January 28, 1986

Kat, sorry I took so long in finishing this letter, but I was waiting for the stamps. Thank your for sending them. I really appreciate them.

I watched the “Miss Teen USA” pajent [
sic
]. Was very nicely done. (from start to finish).

Well, today Paul came up. It was really nice too. Had a beautiful visit with him. We talked abut everything, Kat. It seems, I have been away for so long.

When you say, “computer problems”?—What do you mean? What type of computer is it?

Now, to answer your questions.

1. Young women should go out in 2–4 girl groups. Never go out alone, cause that is asking for trouble. I don’t care where it is, that is trouble for one girl.

2. It’s what a girl wears, and carry’s
[sic]
herself, that “makes a girl an easy victim.” If she wears clothes that are tight, revealing, etc., and the way she carries herself—like, the way she talks, walks, etc.

3. As for the theory “ask for it.” I feel the same way the women’s groups feel. They are 100 percent right.

Now, as for what I say at the end of my letters “be careful.” Well, it’s like this—I happen to care about you. It may sound funny but it is true. I know, you have a job to do (plus, writing the book), but, that’s not it. I like you
as a very good friend. It’s something like Paul and I but different Kathy. I hope you can see where, and what, I am saying. Hopefully, this hasn’t put a different light on anything. I don’t want to cause any problems. If I were out, you would be the young lady I would like to be with. You strike me as the “old fashion type.” That’s what I like Kat. We could have plenty of fun together. But, you probably have a boyfriend. So I will just be a business oriented person to you. Please give me your opinion, on what I just said. I would appreciate it very much, Kat.

Well, I want to get this in the mail tonight to you. Glad to hear you got home safe.

I’ll write later to you.

February 2, 1986

Dear Kathy,

You have probably received the four pictures by now. The last three will be in this letter. Please make any comments on the pictures you like. I have had comments before, about my pictures, so I’m ready for one more comment. It won’t bother me at all. I take most of them in stride.

Paul gave me a nice compliment. Said I looked good for being incarcerated for that long. I really enjoyed seeing him that day. He also brought up a question about the day I go to the chair. Wanted to know if my parents were coming. I told him no. I can’t have him see me go out like that. Then he asked me if I wanted you there. I said, No cause you’re a young lady and I don’t want you to see me like that. Just remember me from our visits we have had. I told Paul to go see my parents the day it happens. Kathy—please don’t ask to come up that day. I just want to go out by myself. It will be easier for me to take. They usually ask if you want to have a last media (tv) interview. I am going to refuse it. They would love to have a party with me at that time. But I won’t give them the chance. If I see anyone, it will be you only. No one else.

By the way, when I am down on “death watch” I get to use a phone every week. But I would need your home number. Maybe it is up to you though Kat.

Also, I hope I haven’t embarrassed you in my last letter. You did ask for an explanation of that one sentence. So I told you exactly what I feel and think.

Kat, what I want to know is, how are you going to get across to the public the way Paul and I communicate? People won’t believe everything they read. You know that, and so do I.

Have you seen the house my parents have in Ormond Beach? It is a beautiful home. If you get a chance—drive by it. Then, you’ll see what I’m talking about—the way I used to live.

I am getting a little nervous now, cause of March 20, 1986

February 26, 1986

Dear Kathy,

Forgive me for not writing earlier. I sprained my finger playing volleyball, it is fine now.

Thank you for letting me call when I go to Death Watch.

It would be a good idea to purchase a personal computer. They are easy to operate too. When you purchase one, get it with multi-storage and multi-program capability. That way, you can use it for more than just writing the book. Everything from balancing your check book, grocery items, etc.

As you know, they got Ted Bundy on Death Watch. Also, Roy Allen Harich (Volusia County.)

It is the first one for both of them. But it doesn’t look good for Ted Bundy, though. It will be the same way with me Kathy. The Governor wants both of us very badly before he leaves office.

Well, Guess I’ll let you go for now. If you think of any questions, feel free to ask them.

March 3, 1986

Kathy;

Thought I would take a few minutes to write to you.

I have just finished an afghan for my mother, and one for my attorney (Chris Quarles.)

Now, I am working on one for myself. It’s all orange, and looks beautiful so far. I am taking my time with it, cause I want it just so. You know how fussy I am about things. Besides, it helps me pass the time away.

I am waiting for a neurologist now, to examine me. He was appointed by my trial judge in Titusville. If it helps, I am all for it. Besides, they might find something that will help in future cases. Maybe, I can be the turning block for this.

Bet you have your work cut out for you, with all these notes, and stuff. It will probably take you quite a while to get everything together.

It seems that one of the maximum wings had a slight problem last week. They had to bring in “pepper gas” to quiet them down. “We” could hear the machine running, and wondered what was happening. You could hear a pin drop on my floor. Stayed like that for the whole day and night.

They’re changing things around so up here, it makes you wonder what to expect next.

Kathy, could you tell me what part you are going to put the pictures in?

They put my old radio station back on the air this morning. It’s WAPE 95.1-FM. They went to FM now and are using one of the old D.J.’s from the 60’s. The “grease man,” is up North somewhere working for a radio station. Sounds good, but I’m hooked on “I-100” D.B.

Well, I don’t want to keep you any longer. You are a very busy young lady. Drop me a line when you get a chance.

April 2, 1986

Dear Kathy,

Thank you for your letter today.

Yes, I am waiting on bended breath about my clemency answer.

It’s not easy sitting here now. Every time I hear the plane come in and take off, my heart stops. I know it’s just another part of Death Row, but it really shakes you up knowing the Gov is in control. I can handle it, but it’s my mother I’m worried about. It could put her back in the hospital, in intensive care this time. Also, Dad is working around people who talk all the time about me. But he doesn’t let it bother him any cause he would surely go off. Even my brother has it hard out there.

I’m sorry it took so long in writing to you, but I know you can understand my position here. If I hear anything, my parents would know first, then I would notify you and Paul next.

Sure, practically everyone wants to see me executed. But at least let the Doctors run some tests on me first. This is what we have asked for from the Gov.

Sounds like the place will be jumping on Friday night. I’ve heard them talking about it on I-100. That is my station I listen to. It must have been something to see Mr. Mister and Starship at the Bandshell. MTV had the right idea too. Doing it during Spring Break ’86. Plus all the free concerts there. When The Pointer Sisters play the following: “Neutron Dance,” “Jump” and “Automatic,” think of me skating around the rink and dancing too.

I will never remember Gerald Stano skating or dancing without thinking of Susan Basile and Cathy Scharf. It would only bring back a flood of awful memories.

You realize that is my type of music you are going to be listening to Friday night, Kathy. Please let me know how it is, and if the News-Journal takes any pictures—please it
is, and if the News-Journal takes any
pictures please pass them on to me.

Kathy, I would give anything to be there for that concert. Even if they put me in a straight jacket, shackles on my feet, and armed sheriffs on each side of me.

Please give me your phone number so I may call you when I go to Death Watch. You know it could be any day now. So I would appreciate it very much. Also, have Paul give me his number also.

As for the inmate that dropped dead—he had a heart attack. They waited 45 minutes before the ambulance got here, plus an officer was very nasty about calling for help for the inmate. If it was an officer there would have been a helicopter here in 5 minutes. As far as we go—they don’t care one way or another.

Well, how are things coming with the outline? Bet your up to your ears in notes, and files. But that is what it’s all about when you take on a project like this.

Kathy, please have Paul drop me a line. I know he has been very busy during Spring Break, but maybe he can take a few minutes to write to me.

You take care, and enjoy The Pointer Sisters. Don’t forget to tell me about the concert, and send me some pictures of it.
