“It can't be more difficult than staying away for so long. I was a fool, Eli.”
“I know you were, and don't think I won't remind you of that.” I smiled and waited for his response.
“God you haven't changed at all. I can just imagine what you'll be like at eighty. You won't let me get away with anything, will you?”
“You've got that right Mr soon-to-be-unemployed-CEO. I don't suppose you've learned to cook at all because I work long hours and I love my job.”
“I'll take a class. Right after I buy this dinky little company I have my eye on.”
Eight years later
“When are you going to do something about that pile of rocks in the back yard, Eli? It's been there since you moved in.” Quinn peered out the kitchen window to the back garden.
“It's not a pile of rocks. Those are the rocks for our rock garden.” A warm, sappy feeling bubbled inside me as I looked at the pile under the tree in the yard.
“But you never build it.”
“That's not true,” said Mike as he came up behind me and wrapped his arms around me. “We've moved one rock every spring.” He pointed to the back corner of the yard where seven rocks sat, carefully positioned exactly where we wanted them. “These things take time and I don't want to get it wrong.” He kissed the side of my face and whispered. “Never again.”
