“Evangeline, I need you to calm down.” She started for my IV.
“Where am I?”
“You’re in the hospital. Are you in any pain
?”
“How did I get here?”
“The ambulance brought you, now I need to know your pain level on a scale of one to ten.”
“I guess an 8.”
She started putting stuff through my IV. “What is that?” I asked her.
“It’s just some pain medicine. No need to worry, get some rest.”
“Is my baby okay?” I asked her as I hugged my stomach even tighter.
“The doctor will be in to speak with you in a little while.” She said ignoring my question and walking out.
Tears threatened to spill down my face. How could they not tell me what was going on? I had to know what was happening. I went to press the call button so the nurse would come in and explain thing but just as a grabbed it a man in a white coat came in and trailing behind him was Allen.
“Mrs. Wright how are you feeling?” the man in the white coat asked. “I’m Doctor Carter and I’ll be looking after you while you’re here.”
“Nice to meet you Dr. Carter, I’m just kind of confused as to what is going on. I need to know if my baby is okay.”
I looked at Allen and pleaded for him to give me a clue as to what happened. He was looking past me with a blank stare. He was hiding his emotions from me and for some reason it made me so angry.
“Well Mrs. Wright you have been through quite a bit and I want to take things a little slow and maybe you can help tell us what happened.”
“I honestly don’t remember right now. Everything is so jumbled together.” I was starting to get so frustrated that everyone was avoiding the one thing I wanted to know.
“It looks like you took quite the beating Mrs. Wright.” He turned towards Allen “This young man called the ambulance for you.”
I looked back at Allen confused and he showed the first sign of emotion in his eyes and it was fear. I shook my head from side to side and looked at Doctor Carter with tears in my eyes “Please just tell me if my baby is okay.”
“I’m sorry Mrs. Wright but there is no longer a heartbeat.”
I felt all the air in my lungs leave my body. The tears started to pour down my face.
“No, this can’t be.” I pleaded with the doctor. “Please.” I looked at him begging for something I knew he couldn’t change.
“Your body suffered too much trauma. I’m so sorry Mrs. Wright.”
I looked at Allen and I saw tears in his eyes. He asked the doctor to give us a minute and as soon as Doctor Carter left Allen rushed to my side.
“I’m so sorry
, baby.” He said as he cradled my head in his hands. I was in shock and I just stared at him shaking my head no.
“How did this happen?” I finally managed to ask him.
“He beat you Eve!” he stood up straight and started to pace the floor. “You told me you had to work and that I could pick you up at midnight. I didn’t want you to face him alone. I went to pick you up and you weren’t there. I drove straight to your house and found you unconscious on the floor.”
As he told me this I started to remember everything. “I was going to work
.” I explained to Allen. “They said they didn’t need me. I went home and he was there. He knew I was gone all weekend. He found my money. I have never seen him so mad.” I started to bawl.
“Eve, they’re going to bring police in here and you have to tell them everything.”
I just stared at my hands as they rested in my lap. I couldn’t wrap my head around everything that was happening.
“I think you need to rest
, Evangeline.” Allen said as he pushed my hair back from my eyes.
“Please don’t leave me” I begged him.
“I’m not going anywhere.” He started to fix my pillows and lay me back in the bed. He pulled a chair up and sat down next to me. He started to hold my hand and as my eyes started to close I swore I heard him whisper “I love you.”
“Mrs. Wright I brought you some breakfast,” was the first thing I hear when I woke up. My nurse set down a food try on my mobile table. I managed to get a hoarse whispered “thank you” out before she left. I turned to see Allen asleep in a chair next to my bed. He must have stayed here all night I thought to myself. For some reason this brought tears to my eyes. After all the bad that has been following
me this man somehow wiggled his way into my life. He started to stretch and yawn and when he finally opened his eyes he smiled at me.
“Good morning
, beautiful” he said. He got up and kissed me on the forehead. “How are you feeling this morning?”
“I’m not sure.” I couldn’t talk about my feelings yet. Everything was still so jumbled. My body and face are broken, my baby is dead, my husband did these two things, and I might love this man in front of me. It was just all too much to take in. Allen Moved my breakfast closer to me.
“You need to be sure you eat.”
“I know
, I’ll eat in minute.” I heard his stomach growl. “Sounds like you need to take your own advice and go get some breakfast.”
“I don’t want to leave you here alone” he looked at me with a worried expression on his face.
“I’ll be fine, plus I’m sure it won’t take you too long.”
“Do you want anything from the cafeteria?” he asked as he was putting his shoes on.
“No, just you to hurry back.” I smiled at him.
“If that is the case then I’ll just stay here.”
“No, go get you some food!” I begged him. I hated him being inconvenienced by me.
“Alright, al
right.” I’ll be right back. He kissed me on the lips then he was gone.
I needed a minute to clear my head with no distractions. As I sat trying to understand everything I heard my door opening again “you couldn’t have eaten that fast” I started to say as I looked up. But it wasn’t Allen that was standing in my door. It was Lee.
“I need you to leave” I said forcefully, sounding stronger than I felt. “You’re not welcome in here.”
“I’m welcome wherever you are, you’re my wife and no one will deny me seeing you.”
He closed the door behind him and walked closer to my bed. He smelled of cheap liquor, his clothes were stained, and he was slurring some of his words. I felt fear strike through my body, and then anger. This man took my baby from me and that will be last thing he ever takes from me.
“I said you need to leave Lee.” I said more demanding.
“Bitch, you think you’re running this show? I can tell you right now that you’re wrong.”
By this point I was shaking from so much anger. Why wouldn’t he just leave me alone? “Do you have any idea what you have done?” I started to yell. “You killed our baby!” tears started streaming down my face as I felt the emptiness from the loss I have suffered. “I was pregnant Lee and you took that away from me. I don’t ever want to see you again. I want you to leave, I want a divorce,
I want you to hurt Lee. You are nothing but a murderer in my eyes!”
Lee took two large steps to my bedside. That’s all it took for him to be able to reach me
. “You lying bitch!” he pulled me really close to his face “All this proves is how much of a whore you really are. You need to get dressed because we’re leaving.”
“I’m not going anywhere with you! We’re done!”
“I don’t think so, sweet-heart.”
“What are you
gonna do Lee? Hurt me?” I stared at him directly in the eyes. “There is nothing you can do to me that you haven’t already done. So go ahead, hurt me.”
Lee grabbed my arm and started to pull me out of the hospital bed. “Get dressed! I’m done with your games, we’re leaving, NOW!”
“She isn’t going anywhere with you!” I heard Allen’s deep voice chime in. I didn’t even hear the door open. But there he was, saving my life again. I looked at him with fear in my eyes and stepping up behind him were two police officers.
Chapter Nineteen
Eve was being released from the hospital today and I wanted everything to be perfect. She has been in the hospital for two weeks now and it’s been the longest two weeks of my life. I still don’t know why I had fallen for this woman but she was consuming my every being. I loved her and that was that. Tonight I was going to tell her. I’ve had the whole house furnished and everything livable just for her. I was going to pick her up in a couple hours and I’m feeling nervous as hell. Checking over everything one last time, making sure it’s perfect. I wanted her to feel at home, I wanted her to stay and live here with me. I was going to make her my wife. I put down the little velvet box that had very nice sized diamond ring it, on top of the brand new saddle I bought her. Evangeline was my life now and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Epilogue
I never thought life would be this good. I had everything I could ever dream of, a wonderful husband, a son, and another little one on the way. Allen was the perfect match for me. He was an amazing father and a very attentive husband. Don’t get me wrong, we have had our arguments but what married couple doesn’t. I still remember Allen proposing to me. He picked me up from the hospital and took me to his new house. And this time it was full of beautiful leather furniture and rustic decor. It looked like something out of a magazine. I walked out to the back porch to see the horses and there was the most beautiful saddle I had ever seen. Allen walked up behind wrapping his arms around my waist “do you want to ride with me?” I turned around in his arms.
“You mean this saddle is mine?” I asked him full of excitement. He shook his head yes. I turned back around and ran my hands against the smooth leather. As I looked over the saddle more I noticed a little box next to it. I picked it up and turned to Allen to ask him about it. He was on
one knee smiling at me. He grabbed the box and opened it. I saw the most exquisite piece of jewelry I had ever seen. As he grabbed my hand he asked me the one question I wanted to hear.
“Will you marry me Eve?” He asked in a low gravelly tone.
I just started bawling. I couldn’t believe this. As I shook my head yes he slipped the ring onto my finger. And that was that.
It took six months for my divorce to go through since Lee refused to sign at first and then six months after that, I was married to Allen. It was a beautiful simple wedding with his family and my friends from the diner. Small and intimate, just what I wanted.
A month after the wedding I was pregnant with our first baby. I will never forget the happy, surprised look on Allen’s face when I told him we were pregnant or the look of love when he held our son in his arms for the first time. Noah was a precious little boy, very curious and loved to get into everything. Cops and robbers was his favorite game and Allen and Noah played often.
We’re hoping for a little girl but it’s too soon to tell. We will love him or her either way though. I never thought life could be this wonderful but here I am living a dream.
