Mike glared at Dante. “Touch me again, asswipe, and I’ll kick your ass.”

Dante looked at me. “Just one?”

I shook my head. “Not now.”

Dante frowned, but didn’t say anything.

I cleared my throat, pulling Mike’s attention back to me. “Now as I was saying, Mike, I’m Krista’s new man, responsible for giving her the big cock and thorough fucking that she was sadly missing while with you.”

Mike roared like a wounded bear and charged towards me. I punched him between the eyes, sending him crashing to the floor. I shook my head as he looked up at me, blood spilling from his nose. “No, Mike. I’m not some helpless woman who has no choice but to put up with your shit so don’t act stupid or you’ll get hurt.” I smiled and shrugged. “Actually, you’re going to get hurt anyway so feel free to act as stupid as you want.”

“Do you know who I am, asshole?” Mike yelled. “I’m a fucking police detective and you’re in deep sheet.” He climbed to his feet, reached into his jacket, and pulled out his badge. “See that, fucker? You’re fucked.”

“Let me see?” I said, holding out my hand. He slapped the badge into my palm. I looked at it, spit on it, and dropped it. As Mike stared at his shiny symbol of manhood laying on the floor, I punched him in the gut, and then sent an elbow crashing into the side of his face. He crashed down, landing next to his badge.

I glanced at Dante. “Will you do the honors?”

“With fucking pleasure.” Dante stepped forward and knelt down, flipping Mike over onto his stomach. He grabbed the detective’s shirt and wrinkly-ass jacket by the collar and jerked down savagely, tearing the material down the middle, baring Mike’s back.

“Gonna fucking kill you,” Mike moaned, struggling to get up. Dante put his foot between the cop’s shoulder blades, holding him down.

“Hush now,” I said, pulling my belt off. “You need to save your breath because you’re going to need it. I looked at the belt in my hand. It wasn’t actually mine. I’d never wear something like this under normal circumstances. I saw a good ol’ boy from Texas walking through the casino this morning and knew it was exactly what I was looking for – a big thick strap of leather with a huge silver belt buckle on the end. The cowboy said he got that buckle by riding bulls. He was very proud of it. He sold it to me for three-thousand dollars.

I let the weighted end swing back and forth, inches above the floor. I nodded and Dante moved his foot, stepping back against the door again. “Mike, trust me when I say this. This is going to hurt you a hell of a lot more than it does me.” I swung. He screamed. I swung again. He screamed again. We played that game for about half an hour.

Chapter 16: Krista

I sat across the table from Luc in the casino restaurant, taking a healthy sip of wine to help build up the courage to do what I was planning on doing. “So you’re not going to tell me what happened earlier?”

Luc sipped his scotch. “No, I’m not. Just know that Mike will never bother you ever again.”

I inhaled deeply and closed my eyes. So this was what freedom felt like. It had been so long that I had forgotten. I took another sip of wine and reached across the table, taking Luc’s hand in mine. “I didn’t have a chance to tell you something yesterday.”

“And what might that be?”

I smiled. “I love you.” The look on his face was priceless. He started to stand up but I held up my hand. “No. Sit.” He looked at me curiously but did as I said. That right there proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that he really did love me. Lucifer Libonati didn’t take orders from just anybody.

“Have you called your parents yet?” I asked.

He smiled. “I wasn’t sure if I had a reason to call them.”

I arched an eyebrow. “Are you sure now?”

His smile grew wider. “Positive.”

I nodded. “You should call them.” I downed the rest of my wine. It was now or never.

“Okay,” Luc said, digging his phone out of jacket pocket.

As he swiped across the screen, I sank down in my chair and disappeared under the table.

“What are you —”

“Shhh,” I whispered. “Don’t talk about it or I’ll chicken out.”

He chuckled as I slid his zipper down. “Whatever my sexy angel wants.”

I heard him dialing a number as I pulled his cock from his pants. It was already getting hard, throbbing in my hand. I ran my tongue slowly up his impressive length as I heard him start talking.

“Hi, Mom. Where’s Dad? I have some great news.”

Chapter 1: Dante

Then…

“Dante!”

The scream was high-pitched and shrill, like that of a little girl. I’d be sure to pick on him mercilessly about that later. Only ten-years old and Alyosha was already determined to be a man in all things. As his older brother, it was my job to tease him when he failed, although I’d punch anyone else in the face if they got the idea to pick on him.

But there was no worry of anyone picking on him now because he wasn’t the only one screaming. An army of strangers in black suits had invaded our home, their guns filling the air with acrid smoke that burned our nostrils. Many people were screaming. Many people were dying. I didn’t know if our parents were among the dead.

We ran into our bedroom, slamming the door shut behind us. I ran to the window without slowing down, only releasing my brother’s hand long enough to slide the window open and step out onto the tree branch outside our second-story window. I held out my hand. “Come, Alyosha. We have to go.”

He stepped to the window, looking at me with wide nervous eyes. We had used this tree to escape the watchful eyes of our parents and bodyguards numerous times, but those times had been quieter, calmer. Even through the closed door, I could hear footsteps storming up to the second floor. We were the third door down the hall. They’d be here within minutes.

“Alyosha!” I opened and closed my fingers, silently pleading for him to take my hand. I didn’t know who the strange men were but I had heard stories. We had been warned by our parents. They would either kidnap us and sell us back to our parents, kidnap us and sell us to someone else, or they’d simply kill us. None of those sounded like fun to me.

My brother narrowed his eyes. “You don’t tell anyone I was scared. Not ever.”

I sighed. It was valuable information he was demanding I give up. Papa would be proud. I nodded. “Deal.”

Alyosha wrapped his tiny hand in mine and stepped out next to me on the branch. We ducked down as the bedroom door slammed open, banging against the wall. “Go,” I whispered. He nodded and ran down the branch. It connected to the tree at almost a perfect 45-degree angle. I learned about that kind of stuff in school. I didn’t know at the time what that kind of information would be useful for, but right now thinking about it helped keep me from worrying that me and my brother might die.

We hopped from the branch to a lower one, and then jumped the remaining distance to the ground. I glanced up at the window. Nobody was there. “Run,” I said to Alyosha as I took his hand, running towards the driveway, half-dragging him behind me. We had always been taught to get to the cars if anything happened, that a bodyguard would take us away from danger. But two of the cars were on fire and more of those black-suited men were patrolling the area. There was no safety there.

I spun and headed towards the gardenia bushes along the edge of the house, letting go of Alyosha’s hand and pushing some of the branches to the side, lifting them up. “Crawl under.”

“Bugs,” Alyosha said, frowning.

“Bullets,” I replied.

He pressed his lips together. After a couple of seconds, he nodded, falling to his knees and crawling into the tiny space I had created. I moved more branches back, being careful not to break them, and joined my brother, kneeling down beside him.

The guns weren’t going off as much. I guessed that meant anyone who was able to fight was already dead.

“Remember your promise,” Alyosha said.

I nodded. “Quiet,” I whispered. “I will.”
