Donté winked. “Anything for you Ma!”

Two hours later they were walking back to their cars when a vehicle roared in front of them almost running them over. Bryce screamed and Donté shot off a string of expletives.

The car stopped and Bernard jumped out. Her husband raced up to her and trailing behind him were their mothers and Vanessa. They all looked shell-shocked.

Mom?”

What the fuck Bryce! What the fuck!” Bernard shouted.

What are all you doing here?”

I told them to come; you need somebody to talk some sense into you.”

Wow! This is like an episode of
Cheaters
, just without the cameras,” Donté said laughing.

Bernard stepped to him. “What are you laughing about?”

Donté looked up at Bernard. “Listen here nigga, don’t get it twisted, just because I’m laughing, doesn’t mean that I’m finding this situation funny. If I were you, I’d pull back and get the fuck on,” he said scowling at Bernard. Bernard sized Donté up, even though he was shorter than him by a couple of inches, Bernard saw his muscles and knew that he wouldn’t be able to take him. Instead he focused on someone safer, someone he had a better chance of controlling. He turned to his wife.

I want you to come home with me.”

Why are you following me Bernard?” she asked instead of responding to his request.

Because I want you. You’re my wife.”

How did you find me?”

I stuck a tracking device on your car,” he said almost proudly.

Bryce’s mouth widened with shock. “You did what?”

Yeah, I did it,” he bragged. “I knew your every movement. I knew when you went to work and to the gym, even when you saw him.” He motioned toward Donté. “And I knew every time you two fucked.”

How did you—”

You’re a lazy liar,” Bernard said with a sneer. “And with the tracking device it was easy for me to double check everything. Like last week, when you said you were at the mall. I knew you weren’t. So your so called trips didn’t match up with the tracking device.”

Bryce’s mother’s shock wore off enough for her to stutter, “Why are you doing this Bryce? Bernard loves you.”

Bryce turned her gaze to her mother. “I’m sorry Mom,” she choked out, embarrassed that her mother had to see this.

Suddenly Bernard’s mother took control of the situation. “Come on here boy. We’ll talk about this when we get home. We don’t air our dirty laundry in public,” she hissed. A small crowd had formed around them; a couple of bystanders were boldly recording the scene with their phone.

I’m not leaving unless Bryce comes home with me!” Bernard said belligerently.

I’ll be home later,” she said softly.

Now!” Bernard screamed, then he started crying.

Oh God,” Bryce’s Mother muttered to Vanessa. “He told us that we were surprising Bryce with dinner. If I had known this was going to happen, I never would’ve come along. Why do you think he invited us all here?”

Vanessa shrugged, while she worriedly watched the scene unfold. “Probably to shame her or maybe like he said, he was hoping that you can talk some sense into her.”

How can I talk to her? I don’t know what’s going on,” Bryce’s mother said bewildered by it all.

I do. Let me see if I can get him to leave.” She patted her arm, then marched over to Bernard. “Hey Bernard, let’s go home.”

No! Not until she comes with me.” He pulled off his glasses and knuckled his eyes.

Punk ass,” Donté mumbled, but loud enough for Bernard to hear.

I’ll come right home, just leave,” Bryce begged.

You’re coming home?” Bernard confirmed. His tears had subsided to sniffling.

Yes Bernard.”

Vanessa saw an opportunity and she took it. She grabbed Bernard’s hand and tugged him toward the car. “Come on, let’s go. She’s coming home,” she said soothingly.

Vanessa finally got everybody in Bernard’s car and they drove off.

Oh this shit explains everything. Now I see why you fuck around with me, you got a pussy for a husband,” Donté said with a smirk.

Bryce glared at him. “Shut up, just shut the fuck up.”

Chapter 7

Bryce wanted to surprise Donté with dinner. She knew that he worked hard and rarely had the time to eat healthy. Bryce sauntered into the strip club, carrying some takeout from a soul food restaurant. There was a heaping order of macaroni and cheese, barbeque ribs, potato salad, greens and a big hunk of corn bread.

He had texted her a few hours ago telling her that he was working. Since it was a Tuesday night the club was half filled. “He’s probably not going to make a lot of money tonight,” she muttered to herself. But it was all subjective, even on a slow night he made more on one night than most people would in a week.

After Bernard had caught her and Donté, she had promised Bernard that she wasn’t going to see him anymore and that she’d go to counseling with him. She did keep one of her promises; they had a counseling session scheduled. “This will be the last time,” she promised herself.

She walked to his dressing room. Since he was one of the stars of the show, he had his own; the others had to be satisfied with sharing one huge space. One time when they had to meet, he had her wait for him in his dressing room, where she got a peek at his various costumes. They were the stereotypical ones, but the customers didn’t care, eventually they came off and showed off his sugah cheeks.

She stopped outside his door, and a Kanye West song seeped around the door. Bryce knocked softly then pushed the door open.

So shocked by what she was seeing she couldn’t move. Donté was sitting naked on his couch, his legs splayed open and a man kneeling between his legs sucking his dick.

Donté!”

Donté’s eyes fluttered open and he smiled lazily at her. “Hey girl.”

The man stopped sucking, long enough to ask, “So Dara finally showed up.” He turned around and Bryce gasped.

What the hell?” It was White Chocolate. “I thought you didn’t like men?” she blurted out for the lack of anything else to say.

Donté shrugged. “Hey, when I’m horny, a mouth is just a mouth,” he drawled.

Bryce threw the bag of food at the pair. “You’re a fucking prick. This whole place is sick.” She spun on her heels.

Look around,” Donté shouted.

Bryce stopped then turned around. “What?”

Look around bitch, you’re in the place, so doesn’t that make
you
sick as well?”

Fuck you!” She stormed out of his room.

Are you going to call him?” Vanessa asked.

Why?”

For closure, maybe an explanation. If it happened to me I would like to know why he did it. And an apology would be nice.”

Bryce snorted. “That’s asking too much. What did I expect from someone like him? I should’ve known better, but he was so hot.”

How many times did he call you?”

None.” He was just something for her to fool around with and to staunch her sexual desire.

Do you regret it?”

Bryce was silent for a minute. “I regret getting married. I never should’ve done it, especially since I wasn’t in love with him. So yeah, all this could’ve been avoided. I was trying to make everybody happy and sometimes that’s not possible. This whole thing was an eye opener. I was hanging onto crazy, but I let it go.”

Amen,” Vanessa chimed in.

I wish that I could’ve combined Donté’s sexual prowess with Bernard’s sensitivity and brains to make one man. He’ll be the perfect guy for me.”

Vanessa laughed. “That made up man would be the perfect person for a lot of women. You won’t be able to corral him. So now with Donté out of the picture are you going to focus more on your marriage?”

I don’t know,” she answered honestly. “Fooling around with Donté gave me the best distraction from my marriage. With him around I didn’t have to look at it, now with him gone…”

Bernard isn’t that bad. You did marry him for better or for worse,” her friend gently reminded her.

I tried, but it’s not working.”

Really Bryce, it’s only been three months. I don’t think you’re trying very hard,” she chastised. “And you haven’t been going to counseling.”

Bryce looked at her sharply. “How do you know that?”

Vanessa took a sip of her drink before answering. “Because if you were you would’ve mentioned it, but you didn’t.”

Oh, yeah,” she said, but something about her friend’s statement bothered her and throughout lunch she kept trying to figure out what it was.

Chapter 8

Bryce yawned as she made her way home. The flight from Dallas was uneventful. She had taken a tour of the new state-of-the-art call center. The company had spared no expense. The work stations were ergonomically designed to provide the utmost comfort to the employees. The new phone system was one of the best in the world. And in the three days that she was there, she had interviewed for a supervisor and some team leaders. All in all it was a productive trip, so much so, that she was able to cut it short by a day. After a quick call to her assistant, she got her booked on an eight o’clock flight back to Atlanta.

Bryce wondered if Bernard would be home. Even though they had been married for only eight months, still newlyweds, they hadn’t been spending any time together. On Christmas there was a loveless exchange of gifts. With her promotion and his job, they saw each other only about twice a week. On Valentine’s Day he sent her the obligatory bouquet of roses, but they didn’t do anything special to celebrate the day. Their sex life was dismal, if they sexed once a month, Bryce was surprised.

She pulled her car into the garage, and then strolled into the kitchen. She immediately noticed the sink full of dishes and the pots and pans on the stove. “So Bernie’s been cooking,” she muttered to herself, and then she abruptly stopped. Bryce cocked her head, she heard music. She followed the sound to the dining room where she saw two plates with just crumbs and two wine glasses on the table. Her hands were beginning to get clammy and her stomach was churning. “What the hell,” she mumbled.

She marched into the living room, where a chocolate cake sat in the middle of the coffee table; a big wedge was missing from it. Next to it were two dessert plates, smeared with traces of chocolate. She absent-mindedly noticed a pair of pumps in front of the couch.

Bryce swayed slightly, and then forced herself to tiptoe up the stairs to her and Bernard’s bedroom. As soon as she got to the top of the stairs, she saw that the bedroom door was open; she walked cautiously down the corridor. Bryce stopped at the master suite; the hallway light was on, spotlighting the activity.

She saw her husband fucking another lady, he was making sounds that he never did with her and he was showing a passion that he never showered on her. Bryce stood there and watched him, dazed, it wasn’t like she was watching her husband, this person was a total stranger to her. With his moves and enthusiasm he had a porn star like quality. So fascinated with her husband’s performance that she wasn’t thinking about his lover.

She raised her hand to knock on the door when Bernard shifted and she saw his partner…Vanessa and Bryce slumped against the doorjamb. Vanessa caught the movement and she froze. Bernard continued to pump, when he realized that she wasn’t moving he stopped and looked down at her.

Oh no, am I hurting you?”

Vanessa shook her head. “Bryce,” she uttered.

Bernard sighed. “It’s okay. Don’t worry about her, she’ll be home tomorrow.” He kissed her forehead. “Let’s finish.”

Vanessa struggled underneath him, trying to push him off. “Bryce is here. She’s standing at the door.”

What?” Bernard whipped his head around so fast, that it was a surprise he didn’t get self-inflicted whiplash.

What’s going on?” Bryce demanded.

Bernard jumped out of bed. “I’m sorry, Bryce. We didn’t mean for this to happen.”

Bryce turned her gaze on her best friend. “Vanessa?”

I’m sorry Bryce.”

Why Vanessa?” Vanessa sat up in bed, clutching the blankets to her chest. “He’s a good man Bryce.”

I’ll give y’all five minutes to get dressed. I’ll be downstairs.” The enormity of the situation didn’t hit her until she was downstairs. Her hands began shaking and she suddenly felt lightheaded. She dropped onto the couch and clasped her hands together, then placed them between her legs. Ten minutes later her husband and best friend came down the stairs holding hands.

She saw how attractive he had gotten. His glasses were gone and were replaced with contact lenses. His wardrobe had been updated and he walked with a new confidence that she hadn’t noticed before.
How did I not see this happening?
