Epilogue

A
few knocks
on my door startle me from my dark thoughts. The sound resonates through my brain like jungle drums.

"Go fuck yourself," I scream in the direction of the locked door. I wince. Moving my head was a bad idea.

I've been on sick leave ever since Kristal's been locked up.

Officially, I have the flu and excused for another couple of days. Seems the strain has been real severe this year. It takes people a good week to get back on their feet.

My plan is to remain roaring drunk until I have to get back to work and since I'm a mean drunk, I remain locked up in my place.

What I really need is a good fight to release all the anger I've kept bottled inside.

In a perfect world, there would be an intrusion and Pat would call me downstairs to go beat the shit out of some asshole. But Pat runs a tight ship and if hers is, mine is not a perfect world.

Another knock on the door and I watch the handle turn. Fuck, I was sure I had locked the stupid door. I stumble out of bed, ready to confront the idiot who has come to crash my self-pity party.

Can't a guy feel miserable by himself for a few days without someone sending the cavalry?

My murderous rage vanishes the second I identify my intruder. It's Bunny. With one hand, she's carrying a large bag of groceries and with the other, holding a bottle of my favorite whiskey as a peace offering.

I wave her in. She's a godsend. Yeah, I was about to run out of stuff to drink.

"I thought you would want some company," she says entering in the room and locking the door behind her.

She smiles, but I can see in her eyes that she's saddened by my sorry state. She drops her bag on my table and searches for a clean glass on my shelf.

"This is too good to drink straight from the bottle," she says pouring a glass and coming to the other side of the bed. She hands me the glass and walks into my bathroom.

I hear her turn the shower on and when she returns, I down the contents of the glass in three gulps.

Bunny shakes her head sadly.

"That was a waste of good whiskey," she observes.

I belch and nod.

Oh, no!

Nodding was such a bad idea.

The pounding in my head just took another dimension. Maybe Bunny's right, a shower will do me good.

With her help, I stand and walk to the bathroom.

She undresses me like a baby. It's not anything she hasn't seen before.

She pulls the curtain behind me as soon as I stand under the hot stream of water. A minute later, she hands me another glass with what I assume is headache medication. I swallow the pills down. I hope it's serious stuff cause my headache is a monster.

Five minutes later, I'm back in a fresh bed, courtesy of my sweetest friend.

She forces a bowl of chicken broth onto me and I'm starting to feel almost human again.

Bunny settles herself next to me on the bed with her back resting on the headboard and her hands on her belly. The bulge is small but it's more visible than last month.

"So, you fell in love and had to send her away?" I close my eyes in acquiescence. I've learned my lesson, I know better than to nod.

"Wanna talk about it?" she asks.

"Not really," I say. Bunny has my trust, but there are things I can't tell her. Also I'm not absolutely certain I understood all that went down after Kristal turned herself in.

There was a riot in the jail and her father and his accomplice were part of the casualties. There's an upside to that. Now the contract on Kristal's head has lapsed.

Bunny rests her head on my shoulder.

"I'm taking advantage of the situation while she's away. I know in a few months, I won't be able to barge in on you like this anymore."

"You know you'll always be welcome in my home, Bunny."

She laughs. "I would check with Kristal first. I'm not sure she'll see it this way. I saw the way she was looking at me the day you arrested her and you guys were not an item yet."

I smile remembering that day.

Was it only a few weeks ago?

Bunny squeezes my arms and looks into my empty bowl. Taking on a strange accent, she says, "Young man, I see a lot of showers in your future."

"Oh, really? You can tell the future by looking at tea leaves
and
chicken broth cups?"

Bunny nods and tries to keep a straight face as she says, "Yes, very cold showers."

She can hardly hold back her giggles when she adds, "Too bad they don't allow conjugal visits in Florida prisons."

I laugh at her silly joke and get her message loud and clear.

Kristal and I are going to be all right.

What we need is patience ... and a lot of cold water.
