She sat bolt upright when she saw him. “Landon? What are you doing here?” she cried out, her eyes bright with tears.

“I called Mirabelle and she called Landon,” I told Camille. “I believe he has something that he wants to say to you.”

“You know what? I’ve always wanted to move to New York City to live with a hot vampire chick. Do you know any?” Landon asked, pulling her to her feet and throwing his arms around her. “You idiot. I thought you broke up with me because you got bored with me.”

“Landon, look at me,” she sniffled. “I’m a vampire! Warlocks and vampires – that never happens!”

“Time to start a new tradition, then,” he said. “There are witches and warlocks in New York. I can find a new coven. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to get out of this damned furnace of a city.”

“Oh, my God.” She put her hand on her chest, tears running down her face. “Is this really happening? You’ll come with me, really?”

He grabbed her and kissed her passionately.  I turned to leave them to their reunion, relief washing over me.

Landon called after me “Hey, I bought some cat food for Barney, since he can’t go out and hunt. Mary sent it; she’s one of the witches whose familiar ran off.”

I left Camille and Landon alone, kissing passionately on the reclining chair.

Inside the house, I found the cat food sitting on the cou
nter. It was in a big bag marked “Paradise Pets.”  I poured it into Barney’s can, and dumped some tuna on it for good measure, and then set it by his cushioned cat bed. His leg was in a cast, but he was as scrappy and obnoxious as ever.  “I don’t suppose you could top that off with some dead mouse guts?” he asked hopefully.

“Ewww, no!”

“Fine. Lousy service in this place,” he grumbled, and dove into the food with gusto. Apparently the lack of mouse guts was not a deal breaker.

I left Barney there devouring his food, and went to find Nicholas, who had retired to his room.  He had changed into a silken robe and was sitting in an armchair, but he stood up when I came in.  “Everything okay with the lovebirds?” he asked.

“Couldn’t be better.” I glanced at his robe, and a wicked idea occurred to me. “Hey, I know how we can test to see if my powers are getting any better.”

For the last two days I’d been feeding exclusively off Nicholas’ Thralls.  I was hoping that with time, whatever was in Peyton’s blood would leave my system and my strength would come back.

I looked at Nicholas’ silk robe, concentrated, and using my mind, I pulled on the sash of his robe. It untied,  and the front of his robe fell open.

“Using your powers for good,” he laughed. “I love it.”

I tugged again, and his silk boxers dropped to his feet.

“Very nice,” he said. “Now let me show off some of my powers.”

He did the vampire thing, where he blurred across the room and pressed up against me.

“Do not use your strength to rip off my dress-” too late.  Damn it. We went through a lot of clothing in this house.

“Do not move,” he said sternly, and knelt down in front of me.

I wasn’t going anywhere.

He knelt down, kissing my soft, rounded belly.  Nicholas was the only man that I’d ever let do that.  He’d made me believe that my full figure was beautiful.

When he reached the cleft between my legs, I moaned. His strong hands spread my thighs open, and he ran his tongue along the seam of my pussy, then spread my lips open.

“Yes,” I gasped. “Like that.”

As he suckled me, I closed my eyes and let sensation sweep over me and take me away.  Heat spread through my body, and a sensation of lightness.

His tongue probed deeper, insistently, slipping inside me. He moved his hand and began rubbing the swollen pearl of my clitoris with the pad of his thumb, and I threaded my fingers through the silky strands of his hair and moaned with pleasure.

“Ohhhh….” I felt the hot waves of pleasure cresting over me, and then they came crashing down on me, and I cried out.

As my orgasm took me, Nicholas spun me around and bent me over the bed, and faster than I would have thought possible, he was inside me. Wave after wave of pleasure swept over me, wringing me out, and Nicholas began pumping into me.

His thickness filled me, stretched me, and I felt my slick tunnel squeezing him. More orgasms. I could barely stand it, the pleasure was so intense, and as he fucked me, he reached around and rubbed my clit. I cried out, inarticulate, helpless, speared on his cock and pressed face down against the silky comforter.

Finally, with a guttural cry, he exploded inside me, filling me with his hot, sticky seed.  It felt as if he came forever, his hips jerking and shuddering.  I lay still on the bed, spent and exhausted.

He collapsed on top of me, his sweaty flesh pressing against mine.  I breathed in the smell of musk and sex and his woodsy cologne.

“Got any more tricks you want to show me?” he murmured into my ear.

Chapter Twelve

Hours later, I was climbing out of the shower with Nicholas when we heard a frantic pounding on the bedroom door.

I quickly pulled on cotton sweatpants, bra and sweatshirt, as Nicholas went to answer. He was stark naked, but he never cared about that kind of thing.

One of his Wardens was at the door.

“What is it?” I called out, stepping into a pair of sandals.

There’s something wrong with Barney,” Nicholas said. “He’s having some kind of fit.”

I ran out of the room while Nicholas got dressed.

One of Nicholas’ Thralls, a woman named Farrah, led me to the kitchen where Landon and Camille were kneeling next to Barney.  He was frantically pawing at the back door.  His leg was still in a cast, and he wasn’t supposed to be walking any farther than his litter box, which I’d placed about two feet from his bed.

Cedric was standing there too, looking bemused. He was used to taking on rogue vampires and violent humans, but a crazy cat? This was clearly outside of his experience.

I ran over to him. “Barney, stop! You’ll hurt yourself! What are you doing?” I demanded.

He ignored me, and kept pawing. When I bent down to pick him up, he hissed at me, baring his teeth.  I jumped back in alarm.  His eyes were huge, and wild.

“He’s bewitched,” Landon said.  He looked up at me. “Has he ever behaved like this before?”

“Never,” I said fervently. “This just started. What’s happening?”

Landon smacked himself in the head. “The cat food. It’s the god damned food. The last cat that ate it ran off, too. And all the cats in Bay Breeze eat food from the same pet shop. That’s the only connection.”

He looked down at Barney and began muttering an incantation, and slowly Barney calmed down. His eyes were glazed and he panted heavily.

I ran to call the veterinarian, and Landon ran to call Mirabelle.

He hung up. “I’m going to meet Mirabelle, and a group of us are going over to Paradise pets to confront Carmel.”

“I’m coming,” I said. “If she’s powerful enough to take on all the witches in Bay Breeze, you may need help.”

“That’s the weird thing, though,” Landon said, as we rushed outside, with Nicholas hot on my heels.  “She’s not powerful at all. Her mother was human, her father a warlock, but not a particularly strong one, and her powers have always been pretty weak. And why would she do this to us?”

“Maybe she resented all those people who were more powerful than her,” I suggested.

“If she did, she hid it well,” Landon said, sliding into the driver’s seat of his car.

Nicholas started up his car, I climbed in the front seat, and Cedric and three Wardens piled in.

We met up with Mirabelle and Matteo and a group of witches and warlocks about a quarter mile from Paradise Pets, parking in a public lot. We all climbed out of our cars and jogged there, so that she wouldn’t hear our cars pulling up.  Mirabelle and a dozen witches and warlocks took the lead. We vampires had to slow ourselves down to match their speed; I could feel my speed and strength returning, at least a little.

Hope flared in me as I jogged. Some day I’d be strong again.

As we approached Paradise Pets, it was clear that Carmel knew we were coming. Maybe she had some kind of magical security system.  The stairwell that ran up the side of the building splintered and collapsed as we drew near.  All the lights on the block went out.

The darkness didn’t bother us vampires; we have perfect night vision. The warlocks waved their hands and made some gestures and muttered something, and globes of light floated in the air. At the same time, Matteo began muttering something, and the door to the shop began shaking.

“Let’s do this old school style,” Nicholas said. He ran over and kicked open the front door of the pet shop. We ran inside and rushed through the store. Mirabelle led the way, charging up the stairs, chanting all the way. The lights turned back on, but the whole building started shaking.

The door to Carmel’s living room flew open.

Carmel stood in the middle of the room, small, totally harmless looking, except for the glowing red eyes. Whoa. When had that happened?

“Get out of my house, or die.” Her voice was a terrifying deep growl.

“You bewitched my cat, you bitch!” I screamed at her, and she turned and threw a ball of crackling white energy at me. One minute there was no ball, the next minute I was being chased by the Orb of Death.

Nicholas jumped in front of me, and the orb smacked him in the chest and clung to him, and I could smell burning flesh. The house shook harder, and furniture began lifting from the floor.  The other vampires and I all clawed at the orb and it burned our fingers.

More flaming white balls of power whirled through the room, and striking several of the witches. The smell of burning flesh in the room made me nauseous.  The air crackled with strange, dark energy and I staggered, dizzy and disoriented.

Mirabelle stood at the center of the storm, perfectly calm, chanting loudly, and all abruptly the furniture fell down with a thump. The house stopped moving.  The dark crackling energy in the room was gone, and the air felt clean and pure.

The energy balls vanished. My blistered, stinging fingers began healing, slowly. I could feel the pain fade.

And the woman in the center of the room was no longer Carmel. It was Leonore, hair disheveled, eyes blazing with rage.

“What the hell?” Mirabelle yelled furiously. “Where is Carmel?”

“Where do you think?” Leonore sneered. “Where all weaklings should be. Dead. Six feet under. I killed her months ago. I worked here in her place, and you idiots were too stupid to notice.  You never even noticed how I was never home, did you? Of course not. None of you gave a fuck about me.”

“Why,
Leonore? Why would you do this?”

“I did it to show everyone how weak you are.  I should have been high priestess,” she hissed furiously. “Not you!”

“You always made a huge deal about how you didn’t even want the job!” Mirabelle snapped.

“What was I going to do, beg for it? I have my pride!” Angry tears ran down Leonore’s cheeks. “Mother never even considered me! You were always her precious little favorite. I was the oldest, it should have been me!”
