Chapter One

At first the message she read didn’t sink in as it was so obviously not intended for her eyes.

“Hi, sexy. Last night was awesome. Told Aly I’m working late again, so see you in usual place at 8
,” followed by a bright smiley face icon.

Alyssa picked up her knitting and furiously started clicking her needles. A week ago her life had been full of promise. She and Sean were finally settled with new jobs and apartment. They had even started saving toward their future.

Her needles flew as she considered the number of nights Sean had “worked late.” She had accepted his explanation that he needed to establish himself in his new role and accepted that it was a necessary price to pay for future benefits.

Dropping yet another stitch in her work she threw the project across the room in frustration.

Aly’s job in the small local craft store suited her creative ways, and although the pay wasn’t much, it was a fair wage. The store held workshops as well, and it was an added bonus that in these she was able to be paid as she “worked.” There were a variety of people, including children, who came in to learn the various crafts the store provided for.

Jan Matelli, the owner of Crafty Cottage, was fast becoming a good friend, too. They worked well together as they seemed to have a lot in common, despite being from very different backgrounds. Whilst Aly had been orphaned at a young age and lived in foster homes for most of her life, Jan had been raised in a large extended family whose origins were in Italy. Despite this, they had clicked right away.

When she had agreed to accompany Sean to Canada, from her somewhat lonely and mundane life in England, it was the thought of a new life with new friends that had egged her on. Although she had a few friends she knew she could count on if needed, there was no special bond with anyone enough to keep her in England.

Sean’s parents were Canadian and he had painted a wonderful picture of the life there. Aly knew it was an opportunity that she couldn’t miss. His promise of marriage gave Aly the sense of security that she had craved all her life. She wasn’t sure if she loved him as she should, but she was fond of him and hoped that they could build on that in the future.

His relatives were from the small town of Huntsville, in the middle of lake country. That made things easy for him to move over, but for Aly, who was on a temporary work visa, it was a bit more complicated. However, the paperwork done and her small amount of belongings packed up into storage for the time being, she had embarked on the greatest journey of her life.

However, it had soon become apparent to Aly that although Sean had wanted her to come with him, he was rapidly doing a lot on his own. He still talked occasionally about marriage, but it seemed to have been put on a back burner. Their sex life had never been amazing but now it was almost nonexistent. Sean came home late each evening, many times after she had already gone on to bed. She had become no stranger to using her own hand to pleasure herself, and if she was being honest, the orgasms she gave herself were far above the halfhearted efforts that Sean attempted when they made love.

The previous night Sean had been late as usual. Aly had entered the darkened apartment, switching on the lamp in the hall and kicking off her shoes with a sigh of relief. Much as she loved her job, it was coming up to Halloween and the store was particularly busy, being the only craft shop in the immediate area.

As she ate a solitary microwave dinner in front of the TV, her cell buzzed with a message. Laying down her fork, she picked up her phone and read the text, expecting the usual excuse of work from Sean.

The blood drained from Aly’s face as she re-read the words on the small screen again. Her mind flew back to Sean’s words as he left this morning.

“Bye, love. Don’t forget I have that meeting tonight, so if I’m late, go on to bed and I’ll go sleep in the spare room so that I don’t disturb you.”

He had bent to kiss her cheek as she answered with a nod and grimace. “OK. But you can’t keep this up, Sean. I know your job is important to you but this is the third time this week you’ve had meetings. It’s not fair on you to make you attend every one of them, just because you’re new.” She turned toward him and smiled. “And you know I miss you when you’re out so late.”

Sean’s face screwed up with irritation as he snapped, “Well, you know this is important to me and I need to show I’m willing if I want to progress in the company. Do you have to keep nagging me about it?”

Her face had fallen as she said, “I’m not nagging, Sean. It’s just that I think they are taking advantage of you being new and it’s really no fun for me, sitting here night after night alone.”

She was trying not to whine, but it was becoming such a regular occurrence that she was getting fed up with it.

“I thought we were in this together but you’re rarely home and when you are you’re always so tired you just flop on the sofa and fall asleep in front of the TV. Even at the weekend you’re off playing golf or something else with ‘the boys.’ All I ever seem to do is work, clean, do laundry and shop for and cook food you’re always too tired to eat! What was the point of me coming halfway across the world with you if you don’t want to be together?”

Realising he needed to placate her, he had given her a quick hug and headed to the door.

“Aw, baby, of course I want us to be together. I just have to do this to get on in this firm. They appreciate the work ethic and I can’t be seen not to have it.”

He shot her one of the boyish grins he always used when he wanted to get round her and quickly slipped out of the door. As usual Aly backed down from the argument and called after him.

“Well, take care and don’t work too hard. Would you like dinner kept f…?”

But Sean was gone before she finished the sentence. She sighed.

I’ll take that as a no then.

Muttering under her breath, she turned back into the room and started her own preparations for work.

Chapter Two

Now she sat, numb with disbelief, as she realised that she had been taken for a fool. It appeared that Sean had been seeing someone else when he said he’d been working. Meanwhile, she had sat at home, seemingly safe in the knowledge that he was doing it all to help secure their future together. He knew her well enough to know that she wouldn’t have the courage to go out on her own and socialise. In fact he had probably been banking on her natural shyness to keep her at home whilst he was out, obviously having fun with someone else.

Her social life to date had consisted of a quick drink after work with Jan on an occasional Saturday evening at the local bar. It was nice to kick back after a busy week in the store and Aly always enjoyed Jan’s buoyant company. She had a confidence Aly knew she could never attain. They never stayed late though and she was usually home, alone, by nine at the latest.
