“Well… you look like you’re in good hands, so Emeritus and I will be heading back. Forget about torturing the Council of Witches tonight, Child. We’ll set all that right soon enough. Remember—there is a time for every purpose. This is not the time to make more war.”

Jezibaba nodded from the comfort of Damien’s arms and watched the couple disappear. She buried her face in his neck, happy to be alive, and happy to have the slick tongued dragon hugging her. When she pulled away, she shook her head.

“The rogues are out of business, but it’s not over. Acheron spoke of them being paid to kill the girls and we need to find out who is funding the efforts. By the way… did you send Carol and Hildy to intervene?”

Damien huffed and shook his head. “No, of course not. I would never send children to fight dragons. That only works out well in myths. In reality, the children will die every time. Hell, I would never have sent
you
to fight the soulless ones, no matter your form. You scare the shit out of me with what you’re willing to take on. I don’t know how I’m ever going to get used to what you do for a living.”

Jezibaba nodded. “It’s my purpose in life—for now. I’m working on an exit plan, but it’s harder keeping my future replacements alive than I thought it would be. Dragon fire amulets weren’t going to stop those lighting bolts. Hell, just one of Acheron’s massive claws could have squashed both of them. I’m going to have to put the fear of Baba into them just to keep them alive.”

Damien shrugged as he chuckled. “You’ve been telling them to face their fears head-on. Perhaps they were taking your advice.”

Jezibaba snorted. “I meant their fear of me… and authority… not creatures with eyeballs larger than they are. I’m cold and tired. And I’m going to need my wand to fix the damage I did with my giant dragon ass.”

She waved a hand and re-clothed them both. She reached into her bra and pulled out her wand, extending it. Red and gold glitter magic swirling up and down it. Maybe fixing the steps wasn’t going to be that hard after all. Maybe Damien could bend the wrought-iron bench back into shape.

“I’m wearing what I was wearing before I shifted. This is very nice, Jezibaba. Plus you saved me from the naked walk of shame back to my room. I’m really going to like sleeping with such a powerful witch,” Damien said.

“You’re going to like dating a witch, Professor Assume-Too-Much.
Dating
—not sleeping with,” Jezibaba said firmly. “I am keeping my own space and you’ll be keeping yours. I need to come and go without checking in with you every five seconds. From time to time, we might visit each other for the night. These conditions are the only way we have a chance of working as a couple.”

Damien chuckled. “Are you really going to make me earn your love one extraordinary sleep-over at a time?”

Jezibaba smiled. “Yes. You can start tonight if you want. Just know that I will be expecting you to make good on that extraordinary adjective.”

“Okay. Challenge accepted,” Damien declared, sweeping his startled dragon witch up into his arms for a blistering hot kiss.
