Carrithers petitioned the S.P.R. to examine unpublished documents pertaining to its examination of the Theosophical Society, he discovered that both Myers and Edmund Gurney had heard H.P.B.'s astral bell. While not ruling out trickery, Gurney thought it a free sound unlike that produced by mechanical objects concealed in clothing, and Myers mentioned that he could not discern any deadening of the clear tingling sound. Both men's comments were deleted from the final draft of the S.P.R.'s 1884 preliminary report on the Society.
