She heard him suck in a sharp breath, his hands squeezing her ass through her shorts. Then his breath washed over her lips as he blew into her waiting mouth. She sucked him in, deep into her lungs, her chest expanding to accommodate as much of his essence as possible. When it felt as if her chest was going to explode, Missy released their mingled breaths, only to have him capture her mouth beneath his.

Missy moaned, threading her tongue into his hungry mouth between his lips. She felt his mouth curve up in a smile, then he thrust his tongue against hers, dueling.

Heavy breaths became groans. Hands slid over curves and muscle. Their teeth bumped against each other harshly, but it only added fuel to the building fire.

Missy’s nipples were so tight it was painful, and her panties were wet with the juices of her growing need for him. “Sam,” she said, almost breathless. “Please.”

“Shh.” He brushed a strand of hair back from her forehead. “Slow. We’ve got all night. And more.”

Missy sucked in a breath and took a step back. He was right. What was her hurry? This was something to savor, this time alone with only her and Sam. She took one more step back, straightened her spine, and tilted her chin up.

Sam smiled at her. “What are you up to?”

Her body still tingling from their brief encounter, Missy locked eyes with him. Taking the bottom edge of her sports bra in her hands, in one slow, smooth movement, she lifted it up over her head. Her full breasts, the nipples hard little pebbles, sprang free. Missy tossed the bra aside, noticing how quickly Sam’s eyes dropped to gaze at her chest.

She saw his Adam’s apple move up, then down his neck when he swallowed hard. “Are you sure about this?” he asked, his gaze meeting hers again.

It was Missy’s turn to swallow hard. She took a step toward him, resting her hands on his knees. “This is more than just having one-on-one sex, isn’t it?” Her insides were trembling and she was doing her best to hide it. She was nervous, and the only reason for it was because she had an inkling that her relationship with Sam was about to change. It was like a sense of something large hanging in the air, something life-changing.

Sam raised his hand to cup her cheek. His palm was warm against her skin. He ran his thumb over her cheek softly. “I don’t want you to be disappointed.”

“I don’t think you could disappoint me.” She wrapped her fingers around the wrist of his hand that was so lovingly cupping her cheek. “I don’t think you realize just how much I’ve wanted this. Sam, my attraction to you is more than physical. I feel a connection with you I’ve never felt with anyone before. I don’t know if it’s because we’ve become so close lately or if it’s because you are such an interesting man, but even if you don’t feel the same way, it doesn’t matter. I want to be even closer to you. I want our connection to go to the next level. I think if we begin to enjoy each other sexually, with tenderness, something will happen between us. I don’t know what, but I want to find out. How do you feel about this? You haven’t really said.”

Sam dropped his hand from her face and covered both of her hands that were resting on his knees with his own. “This is serious business. That’s what I think. I don’t want to ruin what we already have, but with you standing here in front of me looking so luscious, I can’t help myself from thinking how it will be when we finally connect sexually. I want you, Missy. I have for a long time. I didn’t know how to tell you. Whether this turns into something more or not, let’s let fate determine what happens. Us being together so much lately since Rachel has focused on Joe just may be a sign of something bigger. I’m not sure. I don’t want to commit to anything at this point, but I think you and I are close enough, and adult enough, to take this to the next level and not get hurt. Can we agree to that?” He raised one eyebrow. “Are we strong enough to not hurt each other?”

The closeness of him, the warmth emanating from his body, was pulling her toward him. She wanted to wrap herself in that heat, let it swirl around her to warm her heart. But what if after they experienced each other, her heart got the better of her and she fell in love with Sam? Would she be able to handle it if he didn’t feel the same way about her? Would she be hurt and heartbroken or could she be an adult about it and continue on with their relationship as it was? A tiny voice inside her head said,
If you don’t do this, you’ll regret it. Just enjoy yourself for once, let yourself just feel.

Missy drew in a long, slow breath and searched his clear blue eyes. There was a look of sincerity there that was telling. He cared whether or not their relationship changed. He didn’t want to ruin it, like he had said. But how could the two of them sharing the ultimate connection ruin anything? In Missy’s mind, it would only solidify their closeness. “If you’re strong enough, so am I,” she said finally. She moved in closer between his legs. “If you have any inclination that you don’t want to continue this, tell me, because right now, I want you so badly it almost hurts.” Her words were soft, but they had a definite effect on him.

His eyes seemed to grow darker, the blue becoming deeper like still water. He slid his hands around to her bare back, stroking her skin lightly. “God, I want you, too. Tell me though, is this the right time for us to make this connection?”

“What do you mean?” Missy wasn’t sure where he was going with this. Was he trying to find a way to back out? His body language told her he wasn’t but his words were a different story. “Don’t you want to do this?”

Sam let out a small laugh. “Oh yeah, I definitely want to do this, but I want to do it right. I don’t want our first time together to be a rushed roll in the hay, so to speak.” His right hand slid around to glide over her left breast, his palm grazing over her tight nipple.

Missy drew in a deep breath, sparks shooting from her nipple to her pussy, inciting it to cream. She caught her bottom lip between her teeth, afraid to breathe, afraid to move. She wanted more of his touch and didn’t want to do anything to make him take his hand away.

Sam leaned toward her, his eyes searching hers intently. “Don’t get me wrong, Missy. I think what you and I have together right now is so special that it can only get better. It’s just that I want to do things right. I’m not all that great at relationships and this is one I don’t want to mess up. I want our first time together to be perfect.” His fingers caught her nipple and rolled it, sending tendrils of heat through her body. “Having you standing in front of me like this is just about to drive me to the point of no return.” He pinched her nipple, causing her to draw in a sharp breath. “If we don’t decide what to do within the next few moments, I’m going to take you right here on this massage table, and there’ll be no turning back after that.”

Missy’s insides were quivering with the need for some sort of release. He was so close, his fingers doing such work on her breast, that all she wanted was to taste him. Or have him taste her. She arched her back, digging her fingers into his thighs as she pressed toward him. Her movement caused him to cup her breast, squeezing. She leaned closer, the tip of her nose almost touching Sam’s. “If you keep this up, I’m going to explode,” she whispered.

“I don’t want you exploding just yet,” he replied. Suddenly, he pulled her into him, covering her mouth with his.

Missy went limp, allowing him to take over with force. His hand, which was so expertly toying with her nipple, returned to her back, but this time, he used it to capture the back of her head to hold her in place while he devoured her mouth. Missy moaned, her breasts now sliding against the warmth of his naked chest, skin to skin, generating even more heat. She parted her lips, inviting him into her mouth. He didn’t waste time. When his tongue invaded the warm wetness of her mouth, she sucked it deeper, rolling her tongue around it in a dance of seduction.

It was Sam’s turn to moan. Missy remembered her hands, hanging so limply at her sides. She brought them up to cup his head and neck, scraping her nails over him. Pressing against him harder, she released his tongue. His breathing was labored, the sounds of their extremely hot kiss filling her ears. She nipped at his lower lip, groaning.

Sam chuckled and weaved his fingers into her hair, using it to pull her head back and away from him.

The movement was forceful and controlling. Missy loved it. She ran her tongue over her upper lip, her gaze locked on his. “What?” she managed to say.

“Missy, you are delicious.”

“Why did you stop?”

“If I didn’t, we wouldn’t be where I want us to be.”

“And where do you want us to be?” Missy didn’t quite understand what he was talking about.

He gave her a quick kiss on the lips. “My bed.”

Chapter Five

Missy could hardly contain her excitement. She’d never been in Sam’s private quarters before and, as far as she knew, no other woman had been either.

Once she had understood what Sam had been talking about when he said they weren’t where he wanted them to be, Missy had quickly slipped her sports bra back on while Sam pulled the robe he had worn to the spa over his shoulders. When she had turned around to face him, he had quickly put his hands in the pockets of the robe and grinned at her. Funny, he had looked like he had been caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

They had walked hand in hand toward the main house, both of them lost in their thoughts. Once they had reached the main house, Missy followed Sam toward his quarters in the depths of the building. Biting the inside of her lip, Missy wondered how he felt about being the caretaker of the place and not having his quarters nearer the main area of the house. He hadn’t minded that everyone called him Rodgers. He had told her that. Was he happy in his position? Truly happy? She shoved those thoughts from her mind. That subject was best left for some other time. Right now, all she wanted was to cement their relationship by getting as close as possible sexually.

Sam stopped in front of a large, wooden door. He reached for the doorknob and opened it wide. With a sweeping motion of his arm, he smiled. “Welcome to my humble abode.”

Missy wasn’t sure what to expect when she entered his suite of rooms. Stepping inside, her first impression was one of how masculine the room seemed. It was a living room, not large, but nicely furnished with a leather couch and side chair, dark wood tables and heavy drapes. It looked more like a man’s study than a living room. Though it was darker than most of the house, it felt inviting. She moved into the room, catching the scent of sandalwood. “This is very nice,” she said, turning back toward him.

Sam closed and locked the door. “Glad you like it. I, uh, don’t usually have visitors.”

Missy smiled at him, then walked around the room, touching his things lightly. “It’s very cozy.” She stopped with her hands resting on the back of the couch.

Sam came up behind her and wrapped his arms around her. “Cozy is how I want you to feel.”

She leaned her head back on his shoulder. “There’s many other things I’d like to feel with you.”

He nuzzled her neck. “I hope I live up to your standards.”

Her heart began to thud in her breast as he ran his tongue along her neck up to her ear. “Sam, I don’t think you have anything to worry about in that department.”

He chuckled and turned her around. “What do you say we retire to a more comfortable place?”

“Lead me to it.”

He took her hand and headed for a door along the back wall. When he opened the door, Missy gazed around this bedroom. It suited him. A heavy, four-poster, king-size bed dominated the room. The large round cannonball-shaped posts of the bed reminded her of something a mountain man would sleep in. The quilt on the bed looked handmade and well-used. She crossed the room to the bed and ran her hand over it. The material was soft beneath her palm.

She heard the door close behind her, and she turned. “This is nice,” she said quietly.

“The quilt was made by my grandmother.” He moved to the bed, placing one hand on a cannonball-topped post. “It’s the only thing I have of my family’s.”

Missy smiled and kept quiet. Both of them held secrets about their families, and now was not the time to discuss it. Not if they were going to continue what they had started back in the spa. “I’ll put it over there, if that’s okay.” She pointed toward a small wooden bench in the corner.

“Yes, that’s fine. Let me help you.” Sam moved to the other side of the bed.

Together, they folded the well-worn quilt and Missy placed it on the bench. When she turned back, Sam was lying beneath the white cotton sheets on the bed with his head propped on his hand and turned toward her. He patted the bed beside him and then threw the sheet back.

Missy grinned and stripped off her clothes. When she caught his gaze again, it was warm and sensual. She could almost feel his eyes on her skin and immediately her nipples peaked again.

“Come here,” Sam said, his voice low and commanding.

Missy did as she was told, sliding beneath the crisp cotton sheet. The material was cool against her skin and felt absolutely delicious. She rolled onto her side and faced him. “This is nice.” The setting sun glinted through a space between the heavy curtains at the window, bathing the room in a golden glow. It was dreamlike, and Missy couldn’t think of anywhere else she’d rather be right now.

“You’re still sure about this?” Sam looked her directly in the eye, his face serious.
