“Bye.”
She walked off into the morning sun. He slowly crumpled the piece of paper, throwing it into a nearby trash can. He had no
intention of ever calling Stephanie Krause, as attracted as he was to her. He forgave her for hurting his feelings. But if
he was going to date a girl, he wanted it to be someone he could really trust.
“Hey,” Billy said, coming back with his pockets bulging and bags of snacks in both hands. “Who was that?”
“That? Oh, that was Stephanie.”
“Oh … uh-huh … and?”
“And what?”
Billy blinked. “Uh … nothing. Hey, there’s your mom and dad!”
All the long ride home, Tim basked in the memory of the past four weeks. It hadn’t all been fun, not by a long shot. But he’d
learned a lot, and he’d grown a lot. His game was better for sure. But above all, he knew now how important it was to have
true friends and to be true to himself.
“Hey, Billy,” he said, reaching over. “Let us have some of those chips.”
