“The planet we have found is too far out for us to adequately protect. So what choice do we have? Earth is in its death throes; we take what we need, and leave it to its end.”

“There is another way.” The Hier Commander spoke, stepping forward, making sure they all listened.

“Then let me hear it.” The Hier Ruler stared at the Hier Commander, who was struggling to stop his colours showing across his hands.

“We use the defence system in a negative way.”

“Explain.”

“Instead of protecting us, we deploy it around the Hrokili’s home planet.”

The Hier Ruler’s eyes narrowed, and now his colours did appear, like a tic under his eye. “You mean set the defence grid to not let any Hrokili ships out?”

“Yes. We take the fight to them, and then trap them there. If we can seal the sector too, that would be more beneficial.”

“You mean destroy the wormholes?”

“Possibly.”

The Hier Ruler walked back to the window, his brows creased, while the rest of the Council erupted into talk.

Garth was stunned that they could come up with such a plan, but it was perfect.

“Very well. Test the outcome. If we can seal them into their planet, then that is what we will do.”

He walked out of the chamber, and the others followed, all but Okil, Ishk, and the Hier Commander. Garth stood still, not knowing what to do, until Okil called him over.

“The warriors will be required to serve one more term. One more mission into deep space. We know you have only just returned, but you will be needed, Garth.”

“I understand.” But he doubted Tamzin would. They had only been back for three days, and she longed to go to his home in the mountains, but instead they had been told to stay in his small rooms in the breeding house.

“Let’s see if we can recall the last mission to leave, they have been gone one week. It is not safe for them out there alone,” the Hier Commander said to Okil.

“We may be able to send a message from the beacon,” Garth said.

“Good. Okil, see what you can do.”

“Of course. I’ll go now,” Okil said, and Garth took this as an opportunity to leave, wanting to go to Tamzin, who he knew would be waiting impatiently.

“Did you know that was what would be proposed?” he asked Okil as they left the tower and headed to the cruiser.

“We had to do something. But it could not come from the Hier Ruler.” Okil drove, the journey to the breeding house short.

“But he knew, before.”

“There is no more I can say, Garth. Go and tell Tamzin you only have a couple of days’ leave, and then we go and finish this. We need the humans to have a colony, there is a suitable planet, and I am damn well going to do my best to make sure the Hrokili are stopped.”

Garth nodded. “I understand. And so will Tamzin.” He hoped.

When he got to his room, she was cooking dinner. She had insisted he allow her to do something, or else she would go insane.

“You are back, and dinner is ready,” she said, placing a pan of something delicious down on the stove, and reaching for plates. “Did it go well?”

“Yes.” He didn’t know how to say in what
way
it went well. “The Karal will help Earth set up a colony on the planet Lilith.”

“They will!”

“Yes.”

“And the Hrokili? What do they propose to do about them?”

“Seal them in. Deploy the defence grid, but not around Karal, around the Hrokili’s home planet.”

“That is a sneaky idea.” She looked at him, studying his face, and his colours skimmed across his cheek. “But…”

“I have to go back. All the warriors will be expected to go.”

She paused and her eyes misted, but then she continued. “I understand. Just stay safe.”

He put his arm around her, pulling her close. “I will, Tamzin. And do not worry, I will succeed, and Earth will have hope.”

“I love you, Garth.” She wrapped her arms around his neck, all thoughts of dinner gone as she kissed him.

“And I love you too, Tamzin. And our child. That is why I am doing this, so that he can roam the universe, and never have to fear who is out there.”

Nodding, she pulled away and dished up his meal. “No one should have to fear being hunted and enslaved.” She fixed him with a stare. “And that is what I will teach our child.”

“Yes, those days are over for the Karal. All thanks to you and the other females from Earth.”

“Then it is all worthwhile. Now sit down and eat before it gets cold.”

He did as she asked, and neither of them spoke of what was to come. It would wait for another day … and another mission into deep space.
