these jeans and into something more comfortable, though. If

you don’t mind.”

Sitting there naked on his couch, she really didn’t have

much to say about him changing his jeans. “That’s fine.”

With the look of a schoolboy on his face, Sam headed for the

bathroom.

Donna grabbed Grace’s shirt and pulled it over her head.

It covered her pretty well, at least enough so they could eat

some pizza before the next round. She nearly blushed.

Round two. That would be fun. Smiling, Donna realized she

would be very tired at work tomorrow. Or maybe she’d use a

sick day. More like a sex day, she laughed to herself. She

and Sam could spend the whole day…

The ringing of Sam’s phone interrupted that pleasant

image. It was late, nearly midnight. Who could be calling

Sam’s apartment this late? “Should I get that?” she called at

the closed bathroom door.

“No, let the machine pick up. It’s probably my nosy

friend Gary,” came the muffled reply.

She smiled at that. Even guys had annoying nosy

friends. That was an interesting revelation. “Okay.”

On the fifth ring, the machine picked up, Sam’s deep

voice said simply “leave a message” and the beep sounded

followed by a female saying, “Sam. Where the hell are you?

Dammit. Call me as soon as you get this message.”

Donna swallowed the bile that rose in her throat. He had

a girlfriend. That had to be it. Who else would call at

midnight and be angry he wasn’t home? “Stupid, stupid,

stupid,” Donna chanted softly to herself. No man was as

good as he seemed, Sam included. So he threw himself in

front of a bullet for her, big deal. He was also fucking

around on his girlfriend, and Donna had made it easy for

him, throwing herself on top of his penis.

With a sigh she pulled on her underwear and pants,

shoved her feet into her shoes and stuffed her bra in her

purse along with the unused rubbers. Wouldn’t need those,

not for a long, long time. Grace could have them back along

with the rest of the men in the world because Donna had had

it with them all. First Daniel cheated on Jade and now Sam

was cheating on whomever, only Donna was the dirty whore

he’d done it with.

The bathroom door opened and Sam emerged wearing

sweatpants and his tank top. Five minutes ago, she would

have thought him the best sight in the world.

He frowned when he saw her coat in her hand. “Are you

leaving?”

“Yeah, it’s late. I have to go. I have work in the

morning.”

He nodded and walked toward her. “I understand.”

Leaning down, he aimed to plant a kiss on her mouth when

she turned her face so it landed on her cheek instead. Sam

backed up and looked down at her as she did her best to not

visibly shake. “Can I call you tomorrow?”

Donna managed to say, “You don’t have to. Really.

I…uh…have to go.” She shook so badly, she didn’t know

how she managed to unlock the door and get into the

hallway but she did. Passing Daniel’s door the irony of how

she and Sam met hit her hard.

It seemed nothing good happened in this building. She’d

wanted things to work out with Sam so badly, it hurt even

worse that they hadn’t.

“A girlfriend? Are you sure?” Grace frowned.

“Who else could it be that late?” Donna let her head drop

until it clunked against her kitchen table.

“I’m sorry, Don. I of all people know how you feel and

it sucks,” Jade stroked her back gently. “I can’t believe you

even came into work today.”

Yeah, but she’d been a zombie and gotten nothing done.

Donna laughed bitterly. “Thanks, Jade. You are very sweet,

but it’s not even close to the same thing. You and Daniel had

a relationship when he cheated on you. You loved him. All I

did was have sex with Sam. Incredible cheating-on-your-

girlfriend-with-a-dumb-girl-you-saved-from-a-bullet sex, but

still, just sex. It doesn’t compare to what you must be feeling

over Daniel.”

Grace shook her head and shoved a dip-laden potato chip

into her mouth. “All men suck. At least you got some

incredible sex out of it though.”

Donna rolled her eyes. “Thanks, that is very

comforting.”

Grace shrugged and dipped another chip. “It’s more than

I’ve had recently.”

Donna sighed. She and Grace had had contests before

about who had gone the longest without sex. Looks like she

would be way behind after last night, with not much more

than some painful memories to show for it.

Her cell phone began ringing and Donna jumped,

thinking the same thing Grace had the night before.

Everyone she knew was there, leaving Sam as the only

option.

Grace held up one hand. “Allow me.”

Donna’s mouth opened in protest as Grace grabbed the

phone off the kitchen counter and flipped it open. “Hello…

Sam. Well, how nice of you to call. This is Grace, Donna’s

friend… Yes, Donna is here. What, is your girlfriend busy

tonight so you have time for Donna? I don’t think so.”

Donna watched open mouthed as Grace flipped the

phone shut and sat back at the table.

Grace glanced up at Donna’s stricken face. “What? Did

you want to see him again?”

“I don’t know…no…wh…what did he say?” Donna

blathered.

“Not much, I hung up on him. I noticed he didn’t call

back, though. An innocent man would have called back

proclaiming his innocence,” Grace explained.

Jade nodded. “Makes sense, I’m afraid.”

Donna looked at Jade. “What did Daniel do when you

confronted him?”

Jade dropped her eyes. “I…uh…haven’t exactly done

that yet.”

Both women turned toward her as Jade suddenly stared

intently at the table. “He was so sweet after the shooting and

I really just needed to be held. I couldn’t bring it up then. I

will.”

“So what, you spent the night with him suspecting he’s

cheating on you and didn’t say a word?” Donna asked in

amazement.

Jade looking ashamed and a bit teary. “It was the best

sex we ever had.”

Grace snorted out a derogatory noise. “You, too? Jeez.”

Jade nodded. “I know. It’s shameful. I just needed to be

somewhere familiar after what happened. And we really

aren’t sure he’s cheating.”

Grace’s snort showed her opinion on that.

Donna sighed. “It doesn’t matter. Grace is right. All men

suck, we might as well take the orgasms where we can get

‘em.”

Grace raised her glass of red wine. “Hear, hear.”

And then the pounding on the door began, followed by

the yelling. “Donna. Open this door.”

Donna’s eyes opened wide. “It’s Sam.”

Jade smiled. “And he sounds pissed, like an innocent

man falsely accused of cheating.”

Donna’s heart leapt in her throat. “You think?”

“Only one way to find out. Want me to open the door?”

Grace offered.

“No!” Donna held up one hand. “I’ll handle this.”

Donna barely heard Grace mumbling something about

an ungrateful bitch as she unchained the door and opened it

to reveal a very angry looking Sam.

“What the hell makes you think I have a girlfriend?” he

pushed his way passed her into the apartment foyer.

Donna scrambled to avoid the topic. “How did you know

my address?”

“It was on the police report from the shooting, and don’t

change the subject, answer the question.”

She swallowed hard and prepared to face the music, no

matter what it turned out to be. “The woman who called your

apartment at midnight...”

Sam looked less angry now. “…was my sister. If you

had asked, I would have told you that. My mother is in a

nursing home and she had another small stroke last night.

The doctors have my sister’s number.” Sam looked

embarrassed, as if he wasn’t used to discussing his family

life with anyone. Figures, the typical tough guy act, but more

importantly, the caller was his sister! That was amazingly

good news.

Donna touched his arm softly, noting he was wearing his

leather jacket, bullet hole and all. Her heart melted all over

again as she wanted to wrap this hard on the outside but so

soft on the inside man up in her arms. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t

know. Is…is she alright?”

“Yeah. She’ll be okay. I really wish you had asked me

though. I’ve been going through hell all day wondering what

I did wrong to make you leave like that.”

“I know. I’m sorry about that, too.” Donna dropped her

eyes until Sam’s index finger beneath her chin raised her

face back up to his.

Sam’s thumb stroked her cheek. “Are you gonna invite

me in?” He glanced over her shoulder at Jade and Grace

standing in the kitchen doorway and staring at them.

“Ooo, he’s such a caveman. I like it,” Grace growled.

“Mmm hmm,” Jade agreed.

Sam raised a brow. “Or maybe we should go to my

place.”

Donna grinned and grabbed his hand, pulling him into

the apartment. “No, I want you to meet my friends officially,

without police and ambulances in the middle. They are

gonna love you, you know.”

Sam smirked. “You think so?”

“Of course! And you will love them.” Donna glanced

over her shoulder then back at him. “You better. We come as

a package deal. Love me, love my friends.”

“You got that right!” Grace echoed from behind her.

Sam smiled. “I think I can handle that.” He lowered his

head toward hers and then paused, glancing over her

shoulder at Grace and Jade. “Do you mind if I kiss her

now?”

Donna turned her head just enough to see Jade smile and

Grace nod her approval. “Sure, knock yourself out.”

Sam’s large rough hand turned Donna’s face back to his.

“I
am
going to get you alone later.” Then he kissed her until

she forgot they had company, but that was okay. After all,

what are friends for?

BETWEEN LOVE AND HATE

Cat Johnson

Chapter 1

“Ah, Jade. Mmmm, you feel so good.”

Jade Swenson lay face down on her boyfriend Daniel’s

bed as he kissed her bare shoulder, his naked body hovering

above hers. She felt his erection pressing between her legs

and stifled a sob.

Daniel brushed her long blond hair to one side so he

could nuzzle her neck and nip at her earlobe. “I want you so

bad, baby. I’ll never stop wanting you.”

Jade bit her lip until she tasted blood. She closed her

eyes tightly to prevent the tears from spilling out.

She felt Daniel become still above her. “Jade. Are you

alright, baby?” His voice was so gentle and caring. The lying

cheating bastard! How can he sound so sweet and do what he

did?

Jade swallowed the lump in her throat, her voice

sounding husky in her own ears. “I’m fine.”

He pushed further between her legs and pressed just the

tip of his length into her entrance. Daniel’s large hands slid

down her arms until he reached hers where he laced their

fingers together.

Driving slowly deeper into her, he groaned, “Mmm, so

tight. Nice.”

Jade managed to nod, thinking to herself that knowing

your boyfriend was cheating on you tended to make the body

not so receptive to things like sex with him.

He finally worked all the way in her, thrusting into her

with long, slow strokes. Jade did nothing to help him but her

damn body betrayed her anyway as every plunge of his cock

sent tingles up her spine.

Daniel slid one hand beneath her, rubbing her clit,

knowing exactly how to bring her to orgasm. Eight months

together meant they knew each other’s body so well sex was

always great, even now. This, the sex, was one reason she

hadn’t confronted him yet. After being taken hostage and

nearly killed, she needed to be held by familiar arms. She

couldn’t be alone right now.

Daniel increased the rhythm of his stroke while his

finger circled faster, harder until Jade shook with pleasure

and tears. Jade began to shudder, her breath coming in tiny

gasps.

“Oh, baby. Cum for me. I love you.” His breath, warm

against her ear, sent chills down her spine.

God, she would miss him, but how could she stay with
