In Britain the belief that the exiled Poles were unreasonably anti-Soviet persisted until 1948, when Russia’s iron grip on Poland and the rest of Eastern Europe became glaringly
apparent.
As a result of trade union opposition, the placing of Poles in employment was at first painfully slow, and it was not until mid-1947 that significant numbers began to find work. Even then,
almost all the jobs were unskilled. For those who aspired to skilled and professional work, emigration remained the best option.
