Delia climbed the stairs to the archway, and slowly touched both hands to the flowing blueness.  Immediately she felt the immense power pour into her, and so much knowledge, images.

When she emerged later—what seemed like hours later—from the tomb, Delia felt not only more powerful than she’d ever dreamed, but connected to every vampire on earth.  And she knew without knowing why, that they were hers to control.

Out of the shadows of the alley to the right off her, Delia could sense a vampire skulking, inching out of the shadows and toward the light.  She could tell that it hurt him, but she pushed him to come to her, forcing him to push past the pain even the diffused light of day inflicted on him.  He looked about him in horror, obviously thinking he was in a nightmare of some sort.

When he was close enough to the edge of the shade the building’s lee caused, she let him stop.  She didn’t want him to burst into flame.  No, she had an idea... a random thought that had popped into her head, and she wanted to test that theory.

“What do you require of me, master?” the vampire said, his voice full of fear.

Delia liked that.  He must have been older than he looked.  They just didn’t instill the correct politeness or manners in the youth of today.

She reached out and snatched a hold of his wrist, and so very slowly started to pull him bodily out into the sun.

At first he resisted, pulling back.  But she was so much stronger than he was; it was as if he were playing tug of war with an elephant.

To his credit he did not beg or plead or whine.  He simply stopped fighting her and accepted his fate.  Delia pulled him out into the sun with her, and felt her own newfound power reach out and cover his cold, dead flesh... and as that happened, the sun made the vampire’s flesh tingle as his very flesh changed chemical composition.

Delia did not understand science or alchemy.  She could work a computer, and a smart phone.  She could even understand physics on a basic scale.  Action, reaction, power and force and drag.  But the how or why one thing could suddenly become something else all together.  That was a mystery to her.

He was shaking in her grasp when his eyes suddenly turned wide with surprise... and a sudden relief.

He wasn’t on fire.  He was standing out in the sun, with no cloud cover or shade of any kind... and he wasn’t on fire.

“Amazing... ” he murmured, looking at his bare forearm and hand.  The light made his pale, pale flesh nearly glow.

Delia let go of him, and even though her power ceased to run from her to him, he still remained unmolested by the light of day.  She smiled and gazed at him with wonder and delight.  He was the first.  The first to be blessed by her new power... by the power given to her by... by the nemesis.

She still didn’t have any real name to give the entity that had given her such a gift.  And she knew damn well that this all was just the tip of the iceberg.

Delia stepped away from the vampire, and the shadows from which she’d pulled him. “I need to find more like you.  More followers.”

She looked up to the sky above.  Blue and clear and earth shatteringly beautiful.

“They will make the perfect wedding gift.”
