“Great. I was really worried. You’re a hard person to shop for.”
“You have no idea.” I replied. “What’s in the second box?”
“Open it and find out.”
I grabbed the ivory colored box, lifted off the lid and peered into the box.
“It’s a cupcake.” I said with confusion. “We just had cupcakes.”
He stepped forward and took the cupcake out of my hand. “Yes, we did. With other people. I thought it might be nice to lay in this hammock under the stars and share this one with each other.”
He slid his hand around the nape of my neck and pulled me in for a kiss that was hot enough to curl my toes. When he released me, I could feel my lips throbbing and I had the urge to pull his lips down to mine for just one more taste, but I refrained. The idea was to take things slow with Carter, all things I was hiding considered.
Instead, I hopped into the hammock and made room for him to slide in beside me.
Once settled, he pulled me into his arms and pressed a kiss to the top of my head.
“I have to tell you, Fortune, this is the best Valentine’s Day of my life.”
“Mine too.” I answered honestly. The fact that it had been my only Valentine’s was beside the point. I was thoroughly convinced that there would never be a Valentine’s Day as fulfilling as the one I was currently experiencing.
“I feel a bit bad though.” I admitted as he pinched off a piece of cupcake and fed it to me.
“Why?” he asked, his voice full of concern.
“You got me these thoughtful gifts and I didn’t get you anything except a night with two arguing old ladies, a hopeless romantic in the form of an aspiring pastry chef, and when you came in I had the beaters from an electric mixer in my hair and a mixture of flour and butter covering me from head to toe. I’m pretty sure that’s not how dates are supposed to go.”
The sound of his laughter rumbled above me as he shifted to look into my eyes.
“But that’s what makes it so great, Fortune. Nothing is as it should be with you. I could take any other woman out and know exactly what she expects, wants, and how the night is going to end, but with you I never know what I’m going to get or what situation I’m going to find you in. You keep me on my toes, woman.” He chuckled and kissed the tip of my nose. “And in my eyes, there’s not a woman in the world who can compare to you.”
I felt hot tears prick my eyes and quickly blinked them away. I didn’t know what was wrong with me. I really must be getting soft.
“No one’s ever said anything that nice to me before.” I admitted.
“I find that hard to believe.” He said. “But everything I said was the honest to goodness truth. You’re an amazing woman, and I can’t think of anywhere I’d rather be than right here beside you.”
I took the offered piece of cupcake and smiled up at the amazing man I had somehow come to be with. Life couldn’t get much better.
Carter kissed the frosting from my lips.
“Now, would you like to tell me how exactly you ended up with those beaters in your hair?”
I laughed. “It’s a long story.”
