Don listened.
Had Dwayne Carter turned up?

“I got an extraordinary call directly from an FSB contact. We have been called to assist on a terrorist attack that happened in Moscow.”

“I thought they had that all covered in the news report,” Don interrupted.

“Yes, they do but they do not have a single suspect or clue apart from these photos. Guess who showed up?”

Brenneman folded his paper, put it aside and took his phone out. He used his thumb print to unlock the screen and opened the picture folder. Then he handed it to Don.

“Your mystery man. The same face from the Dwayne Carter files.”

Don looked on in disbelief. First he was in Paris and now Moscow. He just made it to the most wanted list by both agencies. Whoever he is, he’s good.

“I am now leading the CIA efforts. We cannot let someone else get him first. I need to be updated on everything real time. Look through old files again, in case you missed something. Anything you need, you get. Has that reporter called your Blake Griffin number yet?”

Don said, “No. A team will be on him right away. I will get him. He made it personal when he killed my men in Paris.”

Brenneman stood up to go. “Good. Just remember, Don, the whole story does not revolve around you.”

Don sat on the bench watching Brenneman leave the park. No doubt his personal security guards were nearby.

The whole story does not revolve around you - Don pondered on that. What did he mean? What was he missing? The future was going to bring a new challenge. There was a lot of responsibility. How was he supposed to get the brute from Paris? The pressure was daunting but he was going to enjoy it.

Hallstatt, Austria

Antoine had yet to see a place as strangely situated as his grandmother’s birthplace. The houses seemed to sit on top of each other. Built on the sloping, narrow lakeshore like swallows’ nests, their reflection shone in the enamel green surface of the lake.

Antoine opened the green tinted postbox with a squeak.

A letter with no return address, from Lance’s Private Banking greeted him.

It read: “Welcome home Mr. Springer. The person, going under the name of Blake Griffin has been identified. Enclosed is his file. As usual, keep all information confidential. Please destroy this message and file after reading. Have a nice day. Bekkend. PS: I owe you a drink.”

Antoine had guessed right: The CIA.

Antoine read the papers and whispered, “Until next time.”

Vienna, Austria

The last light of day had long ago deserted the bright offices of level fifty-nine. It was quieter than usual. The busy computer consoles were abandoned, screens were shut down and no steps crossed the floor.

Rose had sent everyone home early today. They had earned some downtime.

For her, there was no other place to go. She belonged to the agency. An old saying came to her mind. When the blood in her veins returned to the sea and the earth in her bones to the ground, the agency would no longer belong to her.

The truth was, she belonged to the agency, just like Smith. Their lives served a higher purpose.

“You know how much I wish I could be there,” she said honestly what she felt. The speaker of her office phone was a warm touch against her cheek, a small comfort of being connected to her husband. “Your speech is very touching, and speaks well of him. I would add… Smith died in service for the SAS on a special mission.” They had to keep the existence of the UNI a secret as long as possible. Derek would stand in for her.

“I have some good news,” Rose said. “Remember the bomb where you lost your agents near Hatay? Well, the deaths may not have been in vain. My backdoor channel at the FSB confirmed that nuclear material was present in the Kremlin attack. The isotope number matches the missing bomb.”

“That is a relief,” Derek said. “Looks like you have really added tactical to your name.”

“What? United Nations Intelligence and Tactics? The UNIT?”
Rose said, considering it. “It does have a nice ring. But whatever we come up with, the enemy is prepared to bring more. We bring tactics, they bring cyber-attacks.”

“Yes, and it is unusually aggressive. Purposeful,” her husband said. “Speaking of hacks, the Chinese government denies the hacks.”

“And Tanya is in the wind again,” Rose said with a sigh.

“That hunt can wait for another day,” her husband answered. “I have a feeling she will be gone for a while. But you did stop her.”

Rose didn’t reply.

“Okay, my dear,” her husband said. “I’m off to the next briefing. We’ll speak again soon.”

Rose ended the call with, “Give my regards to Abbie for me. Jessica sends her greetings. Till tomorrow love, tomorrow.”
