“There still friends of my folks and yours. I wanted them to still feel part of their community. It’s not them the clan shamed, just their son. Do you think…I mean will we ever see him again?” Kerry shrugged her shoulders.
“His windows closed and Willard sang like a parrot for a cracker, thinking it would somehow help him. Paulie should know he would. I think he knows it won’t ever be safe to come back, even to ease his parent’s minds.”
“Susannah Trixie Verde-Beaumont—yes, that’s right, I’m using your full name young lady—get your butt over here right now,” called Susan’s mother when her daughter didn’t make any progress towards her. Susan gave a martyred sigh, a longing look at her plate of stolen food, and flounced over to her mother in a shimmering meringue of white.
“You don’t have to be nice about it. You have every right to be mad at their son,” said Caleb, letting his annoyance rumble in his chest.
She pressed a finger to his lips. “I think you have enough mad on for the both of us. I feel sorry for them. They won’t listen to anyone trying to explain what happened. They want to blame you and me. It’s easier for them I guess. One day they’ll have to wake up and realize that Paulie was a big boy. He made his own bed and he’s got to lie in it.” Kerry pouted.
“You miss him?” Caleb asked unsure.
“I miss the friendship—the guy he was before he went bug shit crazy on me. Strangely enough though, Dick seems to be falling into that roll now.”
“How is Dick?” asked Caleb with a little smirk.
“He’s in England, visiting some chick in Hastings who’s Wiccan like him. I think the two of them have really hit it off. It kind of feels like I brought them together, which makes me feel better about how I near on ripped his heart out.”
Caleb kissed her softly but it turned into more, Kerry pressed her body against his and demanded his lips part so she could caress his tongue.
A loud cough made them break apart. Luka stood on the other side of the table his arms around Susan’s waist. They beamed.
“Ain’tyoutwojustcute.”
Caleb smiled a little, he was getting used to the way Luka spoke, but occasionally he would still mishear whole sentences.
“Sowhenyourtwogettinghitched?”
Kerry pulled a face and Caleb held his hands up in innocence but looked quickly back to Luka.
“Don’t jinx it. I only just got her to agree to move in with me.”
Luka grinned said something else that he didn’t catch and waddled Susan away to the dance floor.
“Seriously,” Caleb asked, “how does he make it as a doctor? I can’t understand what he’s saying half the time.”
Kerry smiled at him. “Sounds like most doctors to me. For instance, mine told me today…” she said, smiling and leaned into his ear to whisper.
Caleb’s face broke into a shocked grin from ear to ear. “Are you sure?”
Kerry nodded her head with a little grin and nuzzled into his neck.
“Susan owes you a slice of cake. You know you really should let me make an honest woman of you.”
“Nope.” She continued to grin. “I want to live in sin.”
“That’s great, until your daddy finds out of course.”
“I told Mama to break it to him gentle, once he had a few drinks in him.”
Caleb winced and froze as he distinctly heard the sound of a shotgun cock behind him.
