Dan glanced at him, and Patrick realized that he was shirtless. “I play baseball sometimes,” he said, before the light turned green.

Chapter 21

Patrick closed the door of the motel room and followed Harriet and Alecia down the stairs to the Jeep. Diane, dressed in her uniform, waited at the bottom and watched them climb down.

“Thought you’d like to know that Brian was flown to the Seattle trauma center. Someone took a baseball bat to his head. He’s in a coma, and they suspect brain damage. They aren’t sure if he’ll come out of it. If he does, by some miracle, they don’t expect he’ll be the same again.”

Patrick pressed his hand to the small of his daughter’s back and urged her past Diane, to her Jeep. “Sounds to me as if Brian saw justice.”

“I remember hearing that you once took a baseball bat to him to chase him from Boston.” Diane chewed a piece of gum and watched Patrick with a look that gave nothing away. He respected that in her.

Harriet leaned in. “Isn’t it funny how popular baseball is? Guess it’s a good thing my husband was being jerked around by the local cops and couldn’t have done it.”

Alecia grabbed her dad’s arm. “Diane, are you going to cause my dad trouble?”

Diane met her gaze, and something passed between them. “No. I can’t see much effort or interest being put into finding someone who did the state a favor and saved us the cost of a trial for someone who most likely would’ve gotten just a slap on the wrist.” Diane glanced away. “When are you leaving for Boston?”

“We have something to finish this morning, and then we’re flying out tonight,” Alecia said. This time, she had left off her ball cap, and her long hair was loose. The bruising on her face had turned a purplish yellow.

Diane reached into her shirt pocket, took out a card, and handed it to Alecia. “If you ever remember who that guy was who saved you, I’d be interested in hearing about him.”

Patrick took the card and stuck it in his back pocket. “It was nice meeting you, Diane,” he said, and he ushered Harriet and Alecia into the Jeep.

“What’s going to happen to the wheel when we leave? I mean, I didn’t finish it.” Alecia sat crossed legged in the meadow in front of the medicine wheel. Her mother had finished building four Manitou outside the wheel in the four directions.

Harriet pressed her hands to her hips and looked at Alicia with her stern, motherly gaze. “Alecia Moran, you don’t understand. You did what you needed to do. The healing has begun. This wheel is part of the sacred geometry, and its purpose, the intent you put into it, will continue without us here. You’ve started it—now let it work. It’s time for you to leave. When you’re ready, you’ll come back. But someone else has work to do first.”

This time, Harriet looked up as Dan strode through the meadow without hesitation, coming straight toward them. She gestured to him. “He who comes, it’s his time to care for the wheel.”

Alecia jumped up just as Dan reached her. She glanced at her mother. “The shaman he crossed paths with… He was one of your elders, wasn’t he?”

Harriet nodded, and this time, she smiled at Dan.

Lorhainne Eckhart is a new author to me, but she is definitely going on my list of authors' books to lookout for because she turned my world and emotions upside with this compelling, realistic story of heartache and unconditional love between a man and a woman, a man and his son, and a woman and a little boy who she quickly grows to love.

Overview:

Emily Nelson, a courageous young mother, ends a loveless, bitter marriage and strikes out on her own. She answers an ad as a cook and live-in caregiver to a three-year-old boy on a local ranch. Ranch owner Brad Friessen hires and moves in Emily and her daughter. But Emily soon discovers something’s seriously wrong with the boy, and the reclusive, difficult man who hired her can’t see the behavior and how delayed his son is. So Emily researches until she stumbles across what she suspects are the soft signs of autism. Now she must tell him, give him hope, and help him come to terms with this neurological disorder—to take the necessary steps to get his child the help he needs.

As their lives become intertwined, their attraction is unavoidable—a connection sparks between them. But just as they’re getting close, Brad’s estranged wife, Crystal, returns after abandoning the family two years earlier. Among the shock and confusion is one disturbing question Brad can’t shake: How does Crystal know so much of his personal business, the inner working of the ranch, and Emily’s relationship with his son?

Crystal must’ve had a plan, as she somehow gains the upper hand, driving a wedge in the emotional bond forged between Brad, Emily, and the children. The primary focus for care and therapy of three-year-old Trevor is diverted. The lengths to which Crystal will go, the lies, the greed, just to keep what’s hers, are nothing short of cold and calculating. Emily’s forced out of the house. Brad fights to save his boy, to protect what’s his, and struggles over his greatest sacrifice—Emily, and the haunting question: Has he lost her forever?
