Oh my god, Ally. What have you done?

He dropped everything and ran to their room. He was there in a second and confirmed his worst fears…She was not there.

He ran back upstairs and pounded on Damian and Adele’s door. “Guys!” he yelled, the panic and pain in his voice obvious. “Ally’s gone.”

The door flew open and two terrified immortals stood in the doorway.

“Where is she?” Adele cried. “What happened?”

“I don’t know what happened, but I know where she is,” James replied. “We have to leave now! I’ll grab Chase on the way down.”

Adele and Damian were already changed and waiting downstairs by the time he knocked on Chase’s door, only to find no answer. His mind turned suspicious and he had an awful feeling that wherever Ally was, Chase was with her too. He opened the door and confirmed his fears.

I’ll kill him
.

He sent the information to Adele and Damian telepathically. He didn’t have time to stand around talking, they needed to move. Something bad was happening…

The three immortals were a blur as they made their way to the meadow… But would they make it in time?

Tristan had Chase in a tight spot, but he also knew that Ally wouldn’t be hurt by a fireball. Granted no one had tested the theory when she was unconscious, but it should still work.

Chase smirked at him and shot back, “Think again.” The fireball was thrown with dead accuracy and Tristan was too stunned to move for a split second, then rolled and pulled something shiny out of his boot. Chase had lost focus for a mere second thinking he had won the battle, Tristan took aim and threw the dagger at his chest, narrowly missing the heart. He laid there, surprised and in agony, but he still tried to reach Ally. He didn’t care if he died, but he cared if she did.

Tristan came over and pulled out the knife. “Sorry, Chase, but you left me no other choice. Turns out you aren’t just an insignificant Callaghan after all.”

“Go to hell!” he roared.

“That’s actually where I’m headed. I’ll tell Vincent you said hi.”

Chase took his last remaining strength to try and reach James.
“In the clearing…Tristan has Ally… Going to Vincent…Old mines…”

“Chase!”
The voice was faint in his mind, but it was James.
“We’re coming. Hold on!”

Chase felt the relief surging through him, James was on his way and he had used his last breath to save Ally. He could die in peace now…

Chapter Thirty-three

James ran into the clearing with Adele and Damian close behind him. They saw Chase lying in a pool of blood, not moving. James was the first one by his side. He knelt down beside him and checked for a pulse. It was faint, but it was there.

The blood from the chest wound was slowly pulsating out of him. Adele and Damian came up behind him and Adele whimpered at the sight. She was very fond of Chase and it broke her heart to see him like this. She jumped onto the other side of James and took Chase’s hand in hers. She looked at James with sadness in her eyes. “Is he still alive?”

His face was severe with worry as he answered, “Yes, but only just. He needs medical attention right away or he will die.”

“I don’t understand what happened?” Adele said as she got up and walked back to Damian’s side. Damian put his arm around her and held her tight.

“I don’t either,” James replied running a hand through his hair. “All I know is what Chase told just before he passed out. So I’m going to the mines.”

“James, I agree that you need to go but you can’t go in there alone,” Damian said. “We need a plan or we could end up getting Ally killed if we storm into the place.”

“What do you think she is doing there anyway?” James fumed. “They didn’t invite her around for a tea party, Damian! We have to move or it will be too late!”

Adele stepped away from Damian and looked at James, her eyes telling the heartbreak and fear she felt. “He’s right, Damian.” She turned to look at her soulmate. “We have to go now!”

Damian still didn’t agree, but knew that he would do the same thing in James’ shoes.

“I need one of you to take Chase back to the manor and one of you to come with me. I don’t care who does what but make your decision now.”

Adele and Damian both spoke at the same time. “I’m coming with you.”

James sighed in frustration.

Adele turned to Damian. “She’s my granddaughter I have to go after her. Please understand that.” Her pleading eyes begged his cooperation.

“I do, but I don’t think it’s right to send a woman into danger when I could go.”

“Oh, Damian,” she said with a loving look. “I’ll be alright. I know how to take care of myself. Take Chase back to the manor, get him fixed up then send Isabella and Caleb to the old mines.”

Damian nodded and looked at James. “Take care of my girl, James.”

“With my life, brother,” James replied.

With that sorted, Adele kissed Damian goodbye and the two ran in the direction of the mines. Damian picked Chase up and ran all the way back to manor. His life was hanging in the balance and he wouldn’t let him die if he could help it.

Chapter Thirty-four

Tristan entered the mines carrying the unconscious prophecy girl. He went straight to the dark, bleak room that Vincent was usually found in and kicked the door wide open with his foot.

“Here she is,” the vampire announced.

Vincent stood up and was in front of him before he could blink. His eyes shone with wickedness and evil deeds. He watched her and ran his long finger nailed hands over her face. He finally looked up at Tristan and said, “Well done, my boy.”

“Where’s Kathryn?” Tristan asked. “You’ll get Alessandra once I have her.”

“Of course, of course,” he said with a smile that was far too friendly to be genuine. “Natalia get Kathryn, would you?” Vincent waved his arm towards her without looking at her.

Natalia didn’t like being ordered about with such little care, but regardless she slipped out the door behind Tristan.

He watched Vincent carefully. He hadn’t actually expected things to be this easy or to go according to plan.

Natalia was back with Kat in tow in only a matter of minutes.

“Come here, my pet,” Vincent cooed to Kat. “Look what I’ve brought you.”

Kat looked at the girl Tristan held tightly in his arms. “Ally!” she whispered. Her mouth began to water at the smell of human blood. She advanced forward, following her instincts, but Tristan caught her eye and a sharp warning rang in her mind.
“Remember who you are, Kathryn. She’s your best friend. Find your humanity and hold onto it.”

She stopped moving and slowly retreated back to her master.

Vincent looked at her strangely, then a cold, calculating idea formed in his mind. He began to walk around the room, pretending to be thinking things over, when he already knew exactly what he was about to do. He would not hand Kat over to that little upstart. Tristan was a fool to think he ever would. “Natalia,” he said casually. “It’s time to take out the trash.”

Natalia smiled devilishly and sprang at Tristan. He had to drop Ally so she wouldn’t be hurt in the fight that would ensue. Kat stood on the sidelines watching, she wanted to help but didn’t know how. Tristan and Natalia were engaged in a battle to the death until she pulled a knife on him and history repeated, only this time Tristan was on the receiving end. He felt the blade pierce his stomach and heard Kathryn scream in horror. He knew that he had to do something or he would be dead, but more importantly, he’d failed in his plan. Kathryn was not going to be set free and he had never intended on leaving Ally here. He was not going to leave this place without both of them. But as fate would have it, it seemed he was leaving here with neither of them.

He felt himself being picked up and tossed out onto the cold, wet snow that had begun falling an hour earlier. He tried to stay conscious, but the darkness was calling him. Tristan thought of Kat and found the will and strength to carry on. He may not be in a position to fight them, but he could get to James and the others. They would be able to finish what he had started.

If they don’t kill me on sight, that is.

He slowly stood up and moved as fast as he could in his current condition. The bleeding had begun to slow, but he would need a transfusion when this was all over.

Tristan hadn’t been running long when he saw two flashes coming towards him. “James!” he called out. “Ally needs your help.”

Within seconds, two strong hands had him by the throat, his feet dangling in the air. “Where is she?” James roared.

“Vincent has her.” James dropped Tristan to the ground. “I never planned on handing her over, I swear.”

“You better tell me what the hell happened tonight, or I’ll finish what someone else started,” he said pointing to the knife wound.

Tristan sighed and began to tell the tale of how Ally had come be in the clutches of Vincent.

James got angrier by the second, whilst Adele was just heartsick.

“Why didn’t she tell me?” he roared. James had never been so angry or felt so betrayed, but more than anything he’d never felt so utterly terrified in all his three hundred years.

Adele spoke softly. “She had no choice, James. You weren’t there, remember? And we all would’ve said no anyway, then you would’ve locked her away somewhere.”

James turned on her. “And what’s the alternative?
This?
A week in a tower somewhere would probably do her good.”

James’ rage didn’t frighten Adele, she knew what immortal men were like and his soulmate’s life was in danger. “James, she wouldn’t be the girl you love if she had left her best friend in the hands of Vincent.”

James stared at her, but she could tell he agreed somewhere under the swirling emotions.

She continued on, “The important thing is that we know where she is and we need to get to her…Now!”

Chapter Thirty-five

Ally was still lying on the hard, stone floor that Tristan had dumped her on when Natalia attacked. The three vampires stood over her while Vincent thought of a fitting way to end her life. He never went for the easy kill, the dramatic in him wouldn’t be happy with that. It had to be a production. He looked at the girl again and back to his female counterparts when an idea struck.

He looked at Kat with a wicked gleam in his eyes. “Kathryn, my pet,” he started. “You want to be part of our family don’t you?”

“Of course,” she replied trying to sound sincere.

“Good. There’s something I need you to do in order to prove to me that you want this badly enough,” Vincent cooed to her.

“I’ll do anything, master.”

“Kill Alessandra!”

Kat felt sick to her stomach at the thought, but tried to keep the emotions from showing. “Yes, master.”

Vincent smiled like a Cheshire cat. “Follow me. Natalia, pick up Alessandra, would you?”

He led the two vampire girls outside into the snow laden lands a few miles from the mines. “Drop her there,” Vincent instructed Natalia as they reached a clearing. Natalia dropped her down like a discarded piece of rubbish and stepped back.

Kat waited to be instructed to kill her, and was desperately trying to think of a way that would make it look like she’d done it without actually doing it.

Biting is out of the question! What can I do? What can I do?

Vincent interrupted her thoughts, and she knew her time was up. She had to do something or both she and Ally would be dead…not just undead. “Kill her,” he ordered with such coldness she hadn’t thought possible, even from the creature standing beside her.

She looked at her friend, lying helplessly in the snow, and took a step towards her. She could feel the glee radiating out Vincent and Natalia behind her. Her skin crawled.

Kat knelt down beside Ally and leaned into her neck. It was actually painful to think about biting a human, but not being able to. She didn’t like the feeling but fought it nonetheless. Inspiration struck and she had a solid plan. She would make it look like she had bitten her. Dragging one hand close to Ally’s neck, she cocked her head slightly so that her long, red locks fell over Ally’s face covering what she was about to do.

Ally’s eyes began to flutter open at the very moment and all she saw was Kat ready to bite her. She was still too groggy to even put up a fight, but Kat whispered so softly that she couldn’t even be sure that she heard right, “I’m sorry, Ally. I don’t have a choice…but James will be here soon.”

Ally almost began to relax then she felt two teeth piercing her neck and she screamed out in pain. She began writhing trying to get away from Kat, but the strong vampire held her tight.

“I didn’t bite you,” Kat whispered. “I pierced you with my fingernails. Vincent is watching me…”

Ally heard the words but all she could register was pain and Vincent was there. She could feel the blood rushing out a rapid pace but there was nothing she could do to stop it.

Kat stood up and turned back to Vincent. “It is done. Let’s go.”

“Not quite,” he replied wickedly. “A final touch, perhaps, is what we need…”

He looked around and saw what he had been searching for. “Perfect,” he muttered and grabbed a red flower from the ground.

Kat looked on in horror. They all knew what the flower symbolised and Kat felt her skin crawl again. He placed the flower in between Ally’s almost lifeless hands and smirked with relish at the final curtain of his production.

Vincent turned to Kat again, and held out his arms. “You have pleased me, Kathryn. From this moment on you are one of us.”

“Thank you, master,” she replied bowing her head. It was a sign of reverence but all she felt was disgust for them both.

“Let us go,” Vincent said and started to walk back. They had almost reached the mines when Kat turned to Vincent and asked a favour. “Can I have a moment alone?”

Still gloating and focused on himself, he readily agreed. After all she had just killed Ally, what more assurance did he need? “Of course, my pet.” He cradled her cheek with hand and she fought the cringe his touch brought.
