softened as he stared me down. “You cannot possibly hate me that much Halo, I felt your attraction to me from the very start.”

“That was not attraction, it was disgust. You have no idea how to separate the two.”

“I heard about this, this is that post traumatic syndrome thing women get after they have a baby
, right?”

“I don’t have that,
” I said and he smiled at me.

“You are not going to try to stab me are you? I mean
how would that look to our son?”

“Stop saying ours!’ I screamed at him as my son started to cry in my arms. Lucifer’s stare changed from one of wanting to toy with me to a bit of irritation.

“Let’s find a name shall we?” he said as he cocked his head and I looked down at my son to calm him. I swayed back and forth, reaching down as his tiny fingers wrapped my index finger. His grip strong and filling me with even more bravery.

“Now why the fuck would anyone call a boy Aeneus? I mean can you imagine the bullying?” he asked as he shook his head
and laughed out loud.

“He already has a name,
” I said as I stared at him and Lucifer stopped fingering the pages of his demonic baby book.

“What?”

I touched his face and smiled at him as my son grinned back at me. I looked up at Lucifer. “His name is Jet, Jet Bay.”

“Like an airplane?”

“Like the name I gave to him as his Mother,” I said as Lucifer stood his ground. There must have been something about my facial expression that told him to step the fuck off of me because he did not move.

“I can get used to that.”

“You don’t have to get used to anything Lucifer,” I said as he narrowed his eyes.

“That is our son.
I have every right to be with him as do you.”

“You deceived me. I would have never fucked you,
” I said as I stared him down.

“Halo, language.” He said to me as I looked down at Jet and he giggled. I had a feeling that language was the least of my worries with him.

“Let me hold him.”

I laughed and turned
slightly as he shook his head. The room suddenly darkened and Lucifer grew taller, his black wings spreading outward and filling half the room as I stood there and held Jet close to me. I feared for him, I had no idea if Lucifer would be a Father to him or damnation. I knew of the old biblical adages, the shit foretelling the end of the world with the coming of the anti-christ and yet when I looked at Jet I did not feel fear or see the end. I almost felt as if he had given me new life and a future, oddly enough. It is hard to explain it. I would assume it is something all Mothers feel as they hold their children. I looked up and my eyes became glossy with tears as Lucifer held his hands out and wanted to hold him. I would hate him forever, but this one thing bound us together now and I could not fight him as I held my son without risking hurting him. I stepped towards him, closer and closer and held Jet up to him as he reached down and took him. Jet began to cry as he left me and I felt a sudden emptiness as his cries echoed in the room. Lucifer held him up and smiled at him as Jet continued to wale and I covered my face and lowered to the ground as he laid eyes on his one true son and his only heir to the fires of Hell.
